  • posted a message on casting Necromancy with flash with empty stack.
To follow up, is it possible to announce that you are casting necromancy "as though it had flash" even at a time when a sorcery _could_ be cast? Say I want both Sundering Titan triggers. Would I need to contrive some mid-combat phase casting or is simply declaring the intent to cast "with flash" in a main phase sufficient?

Maybe an illustration of a simple exampe will help your understanding.

    Example:
Your opponent has the Deathmantle, the Composite Golem, and an Eager Cadet. All his lands are tapped, the Golem is the only source of mana avaialble to him right now. You have Pestilence and enough black mana to activate it multiple times.

    1) You activate Pestilence once, and put that on the stack. Then you pass.
    2) Your opponent responds by sacrificing the Golem, which gives him 5 mana, and puts a Deathmantle trigger for the Golem on the stack.

They could let pestilence resolve and respond to the cadet's Deathmantle Trigger. Then they can make mana and mantle can save them both Cadet and Golem.
Pestilence, in the meantime, would be able to kill remaining creatures in response to the Mana Combo.

In a situation with multiple creatures with varying toughness less than the golem's, pestilence would kill them in "waves." The golem player is able to pick one of these waves and save all the creatures in it, all the ones who died on the same state-check after the resolution of a particular pestilence activation.

    701.37. Exert

701.37a To exert a permanent, you choose to have it not untap during your next untap step.

701.37b A permanent can be exerted even if it’s not tapped or has already been exerted in a turn. If you exert a permanent more than once before your next untap step, each effect causing it not to untap expires during the same untap step.

701.37c An object that isn’t on the battlefield can’t be exerted.

701.37d “You may exert [this creature] as it attacks” is an optional cost to attack (see rule 508.1g). Some objects with this static ability have a triggered ability that triggers “when you do” printed in the same paragraph. These abilities are linked. (See rule 607.2g.)

An optional cost to attack, not an activated ability.

This works. P1 briefly having Hexproof and then losing it will not fizzle Lava Spike. Legality of targets is checked on cast and on resolution, not continuously.

Note that P2 would not be able to target P1 with the Discard or damage modes of K Command while orb is out.

It means that if you cast Emrakul, the Promised End twice in the same turn, you will only control your opponent's next turn, not the next two. The control effects are redundant. There is no way to have "double control" of the same next turn. The extra turns you give, though, do accumulate.

Once demonstrated, can you shortcut the same portions of the loop for each required iteration? That is, announce you will perform the loop say 10 times, shuffle + draw 10 times (discarding as needed), and get to the end state with the required unpredictable steps included but without repeatedly performing the predictable steps of activating the creature, activating ajani, casting the creature, each time.

    Compare to Mortician Beetle.

Here the sacrifice is not a cost. The Beetle's triggered ability looks for the event of sacrificing a creature and adds a counter to itself.

  • posted a message on Ishkanah questions
    Yes to both.

    1. Your opponent has two openings to activate ooze and take away delirium.
First is after Ishkanah is cast, while it is still a spell on the stack. When the spider resolves the trigger condition will not be true and there will be no trigger to create spiders.
Second is after Ishkanah enters play and triggers, but before the trigger resolves. Delirium must be true both for the trigger to go off and also when the trigger resolves.

    2. Ishkanah and the 3 spiders created by the trigger are each a creature and they each will trigger Path to Discovery.

So when Myr Retreaver is sacrificed it is(?) possible to use Ironworks to then also sack Trawler before the triggers from sacking Retrever are placed on the stack? Then all triggers go on the stack at once with both creatures in graveyard available as targets?

And this is possible because it's manna ability, where as Viscera Seer would not allow this?

  • posted a message on Quick question about copy spells
It's not clear if you are getting it.

    Cast howl.
    _top of stack_
    Howl
    _bottom of stack_

Holding priority cast Twincast targeting howl
    _top of stack_
    Twincast
    Howl
    _bottom of stack_

Let Twincast resolve. Only makes 1 copy of howl because no copies of howl have resolved.
    _top of stack_
    HowlCopy1
    Howl
    _bottom of stack_

Let HowlCopy1 resolve. HowlCopy1 effect active.
    _top of stack_
    Howl
    _bottom of stack_

Cast Reverb targeting Howl, triggering HowlCopy1.
    _top of stack_
    HowlCopy1 Trigger copying Reverb
    Reverb targeting Howl
    Howl
    _bottom of stack_

So when the HowlCopy1 trigger resolves you get a reverb copy(or 2 with raid) that can also target Howl. Let the Reverbs resolve and you will have 3(or 4) Howl effects total, with the original Howl still on the stack.

The key thing is that first copy spell that targets howl will not have a howl effect.

No. When you put the two upkeep triggers on the stack, the one that targets needs to have it's target chosen at that time. This is before the other trigger puts counters on everything.

  • posted a message on Beacon of tomorrows (shuffle from exile)
Unless they way you cast the spell specifies that you do something else with the spell it behaves normally.
Take the rule for Flashback, for example:

702.33a Flashback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities: one that functions while the card is in a player’s graveyard and another that functions while the card is on the stack. “Flashback [cost]” means “You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost” and “If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack.” Casting a spell using its flashback ability follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h.

So if you use Snapcaster Mage to give Beacon flashback and cast it from your graveyard it would not shuffle in.
Narset's ability has no such instruction. It will shuffle in as part of it's resolution.

I would understand that you are passing to the next damage step. Keep in mind that if there is no first strike damage to be assigned there is no first strike damage step.

My first rule question comes up: When the new goblin comes in, I gain 1 life due to soul warden. It triggers the enchantment to return to a creature, Do I gain a life for this change?

No. Nothing entered. It was already there and it changed.

Does this returned goblin have summoning sickness also?

No. It was on the battlefield under their control at the start of the turn. This counts even thought it was not a creature at the time.

Also, since I'm here, if soul sculptor dies while there are creatures made into enchantments with its ability, do they return to being creatures if he plays a new creature or do they stay enchantments because soul sculptor's ability is no longer in play to allow that?

They return to being creatures. The trigger to revert them comes from the ability that made them enchantments, not from Sculptor.
