Well considering how unimpressive what we've seen so far with them is, theyve got a lot of work to do to avoid a disappointing year

I guess I feel much differently than you do. Many of these, in my opinion, easily replace a basic land in most EDH decks and that deck instantly gets a little bit better. Having a relevant spell in the late game, or a land in the early game, is huge, considering the nearly-zero opportunity cost of running it in a land slot. This is especially true for the mythic versions which can ETB untapped for 3 life. But any of the relevant modal spells could easily become commander staples IMO.

I will say I always run Price of Progress, Anathemancer and other nonbasic land hate. I run Wave of Vitriol in all my green decks even my 5 colour decks. So I welcome all the people who want to cut out basic lands from their edh deck for non-basics. I welcome it with a great big smile! Grin

EDIT: I have even been know to destroy up to 10 lands with just a single ghost quarter in one game of edh.
I have different color preference since I use blood moon and back to basics but generally I use similar approach. That's why I always recommend people who start with precons to replace crappy taplands with basics, especially when they have options to ramp/colorfix with spells (the fact that ramp spells are much cheaper than duals is also a factor).
The good thing is that they might end up not that expensive so wotc could put them in precons and make their manabase usable without sacrificing monetary value of spells from them.

I find it so strange people are so willing to get rid of basics in their EDH decks where there are plenty of cards that will straight stop you from playing when you have too few basics.

indeed I wouldn’t remove basics for these they said like several times you choose the side your using before the game begins

You choose side when you play the card. See here: https://youtu.be/arjKqgx-E1w?t=48 Choosing before the game begins would defeat the whole purpose of mdfc lands.

    Oh boy...
Wait...EACH opponent? Dang...Hello EDH Mill to the nth degree!

    'buster
I'm not sure if I would not prefer to mill selectively as graveyard is heavily used as a resource by some decks and unless you have some infinite loop going (eg tatyova + ghostly flicker + mystic sanctuary + cost reducer) it would be better to not help gy reliant decks. "... any number of players ..." would be too good I guess. It's great to be able to select between two options. Or... crab tribal mill?

Here's Nahiri's full art, courtesy of artist David Rapoza. Here he zooms in on the details in the art.
wow, he actually filled the whole image with details unlike usual pw artwork where lower half is only blurry sketch because it's hidden behind text on the card. very appreciated.

MaRo on his Tumblr account recently said Secret Lair are selling very well. That’s why we have dog themed artwork now. I personally like this product line because Secret Lair would really be the only avenue I have of getting alternative art work on certain sought after cards that otherwise would piss off most gamers in any other kind of release.

You can simply let an artist make you alters.

Costs you pretty much the same to commission them yourself and you get a UNIQUE piece of art, instead of this mass produced junk.

Then you run the risk of having non-legal cards at an event, supposing that's your jam. It's also entirely possible that people, I dunno, actually enjoy these products and find the investment worthwhile.

since those will be foil you still run the same risk since no judge will allow sleeved pringles in your deck. Wink
i have never seen alters being a problem on a tournament if they were done by someone who knows what is doing and was a few times in trouble due to foils refusing to remain flat. it can be of some concern in case you expect to use them in bigger tournament but seeing the theme and card selection i think this is targeted at edh crowd where this is not a concern.

So why is this 30$, but €34.99 on the other side of the Atlantic? Frown
either trees are more expensive in eu or desire to support (nonexistent) na secondary market in time of crisis. /s
i never understood why cards that can be printed in eu at the same cost are more expensive than those in na.

doesn't the fact that a problem is being reported repeatedly by multiple people and is not being adressed by wotc make it stand out even more?

back on topic - i hate this kindof announcements of announcements. i eagerly wait for the moment that we will get anouncements of announcement announcements. /s
it would be great if instead of pr messages of no value we got actual information followed by information of current status of product shipment delays. i think everyone understands that under current circumstances delays are inevitable and woiuld apreciate wotc being more open about that.

The most baffling thing about this is why ANYONE still plays Standard or Pioneer. People whine about Modern bans, and they do suck, and Wizards SHOULD be yelled at for some of them, but unless I am missing something, they have banned moe cards from STANDARD in the last 12 months than in any 12 month period in Modern with the exception of only the initial announcement of the format. The same goes for Pioneer, also excluding the initial announcement. Buying into the two most hyped and supported formats in the last year is just lighting money on fire in a way Modern has NEVER been.

i enjoy playing standard more than modern. i like the constant shift, the automatical force to rethink or change a deck. its a very dynamic format. and to be honest i really liked the old standard showdown booster, which were a really nice addon to these tournaments. sadly wizards even had to ruin those...

and standard usually is a more interactive format than modern or pioneer, where so many decks simply ignore the opponent and just focus on their combo / win con

i know people dont like change, i know standard in long term can be more expensive than modern (but hell, magic as a whole is), but it is my hobby and i am willing to pay for the fun. to me standard used to be a really good format (not just because it sells products for wizards)
the problem is that this dynamic of constant change in standard is pricing out a lot of people out of the format. the problem is not in the dynamic itself but rather in prices of individual cards. buying into any reasonably competitive deck is not an option for a lot of people and the inability to liquidate cards at rotation (cards from standard do not translate well into other formats with few exceptions and in case of banning like those you are left with unsellable cardboard as well) does not help either.
so in the end casual players are driven out of standard and leftover competitive metagame collapses to a handful of decks as we see now.

    Why is Growth Spiral banned?

Almost 70% of decks in the arena tournament on Saturday (day 1) was using spiral. When a 2-color card appears in 70% of all decks... that isn’t a good sign.
how many of those decks used uro? for that matter how many decks in that tournament used all these cards?
i'm not saying those bans were uwarranted but rather that spiral would be fine with the other ones banned and if uro was banned as well. but as it was pointed out commons do not sell packs. :/

i wonder how this bans will affect pioneer in long term. i would not feel confident in investing neither my time nor money into format where from time to time wotc decides to remove top decks because they are... well, top decks. if the underlying issue (which is that format warping cards are being printed in standard sets) will not be fixed then the same problem will arise sooner or later.

  • posted a message on Set boosters (yet another new type of booster)
I really wish Wizards made a booster that has known useful constructed cards only. But, Wizards wouldn't be able to keep the price down, because they know how much such cards are worth on the secondary market and would seek to maximize profit on the booster.

I don’t... what does this even mean?

Looking at MTGTop8, I count about 140 commons/uncommons that appear in at least %1 of Modern decks.

Unless you are literally asking wizards to sell you a pack with 8-12 $5+ Rares in it and nothing else, the non-rares in each “set-without-chaff” would be the same because there simply aren’t enough of them.

...not that this is necessarily a bad thing, mind you. Having a non-draft set as a cross between a core set/masters set that has all of the non-rare staples and a rotating selection of chase cards would be pretty cool... though yeah, the price would be a bit absurd.
140 playable non-rares in format with over 13k available cards seems abysmally insignificant. but that's modern where the competition for playability is steep so standard would be better example... except in standard the situation is similar, only a handful of non-rares are playable in consructed. it's obvious that most of the cards are designed to be chaff "because limited" which is really tiresome for people who wants to play constructed because it rises the cost of the game and prices out a lot of people.
spreading constructed-useful cards through all rarities instead concentrating them in rares and mythics is what would really help the set to not give out the feeling that only rare/mythic slot in the pack can be worth something.

why is avenger >10$ anyway? it's not even that heavily used in commander decks.
titania does not even need avenger (still it's a welcome reprint due to current price). 5/3s are better than 0/1s plants that you need to cultivate to make them bigger.

Well that pretty much kills everything in pauper, can't actually think of any common legendaries that get played. It's funny they reprint Oubliette and obsolete it at the same time haha
oubliette still leaves bb devotion which is relevant. not sure how much enchantment removal people are using main and sb right now. it's not worth to bring enchantment hate if people are not using pestilences in large numbers in mbc so oubliette seems to be still fine as 0-2 off complement to faster removal.
looks like i need to track down a few of those japaneese promos now.
