The End of an Era
  • posted a message on What would it take for you to decide WOTC had jumped the shark?
I'd question the idea that YGO hasn't jumped the Shark. The broad definition of the term "jumping the shark" is roughly the moment when a brand, design, or creative effort's evolution loses the essential qualities that initially defined its success and declines, ultimately, into irrelevance. I'd definitely say YGO hit that point years ago.

For WotC to it, on the other hand, they'd probably need to do something that showed a complete disinterest in the continued viability of their brand(s). Not only killing formats and going back on their RL promise, but basically just saying "we no longer care about MTG, D&D, or any other game's longevity."

Short of that, the playerbase--including moi--will likely forgive a lot.

    Removing Legacy or Vintage?

If by this you mean "stop supporting," they don't exactly support either format heavily as it is. If you mean treat it as unofficial/defunct, WotC would likely never do this. Extended is currently unsupported (competitively), but it's still considered a legal format.

    * No Interrupts. Seriously, am I the only one missing them - they added a whole new layer to the game to exploit.
    * No damage on the stack... Why...

I'll be honest: I can't really feel you on this. I've tried from multiple angles, but I can't. The two changes your talking about were put of a progressive attempt by WotC tob remove needless complexities and superfluous typing from the game.

More specifically, on interrupts: No, you're not the only one. Every Goyf player--a group I assume you're in or at least wanting to be in--would love to have this extra type. That said, it's the MTG equivalent of YGO's Spell Speed 3 cards (i.e. Counter Traps). And I'm not sure we need a three-tiered system of effect spells in our game.

I will say that there's no need to be short with fellow posters (in general), and defending such an attitude is probably a mistake. If a question annoys you, you can simply ignore it. Answering in a dismissive way doesn't "teach" the asker, it just antagonizes them.

Considering WotC attempts to cripple multicolored decks, I doubt so.

They're not trying to cripple these decks, they're just done supporting them (in Core). Greedy mana bases shouldn't be (and generally aren't) the norm in Standard. That said, Core isn't really the best place to look for mana fixing anyway (historically).

Worth noting: The only existing card that produces 1/1 red Elemental tokens is Elemental Mastery. But the fact that there's two such tokens indicates that there's something more going on (and Elemental Mastery might not be present at all).

There's also two artworks for the Sliver tokens; all it means is Wizards used two artworks. It has no greater significance.

Hello. I'm here to talk to you about
someone very important to me- myself.

As my user name implies, I'm Edward Mass. That's a famous name, by the way. (I always tell people to look it up; no one does.)

I come from a distant plane called Earth. I'm Red-Black aligned, and I have a lapsed membership in the Rakdos Cult.

I've been planeswalking for a little over two years now, though my peers often mistake me for an old timer.

That said, I would consider myself fairly well-versed at this point. If you need any advice as a player, I'd happy to help.

So, on to my career. Since I'm a creative writer at heart, I describe it from an in-universe perspective...

The first plane I visited was Zendikar, sometime after the Eldrazi rose. I left quickly. Then, I came to Mirrodin right in the middle of the war. New Phyrexia was in full force soon after I arrived. I enjoyed my time here, believe it or not. I then traveled aimlessly for a while, and refused to battle my fellow 'walkers.

Most recently, I've visited Innistrad just as Avacyn was restored, and joined my peers in a return to the much loved plane of Ravnica. I must admit that the plane has lost some of its luster this second time out.

I am, however, excited to visit future planes and battle my peers once more. I also wish to see my muse, Chandra Nalaar, finally earn the respect and recognition she so richly deserves. This is her year, and nothing can stop her (except, as always herself).

Back on my native plane (where 'walkers hide amongst a largely oblivious populace), I am a part-time student, tutor, and amateur teacher. (I also write, religiously.) Despite my many travels, powers and accomplishments, I am routinely short of money and live as a factotum. My life is not unlike that of Peter Parker, an acquaintense of main from the plane called 616 (the planeswalkers native to his corner of the multiverse number their planes).

It's a pleasure meeting you all. Once again, seek my counsel if ever you need it.

I can guarantee you that the MTG metagame is 100 times better than the YGO one.

Well, admittedly, I'm biased against an aggro-dominant meta. I wouldn't really say the current Standard meta is broken, just skill-reduced. Standard of Zendikar era--the last time WotC banned a card in the format--was the last provably broken period. (I know some who claim last year's meta was broken, but I feel this is pushing it slightly.)

I am perfectly satisfied playing a tier 2/3 deck (like I have been in YGO for years) that has a low budget. I like to call these types of decks "rogue".

"Rogue tier" and "brew tier," are both good colloquialisms for the types of decks you're talking about.

I'm talking like $30-$40 or so. I'm thinking of waiting until M14 core set gets released.

In this case, I'd recommend a modified event deck or intro pack shell. Of the ones that are currently available, the Simic (UG) would be your best bet. Otherwise, definitely wait for M14. There will probably be better options then.

So do we have confirmation spoilers start July 1st then?

We're mostly speculating based on past experiences. I think Jace the Broken has it right, though.

prerelease is the 14th-15th of July, and they reveal the full set a week before, on July 8th ... two weeks before that ... previews start ... June 24th.

So for a starting player, I would like to know which format I should start with. I'm looking for an inexpensive competitive deck. And competitive on the level that it would be good in FNM, not in major tournaments. What packs/starter decks/core sets/etc should I buy? I know that the Magic 2014 Core set is coming out in July. It seems like the most logical approach to starting.

Realistically, few to zero archetypical or "netdecked" builds are going to be cheap. They are effective, though. As to the line between FNM/local-level competitiveness and "major tournament," you need to recognize that many FNM players netdeck. And netdecking, by its nature, usually means using the strongest (and most expensive) decks/cards in a given format.

So, in short, the better you want your deck to be, the more it'll cost. My advice in this regard, though, is simply investing in (dual) lands, especially the "Shockland" cycle from the Ravnica blocks. These are universally good cards that see play in multiple formats and will act as a foundation for your deck (regardless of its archetype). Beyond that, M14 core looks like a good set based on the current spoilers. (And control decks, at least in Standard, rely more heavily on core sets for things like counter spells, boardwipes, etc.)

I also would like some general idea on which color to use, because all I ever hear is that you can make anything you want.

No good teacher/mentor should push you toward any color (or color combo), even with your stated preference for control. I would also say that if you're a Spike player, as you seem to be, color preference isn't going to fact into every deck you build. For example, my color preference is Rakdos (RB), but I loved Azorius (WU) control in Standard.

In Yugioh, I enjoyed using control decks. Lots of traps, low monster count, locking the opponent, and playing big grind games. I wouldn't know what this correlates to in Magic.

This sounds exactly like Magic-style control. What's funny is that it also
doesn't sound anything like how YGO is currently played. Last I checked, their meta revolved heavily around 1st and second turn combos. I can't imagine how you play "grind games" in YGO. Magic's closest equivalent is Legacy. And whilst people do play control in that format, the games overall are still very fast.

As to control in, say, Standard, I'm going to be straight with you: The state of the metagame sucks. Control is all but dead in current Standard. I've seen numerous attempts at control decks fail to win consistently, whereas aggro, midrange and even combo (i.e. junk rites) are holding strong.

So, I wouldn't personally attempt control until after M14 (or rotation). The card pool for it is too limited, the aggro decks are too fast/resilient, and you really have only one favorable matchup (combo), if that. Lastly, control is easily one of the most skill intensive archetypes. In short, it's not newbie friendly.

An event deck would be your best way in. It's pretty powerful and you can adjust from the shell.

And are event decks frowned upon?

Not at all. Though, like Theichibun noted, you can't expect to win with them straight out of the box. Also, most of the Standard event decks (currently and historically) lean more toward budget aggro strategies. So just be aware that they probably won't be that satisfying to play, given your preferences.

How much money would I be looking to spend on a standard deck? I'm not really interested in getting all the chase cards for 10-20 apiece. Even if you don't buy the chase cards and stuff, can't you still be competitive?

I generally advise against getting cards that are provably overvalued. Sphinx Rev is a easy example, being that it's mana-intensive, easily countered, and WotC almost immediately printed hate for it. The Shocklands are an example of a moderately expensive cycle that you should invest in, especially since most/all are currently undervalued (and guaranteed to appreciate).

Ultimately, there's always a cost-benefit analysis involved. I, for example, know I can build a competitive level MBC deck for post-M14, pre-rotation Standard. My partial conflict is that I'll need to invest roughly 60 to 100 dollars in lands and spells. Ironically, it's only for a playset of Mutavault (an expensive land) and a particular creature that sees play in multiple formats. The rest of the deck, as a whole, is easily assembled on a budget. Unfortunately, it won't be nearly as effective without those two cards.

So, again, you need to make a personal judgment call. Would you rather have a cheap deck that's "good enough," an expensive one that's provably tier 1, or something in between?

official spoilers typically start 3 weeks out from the set prerelease, with 2 weeks of daily spoilers and the full image gallery being posted on the mothership monday the week of the prerelease

This has been my experience for the last 4 or 5 expansions. Also, mothership does seem to post spoilers with the leaks in mind, so we may well see a good mix between "new" and "old" cards.

The big question is whether they reveal Chandra by herself or as part of the mass reveal.

Hello, all. My user name is what I go by IRL, though you can call me "Ed". I've been lurking for a few months, then decided to delve in. After some slight technical difficulties related to my choice of email address, I finally made my way in. I'm looking forward to some great times here, and learning/sharing a lot of good information.

Also, I'm probably going to make a more detailed personal intro thread for myself. It's self-indulgent, but that's what this board is for. Apologies in advance if any of you get sick of me.

That's easy to do, simply avoid M:TG related sites for the month or so prior to the pre-release.

Presumably he'd favor being on equal footing, knowledge-wise. I know I'd hate denying myself prep-relevant information simply for the surprise factor.

Plus, having everyone share in the surprise is always better than being the last to know, from a basic sociology standpoint.
