You actually don't get anything early. Others are opening product a week or more before you. And NO you can't buy boosters, regular or theme, boxes, or bundles at that time either so you are dead wrong on that part. (Unless you have connections or your LGS breaks the Release Day agreement.)

Just want to comment on this. You do get early access to cards, see interactions play out, and get a feel for how strong the cards are in use, outside of the vacuum of speculation. Wizards has also recently made a change whereyou can purchase your box at a pre-release (I believe this started with Dominaria, but am not 100% sure). As an avid limited player I enjoy attending pre-release events. I do, however, see your point and would be more than okay with pre-releases becoming a thing of the past and just becoming releases. That said, the likely reason pre-releases are still around is because Wizards find them profitable.

@WarMachinePrime, this. You can buy product if you attend a prerelease. It's been going on for a while now(even further back than Dominaria but don't quote me on that).
The current model is profitable for both WOTC and LGSs. I'm close friends with the owner of my LGS, and he says his biggest sales are at prerelease and street date. After that it's just a steady trickle. So for him the model works.
I'm a singles buyer, so I have to wait until street date to get what I what. Right now I have a pile of singles sitting at my LGS waiting for release date for me to purchase them.
Look, I'm not trying to argue or debate the topic. I just disagree with your sentiment about it. Since opinions don't matter really, there we have it. Two people with differing opinions about nothing that truly matters.

While Banding isn’t a “blocking” ability, it still has an affect when blocking: 702.21j During the combat damage step, if an attacking creature is being blocked by a creature with banding, or by both a [quality] creature with "bands with other [quality]" and another [quality] creature, the defending player (rather than the active player) chooses how the attacking creature's damage is assigned. That player can divide that creature's combat damage as they choose among any number of creatures blocking it. This is an exception to the procedure described in rule 510.1c.

Maybe just go to the pre-release and get product then. Or try NOT watching videos on youtube, no one is forcing you.
It’s a model WOTC has been using for a long time. I like it, I get stuff early if I attend, if not no big. It’s just one week, are you people like five years old and cannot handle a little wait time?
Plus I feel that it’s good for LGSs, it gives them two weekends of high sales vs. only one.

Never been a Standard player. But my favorite block is Urza’s Saga. As a casual player the power level was/is so much fun.

  • posted a message on Urza's Ruinous Blast question
No. As long as it’s your turn and you have priority. Your opponent cannot reapond until your spell is on the stack. At that point it’s too late.
It states this in the rulings on Urza’s Ruinous Blast.

The hybrid border is an aesthetic choice that helps highlighting a mechanic of the card. Pretty much the same way as Vehicles have a specific border instead of the regular artifact or current legendary (non-planeswalkers) permanents have a crown flourish on the top.
While I agree that the hybrid border is nicer to look at than the golden border in most cases, it informs you that the card you have in hand works slightly differently than a regular multicolor card at a glance.

Having the two frames separated has an actual function outside of the game rules and using the hybrid frame for everything would remove that function.

This comment nails it on the head. That and everything SavannahLion said. Functionality has to take precedence over form(IMHO).

I cannot stand those made up gender “neutral” words. They come off as silly and forced. I’m an old man there’s no way I’m goning to remember any of that.
That said, it’s not difficult to be civil and use “they” as a neutral pronoun if it’s what people prefer.

And to the people that say “respect needs to be earned”, so how do you treat people before they’ve earned your respect? Are just a jerk to people until they’ve met your criteria? How about treating people with respect until they show they don’t deserve respect.
Whatever happened to treating people how you would wish to be treated?
I treat people how I want to be treated, and then I treat them as they treat me. I give respect, disrespect has to be earned.

Fair question: I think civility is different than respect. Civility means I'm not going to go out of my way to make anyone's life difficult, but if my best interests and yours were to enter conflict, I would not give any ground. How I act towards others, how any person can act towards others in fact, is a pretty broad spectrum. Reducing it to a binary of "well you are either respectful or a jerk" ignores a lot of nuance. If you automatically respect people, you are gonna get taken for a ride repeatedly. Here's an example:

I'm walking into a restaurant. As I open the door, I see out of my peripheral vision that someone is a couple feet behind me. I keep my hand on the door until they place their hand out to take the weight. However, and I barhop frequently enough to see this constantly, if this plays out and the person behind me doesn't take the door, but rather turns away and starts talking to someone "Hey, we should go in here!" I'm just moving on. It isn't my responsibility to keep that door propped open for them. Another case:

If I called Autumn "she" or "her" based purely on visual data, and their response was to ask that I use third person pronouns, s'all good. A simple request gets a simple answer. However, if a twitter mob forms calling for my banning from MtG or being fired from my job? Well that mob doesn't deserve any respect. Part of my irritation with these discussions is that a certain group of people that we can't even call out on this forum per the rules thinks they are superheroes fighting evil. It's why I am just a guy who plays Magic, not a member of some community.

Being nice is a cute pipe dream. People are generally not that nice, and the sooner you learn that and start with doubt, the better off you will be.

I definitely don’t need a lecture on how people are, as someone who owns a business involving customer service I’ve had to learn to edit my behavior both for the sake of my customers and employees. I don’t trust anyone and surely don’t take any crap either.
All your examples are perfectly fine and I agree. I guess I was using “respectful” and “civil” more synonymously. My statement is aimed primarily at the “I don’t want to change my behavior because reasons” crowd.
I agree people can really suck much of the time, but I’ve also learned that treating people well can illicit better behavior from them. I’m generally considered an ******** by people around me, but that doesn’t mean I have to be less mature.
You’re absolutely correct, no need to put yourself in a position to be taken advantage of. I guess finding that balance between being polite and cautious is the key.

    (SNIP)

To be fair my LGS receives more pre-release kits and promos than he has players attending events. He’ll sell the pre-release kits in bulk for a good price. He sells leftover promos online. Many of the locals will trade in the promos for store credit, and the owner trades quite well to get them. So he ends up with a lot of extra product to sell. It could look shady from a cursory glance but he’s totally on the up and up. I have a feeling that this is quite common in smaller locales.

Really? I thought the stores were given product based on tiers. So much product for so many players. But I guess that would make sense if tier X consists of wide range on the player count. If you're at the lower end of the spectrum, you're going to get the amount of product suitable for a store with a player count in the upper end of spectrum due to both stores being on the same tier.

I wonder if the new WPN scale is intended to alleviate that?

On highly anticipated releases he gets 25-30 attendees, at a typical FNM he gets about 8. There’s a lot of variance, and from what he told me is that WOTC tries to send him product to match his higher numbers. In the past they would only send him product to match his lower numbers and that had an adverse affect on his business. Imagine showing up for an event only to be told there’s not enough to go around because WOTC is stingy. At one big pre-release he had to turn away over ten people because of this. People who drove from other near by towns. This doesn’t go over well so WOTC changed their position. According to the owner this is a huge issue in small issolated town with irregular attendance.

There’s already so much money to be made selling MTG product that it seems silly to jeopardize that with shady practices. To lose your cash cow by trying to milk a few extra bucks, how inane.

Does WOTC completely pull their product when stores get caught doing this? I would hope so. I wonder if they could get sued for defrauding costumers...

I would imagine it'd be difficult to "pull product" considering how many distributors there are out there. However, I imagine losing your WPN status definitely makes it hard to get the good/current goodies and access to the matchmaking software that enticed players into the store in the first place.

It's not impossible. I understand that Rudy from Alpha Investments is NOT a WPN member and he still manages to make a ****-ton of money from box sales.

As for defrauding customers, can WOTC even get involved in that way? What about those $1 re-packs that appear at Dollar Tree. No one in their right mind can pretend you'll get anything more than a 20 cent jank bulk uncommon out of them. Or those silly "bundle" boxes at Wal-Mart. Both of these operate on the premise the consumer "might" get something decent at odds astronomically worse than Wizards own products.

Well, for starters, its one thing to admit that it's a repack, another to treat it as a completely sealed product. (And for what its worth, one of those bundle boxes I got at Target had a full Teferi commander deck).

This just seems like stupid greed in the highest. How much effort do you have to go through to open packs, pull out cards, and then reseal them well enough to where its atleast passable to the untrained eye? Core 19 has no cards above $20, and only 4 above $10. So all that work (not to mention the risk of losing a lot more if you're caught) on the offhand chance you might get to cheat a Vivien out?

    Doesn't seem worth it.

It's not, but people do it anyways.

The other anecdote I've heard of a similar nature are LGS owners opening pre-releases, pulling the promo card, then selling the opened box on eBay or whatever. Either with a jank promo or just straight up missing the card altogether. My understanding is these pre-release boxes are distributed only to WPN members. I confess I don't actually know what the policy is to governing pre-release boxes. So such antics may well be within their rights??

Then there's the WPN owners straight up selling FNM cards on eBay for a pumped up price. Theoretically not even bothering to distribute them to FNM players. I think this was a big thing with the FNM Fatal Push.

What mystifies me is LGS owners do it, but players don't notice?

To be fair my LGS receives more pre-release kits and promos than he has players attending events. He’ll sell the pre-release kits in bulk for a good price. He sells leftover promos online. An opponent hits me with Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker and I only have two lands left in my library along with a Darksteel Colossus. Mirko is milling me until I hit four lands which I don’t have. Colossus gets milled, its replacement effect puts it back into my library and Mirko’s trigger is then still milling to four lands. Rinse and repeat.
Is this how it would play out?
Is there a way to interupt this loop?

  • posted a message on Why does WoTC think 20 Rat colony decks are legal in singleton?
This is not a new issue, it's been around since 2004 with the printing of Relentless Rats. WOTC has stated many times that this is a deck construction related ruling. I cannot find the source yet, but if you search up Relentless Rats you might find their/a response.
But ultimately it is WOTC's game and they have the authority to rule how they choose. Arena even more so.

Singleton is just a format with its own deck construction rules. Both Relentless Rats and Rat Colony have wording that ignores construction limits, it's really just that simple. The number of cards allowed in a deck is a construction issue, not a format legality issue.

In the end it works that way because they say it does, and within the framework of the Comp Rules they feel confident that this issue is covered.
For clarity it would be nice if they just made a rule that states something to the effect of "if a card says you can have any number of that card in your deck this overrides card limit rules for singleton formats", just because of the hyper-literal rules nit-pickers.
