Hey guys, I'm looking to build the deck, but budget is a little of an issue right now so I'm not too hot on buying 2-4 voice of resurgence. Any recommendation for another value 2 drop that does something upon entering the field or dying? I was planning of playing more wall of omen and some coiling oracle while being more oriented on the combo aspect of the deck than the beatdown plan. Also, maybe include a bit more of silver bullets mainboard.

I have gone 22-3 in the current MTGO Modern Competitive League with the following list. Traverse the Ulvenwald makes this deck so much more consistent (no more issues keeping one landers) while also adding a nice tutor effect to keep things going through tutoring for neonate. Traverse also gives you a nice tutor package out of the board to deal with annoying grafdiggers. I've tried the 4 color version, but the manabase is pretty dicey in this nacatl heavy meta. Deck does have issues vs. infect, hence the heavy 1CC kill spell sb.

    Plus Matchups:
    * Delver/Living End/Tron/Scapeshift/Merfolk/Affinity/Generic UWR/UWB/et al. Control
    Average Matchups:
    * Eldrazi/Tokens/Zoo (You NEED to go first).
    Needs Work:
    * Infect/Burn

    Axe: In vs Aggro/Infect/Eldrazi
    Gnaw: In vs Aggro/Tokens
    Darkblast: In vs Infect/Eldrazi
Abrupt: In vs Aggro/Anything packing graff/relic
Grudge: In vs Affinity/Anything packing graff/relic
    Crime: In vs Delver/Tron/Combo
Necroplasm: In vs Tokens/Aggro as a repeating ***
    Bog: In vs Delver/Mirror/Snapcaster Abuse
    GQ: In vs Infect/Tron
Ingot Chewer: In vs Affinty/Anything packing graff/relic

Gonna give a try to your version. Looks spicy and after storm, G eldrazy tron, burn and GBx, im looking for something spicy.

RIP twin, im recycing it your way, guys.

Yea. I meant Reforge the Soul I just couldn't remember the name. Playing it changes how you play a bit because you have to be a little less aggressive with your shocks and probes but that isn't a big issue. The reason I like it is against BGx. That version has a very good matchup vs BGx because we can beat discard pretty easily and maindeck empty is great.

I'm intrigued by the reforge the soul version. I do have 1-2 available, but how many would you run? And would you change the rest of the list a lot?

Good lord, please reprint baleful strix! Set the owl free!

Its not like theros was perfect for that reprint... OH WAIT IT WAS! I really want to pick up this deck, but god, I so want to play the bird!!!!

How was theros perfect for an artifact creature?

The flavor behind baleful strix was fitting. But no, you are right, an artifact multicolored creature isnt directly linked to theros.

Yea I'm probably the worst player some people may have played against when it comes to attitude....

I'm way better than I was before, but damn I get salty sometimes... mostly against burn (modern).
Anyway: I'm always working hard to keep it cool and not to lose my own cool. I know it sucks big time when Your opponent is salty, rude or just not nice when the game is not going is way.

I'm sorry and I repent for the times I was salty and had bad sportsmanship. Even tho its ''just a game'', the kid in me just won't hear it. And he's an a**hole.

The Daretti play math from the 2014 EDH precon.

I have a Daretti AND krenko edh deck and my first casual decks where in fact goblins. I do love the little green guys.
What's not to love about them anyway Wink

I really like the card in 8rack, bw token, jund, abzan, deadguy ale or any black grindy deck Smile It is a good card and a serious cancer once it hits the field.

Also: it isa good budget alternative to goyf for a beggining player in modern to play jund and junk. A really underplayed pearl IMO.

(no it does not replace goyf, I know guys, plz dont start this)

most people are exaggerating about his power, he's a great creature one of the best 4 drops but he's by no means Tarmogoyf, 2cmc up is a huge difference

Rhino is an excellent card vs creature based agro, burn and midrange mirrors. against anything else he's ok (definitely not a side out) but not that much: for instance against Twin you can't really cast him unless you are at 5-6 mana, against blue decks he asks to be remanded/countered, against affinity contrary to what people think he's nowhere hear as good as Lingering Souls: life gain doesn't matter a lot vs affinity it's like playing a watered down Fog effect but removal does, destroying Cranial Plating is how you handle affinity, not by gaining 3 life and then get hit for 9 by a plating equipped flier, and against most combo decks his great thoughness, trample and life gain don't matter either, you need a faster clock.

the reason why rhino is run as 4 of is that he fills a hole in Abzan decks (reach) and that his effect can be too powerfull if triggered multiple times (in an extreme scenario of casting 3 rhinos for instance that -9/+9 life swing is incredible), lastly although there are other 4 drop options there is nothing outright better, so if you included a couple why not include the rest as well?

Jund have the best 4 drops. huntmaster of the fells, olivia voldaren and bloodbraid elf (someday, once again). Junk have nothing else, not that it could complain about having nothing else. Rhino is really that good, especialy in the burn/delver/affinity meta.

But hey: who knows where we will be in a year from now? Maybe 8 rack will be THE deck to beat and mono white knight will be tier one along with elf combo! Rhino is the prom queen of this year, but he wont always be the auto 4 he is now in his color. Even collected company could play him for the raw value.

He is very good and you will rarely be sad when drawing him... I mean, its goyf and helix in one card with trample. Plus, he is good versus affinity and burn if u survive past turn 3.

I played Tasigur tonight as a 1 of, and I think that is plenty. There were so many times (as in almost every game) where drawing a Tasigur would have shrunk my Goyfs into oblivion.

I'm in the same situation and I must say, he really shines as a one of. And his activated ability is awesome when in combo with delve. Just get rid of whatever crap you dont want and keep the lands + let say path/lingering/abrupt/whatever. activate and boom! You often get what you want. And yes, drawing more than one could become a problem for the goyfs. Which is why I'm really enjoying him as a one of.

How often is a staple card hard to find?

It depends on the card, when it was last printed, what rarity it is, followed up with what people want to try and sell/buy them at.

The problem with MM1 was that it was no where near the amount needed so speculators where able to highjack a good portion of it and hinder the intended results, more people playing modern format.

So what you are telling me is that older cards, that weren't printed as much and are thus harder to acquire yet that everybody wants because they are staples cost more?

    BURN THE SPECULATORS

I don't understand why you are being so arrogant and quick to disregard the (very real) influence that speculation have on the game. Speculators are a plague on the game and yes, they do make hard to find staples even harder to find.I know a guy who owns 50 toughtseize. 50! Why? Because it's going to be even more valuable someday. He is not playing a single one of them. And guess what? He is waiting for 20 more in the mail.

Speculators are not encouraging the growth of the game in any way and are in fact indering it. Because of this, supplemental products are often misused and can't accomplish their primary goal AKA being opened and used in game instead of sitting in a dumb binder/in a storage.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just a modern player who loves the modern format and want to see it grow.

I think that you are really referring to just 'Collectors' in general here. As opposed to players.

And you are right. The 'collector' side of MTG is responsible for the *****ty reserved list. They are responsible for the death of Vintage(state side at least). They are responsible for what is the current slow demise of Legacy.

Magic has seen a huge boom in popularity over the last..decade or so. And it is not because of people like this. It is in spite of them. I'm willing to see Vintage stay dead, but Legacy is an amazing MTG format that most people are completely missing out on because it is so cost prohibitive. I really don't want Modern to end up the same way, so I'm glad that MM15 has so much larger of a print run.

I feel the same as you. I would have hope for an unlimited print for a year but hey, I'll stick with what we get...

And I own my goyfs, lili, bob and all. I'm an abzan player and god, the deck is stupid expensive. Can't wait for bigger reprint run of goyf so other players could enjoy them. By that, I dont mean free goyfs for everyone. But 100$ a pop would be nice for a change.

I love how people assume it's speculators that are causing the problems with Modern staples. Speculators cause price spikes of cards that generally do not see play (see a lot of the Narset extra combat cards a few months ago). Modern staples are worth money because... wait for it... they're staples.

and because...wait for it...when speculators see a valuable card in a limited set, they buy out all the supply and sit on it. the day Tarmogoyf was spoiled, a group of them cleaned out my area and there was no MM1 available for the actual players. When Wizards grew a pair on shocks and fetches and TS, it worked great for them and for anyone who actually wanted to play and not speculate
