I had a Daxos of Meletis deck that was incredibly underpowered and had all kinds of creatures with combat damage triggers. I also ran Heliod's Emissary, Niblis of the Urn and Master of Diversion, because you gotta get those guys through somehow. It was a sweet deck, not very competitive, but the ability to tap stuff whenever you attack is actually pretty good. It at least forces people to leave multiple things back if they want to block. Niblis of the Urn is probably the best of the creatures with the ability, 2 mana is great.

I've got a buddy that plays this in his black deck. It's pretty annoying honestly, but it usually draws enough aggro that it doesn't make it past a couple upkeeps. One of the few Cumulative Upkeep cards that's actually playable.

It's a pretty sweet card, I've played it before in mono blue. Basically if they strip mine this, Nykthos will kill them so it's no biggy.

Ah yes, the blue Harmonize. It's quite vanilla but it's a fine card, I'd hardly even ridicule anyone who cast it. Blue has tons of better options, but sometimes you have 6 blue decks and you only own 3 Fact or Fictions, 2 Thirst for Knowlege, 4 Mulldrifters and a Dig Through Time and you still want to draw cards.

I was pretty happy to see Disdainful Stroke printed and slotted it into all my blue decks in replacement of Negate or Arcane Denial. Every time I've drawn it I've wished it was the old cards, because it's always been some annoying 3 mana instant that I most wanted to counter. So basically, I feel Negate is probably just better. I put my Negates back in but I'm going to give Disdainful Stroke a little more time before I dismiss it entirely, because it seems like the kind of card that would be good in this format.

I was beating myself up the other day for missing a kill that should have been pretty obvious. It was down to 1v1, my buddy has an Elesh Norn and a bunch of tapped creatures. I was close to dead, so I had to figure something out, luckily I had quite a few creatures, 13 mana and a Kessig Wolf Run. My hand consists of Skullclamp, two lands and I draw Beast Within for my turn. Now I tank for awhile. If I Beast Within the Elesh Norn and swing with everything then dump the rest of my mana into Wolf Run I end up being about 3 damage short since he can chump with the Beast and then die on the crackback. I see if pumping any other way gets me more damage through but it doesn't. So I play the Skullclamp and start clamping away some creatures to see if I draw a sweeper or something to get me out of it. I don't so I elect not to swing and pass. On his turn he pulls some shenanigans to tap all my creatures and I die. It's not until I'm leaving the shop that night that I realize I could Beast Within the Elesh Norn after blockers and before damage then Wolf Run the guy he blocked to trample through for the win. It was pretty frustrating because I took several minutes to think on my turn and didn't even think of it. Luckily I remembered my trample tricks for the Prerelease and ended up winning some games that way.

Curse of the Swine is amazing, at least in my meta recursion is super prevailant so getting rid of the Kaalia's Dragons and Mimeoplasm's reanimation targets for good is very important. And for whatever reason people just have a great time with the pig tokens, because they're pigs and it's awesome. It's become a staple for me because goofy multiplayer effect + excellent removal is a home run. Wrath of God is my least favorite sweeper in the format, most games aren't so fast that you have to sweep turn four, so more value-y wraths like Rout, Black Sun Zenith, Merciless Eviction, Austere Command and the new End Hostilities are just better. Ashes to Ashes is also amazing, but I feel like if it's a contest between it and Curse, Curse wins. For the same cost they exile the same number of creatures, but Curse scales with the more mana you have and it pitches to Force of Will.

Merieke Ri Berit is a great one if you aren't married to having red in the deck. Magewright's Stone and Thousand-Year Elixir are musts for this style of deck.

Cool people remind their opponents of their Pact triggers, even in tournaments. You aren't obligated to, but a cool guy would.

No, no, no, no, no. The point, the very POINT of the card is that you get the amazing ability for 0 mana. And if you don't pay for it during your upkeep, you lose. A cool guy also buys everyone at his games lunch, and buys drinks, and pays everyone elses car insurance. You are exactly the kind of guy I need at my local game store.

I mean, if car insurance was free I'd totally buy it for everybody. There's very little cost to turning back to the upkeep, usually all that happens is a draw step, so just tap all the necessary mana sources and move on. If the thought of someone forgetting a some minutia like that really gets you maybe EDH isn't your format. Try TurboTax, all the bean counters love it.

Thrun's good, the only thing that really stops him is the no-regeneration sweepers. The totem armor auras can help him survive those, Snake Umbra, Spider Umbra, Bear Umbra and Boar Umbra. Creeping Renaissance and Praetors Council can help you recover from a board wipe, and Fresh Meat and Caller of the Claw both replace the dudes you lost with tokens. Then there's Eldrazi Monument for straight up indestructibility, but you'd need a token theme to keep it around.

  • posted a message on The Tricky Matter of Graveyard Order
Lol wow, the passion people have for graveyard order is amazing. Sometimes it's hard to keep your graveyard in order, especially if you have a deck that interacts with your graveyard heavily. If you're playing Corpse Dance or Phyrexian Furnace then let your opponents know that graveyard order matters before the game starts. And if they're jerks about it and shuffle their graveyard around anyway then just reanimate/exile whatever you want :p You can't really blame people for not knowing about an archaic rule that hasn't been relevant in over a decade.

If you're looking for a green dude to kill gods there's Brutalizer Exarch, assuming they aren't creatures. I've been playing this guy a lot recently and have been relatively happy with him. 6 mana is a lot, but sometimes you just really gotta get rid of a Purphuros.

Slime is better, but redundancy is really important in EDH and more removal is not a bad thing. Sage is great, I see it being a green staple for a long, long time.

It's a sweet card advantage engine for token decks and it's a nice anti-Wrath card for monogreen. It's not the most competitive option in either category, but it's still a good card.
