  • posted a message on Does exiling the top card count as a draw?
No. The effect must explicitly say that you are drawing the cards to count.

Edit: Unless the word draw (or conjugations of draw) is actually in text then it is not drawing. For example, taking cards from your library and putting them into your hand (Abundance or Demonic Tutor) does not count as drawing them.

You could also just add the "in a random order" clause onto the card instead of "in any order".

  • posted a message on What would reprinting memory jar do to standard?
Memory Jar doesn't exile: it discards. The discard aspect is what makes it extra insane because you still have some access to the cards and you trigger discard effects (Hence the Jar/Megrim combo that was legal for about a week). Memory Jar is ridiculous amounts of card draw for a colorless card.

    Edit:Typo

A mixture of Kalonian Hydra and Corpsejack Menace is by far the largest mentioned so far. I calculated that using 50 Hydras and 50 Menaces gives 7.51*10^754 using the damage formula f = 4*x(2^(100*x-x^2)-1) + 400 where x is the number of hydras. By maximizing 100*x-x^2, you will find that that 50/50 should be the overall maximum of the Hydra to Menace ratio as the exponential behavior will dominate.

Edit:Credit should be given to HairyHorux as their idea of using Kalonian and Doubling Season inspired me to do it with Kalonian and Corpsejack.

The problem with this plan is if Worldgorger leaves the battlefield before its enter the battle field trigger resolves then all of your stuff will be perma-exiled as the leaves play trigger will resolve prior to the ETB trigger.

Let's see... (if we can set some straight):

    1. Cost 7 mana.

    2. Can be chumped blocked.

    3. Loose hexproof if you use it and then dies to hero's downfall and friends.

    4. No actual evasion.

    5. No ETB effect.

    So:

    A. Aetherling: better because for the same CMC it has real unblockability and is really unkillable with targeted removal. (Okaaaaay, *almost* unkillable.)

    B. Zegana and friends: better because they're big and have immediate impact thanks to ETB.

If you want to play the Kraken, you're better off just adding gods willing to your deck.

(I also find it amusing the amount of scepticism on the block-with-everything. They write the rule text. They add reminder text that explictly state how it works. Still people don't believe it. I'll stay away from spoiler threads of any creature with actual unblockable ability. Must be a blood-bath!?)

    It's a limited bomb though.

I don't care about which one is better but your points 2 and 4 against the Kraken are wrong. The only way they can chump block the Kraken is if they sacrifice their entire field to 'chump' it, which could only count as chumping if they have a single small creature on field later than turn 8 (aka you are crushing them). If they have attacked with literally anything, they can't block it which seems pretty evasive to me. I would much rather have the Kraken's 'not evasion' than flying as you are more likely to get through(and or destroy the majority of their field win-win) than you are with flying.

Remember kids, if everyone isn't ready to block then the Terrorist Krakens win.

None of the blocks after Alara Reborn had super gimmicky third sets to tie the block together so why would this one be any different? Zendikar block and Scars of Mirrodin both could easily have had super gimmicky tie-ins if that was something Wizards thought was good idea.

It all started with me having about seventy cards in hand as all good games with my Zegana deck end up. I also had a Forbid in my hand to prevent interference.

On field was a Master Biomancer with an Empyrial Plate attached so it is ~72/74. I also have a good old Doubling Season off to the side. I hard cast Omnisciencewith a decent amount of mana open, and kick a Rite of Replication targeting the biomancer giving a total power of 1632 of biomancers on the bound. I cast Rude Awakening to have more mana for Rite. I then cast Eternal Witness getting back the Rite, kick it again targeting the Biomancer giving me a total Biomancer power of 17972. For the purpose of overkill, I cast Praetor's Counsel and kick Rite again giving me power of Biomancer 197,712 spread over 31 Biomancers. I cast Sakashima, the Imposter copying the Eternal Witness giving me another chance to Rite to a total of 2,174,852 power of Biomancers. I cast Masumaro, First to Live and Overwhelming Stampede giving me 93,518,636 power of Biomancers. I finish it off by casting a random creature, Akroma's Memorial, and then Fungal Sprouting swinging for over 8.649*10^15 damage non-infinitely.

Trying to teach your 7 year old how to play Magic with Legacy decks is like trying to teach her how to ride a bike by starting her with juggling flaming chainsaws on a unicycle. Presumably, unless she is particularly capable for her age, the math and reading involved with playing the game will be at least somewhat challenging in and of itself without the stack, counter spells or anything that makes Legacy truly complex and interesting like combo decks, entering into everything. As was said above, you want to ease her into the game with simple straightforward decks full mostly of simple (and probably pretty/cool) vanilla, french vanilla or single ability creatures with straightforward non-creatures. You should in turn play against her with only decks of even or lower power level and complexity.

See, that's what was confusing to me, because I was under the impression that "play" had been errated to "cast" for all non-land cards.

So I suppose that as a follow up, Leyline of Anticipation would not allow me to play Dryad Arbor at instant speed because it specifically says cast?

And thanks for the assistance. It's still hard to grok that Dryad Arbor isn't a spell and doesn't get cast yet Tefari gives it flash, but I doubt I'll ever need to know that.

Leyline of Anticipation fails independently of the word 'cast' because it says 'non-land' cards on it. So even if Dryad Arbor was mystically a Land Spell you still couldn't cast it.

Primordial Hydra never saw play, neither will this.

Primordial Hydra never seeing play and Kalonian Hydra's chance of seeing play are completely unrelated. The clause that says Primordia Hydra has trample when it has ten or more counters is a large factor since under standard circumstance and you making every land drop until you play it, Primordial Hydra has no evasion until a minimum of turn seven.

The best case scenario in terms of it getting big is if you play it on turn three (1/1 for 3) or four (2/2 for 4). In those cases it's power and toughness go 1(turn 3),2(turn 4),4,8,16 (turn 7). Both of which are not optimal plays because you don't want to play a combat vanilla behind the curve do nothing to let it sit there for several turns hoping that your opponents ignore it entirely. If you play it on turn 5 as 3/3 it goes 3,6,12(turn 8). It isn't till you can play it as a 5/5 on turn seven that it will actually be able to swing with evasion on the next turn. Those scenarios also require you to tap out to get full advantage of it(along with the mythical never missing a land drop) and hope your opponent doesn't just burn it to death since it will be in burn range the first turn it is played until turn 6. It isn't until turn 8 without missing a land drop when you can cast it as a 5/5 leaving one mana open that it would not be worthless to cast for less than X = your number of lands.

On the other hand, Kalonian Hydra always has trample, is never in easy burn range, can be cast for it's full advantage without having to tap out completely at six plus lands and is actually above curve the first turn it can swing on top of the some times relevant buffing ability. It might not be Thragtusk stapled to Thundermaw Hellkite, but it certainly isn't Primordial Hydra either.
