Ultimate Masters: MMI Review

I mostly remember him from a hilarious wizards article regarding the cycle he's a part of. To think those guys were pretty much the OG titans way back then. Nowadays he's kinda meh.

Drew Tucker art because what screams double blue mana more loudly than the Silver Surfer?

Goodness Teysa, you look awfully generic when you don't have your hair done...

Also holy cow Birds of Paradise is in the Gruul kit. I struggled to imagine how that kit would do anything interesting and I guess there's my answer.

The hilarity of annoucing "I will Declare Dominance" just isn't enough incentive to run such a situational and mana costly combat trick.

I get the feeling this is going to be Magic the Gathering's answer to Infinity War like how Battlebond was Magic's answer to Overwatch/Battleborn/Fortnite, Kaladesh was the answer to the Star Wars hype, and the Gatewatch as a whole are their answer to the Avengers and the Justice League. The main difference is there's a spark instead of a gauntlet and Nicol Bolas will only destroy half of Ravnica rather than the universe. We get it Wizards, you guys watch lots of movies and play lots of video games :p

Isn't Dromar worse? Half of the time he will bounce himself.

Still, bouncing a chunk of the field is a lot better than paying 3 for hopefully more than 4-5 life points.

I feel on of the reasons C18 failed besides stingy reprints is the themes were just really boring. Nature's Vengeance actually had to lie about lands.dec being about ramping into big creatures because WOTC would never in a million years give it the cards an actual lands.dec would use. Exquisite Invention has already been done twice in this series of precons and better. Subject Reality is slow, boring, and has little in the way of big game winning plays. Adaptive Enchantment was the most interesting one which is why I see 2-3 of these on store shelves as opposed to the floods of the other 3 precons but golly did it suffer from the reprint stinginess.

So yeah, I just hope for decently designed precons with themes that are fun, interesting, and well outlined. Also go back to the days where you didn't mind reprinting things like Wrath of God and Grave Pact if you're gonna mark up the MSRP. You can't make your cake and then not let us have any.

Oros is probably the worst of the bizarro Primeval dragons, much like how his counterpart Treva, the Renewer is the worst of the regular primeval dragons. Not that I'm really saying anything incredible about both sets of primevals as those dragons have aged horribly in general. So congrats Oros you're especially underwhelming.

Everyone and their mom played Meren of Clan Nel Toth until they realized that their every opponent and their mom will want to kill them right from the very beginning of the game for playing that commander. The Gitrog Monster was another thing that like, everyone tried out and then very quickly realized that it is not a fun commander to play against at all so they stopped playing it.

I remember The Ur-Dragon being everywhere when commander 2017 came out. It was not uncommon for me to be playing with 1 or even 2 other Ur-Dragon players alongside myself. Nowadays I am like, the only one who still busts the ur-dragon out as far as I can see. I guess everyone else realized that playing a dragon deck is like bringing a chainsaw to a gun fight. That, and Wizards seems really reluctant on giving the ur-dragon new toys that are actually good. Even core 2019 had like, Lathliss and Nicol Bolas out of the zillions of dragons it introduced. I miss you so much Dragons of Tarkir...

A few people I know thought Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire looked fun on paper and then realized the card is absolute garbage in practice to the point where even the legends original would probably make a better commander. Judging by common observation in this thread so far as well as my own, Arcades, the Strategist is the high definition picture of a One Hit Wonder.

Jodah, Archmage Eternal is an interesting case in that a lot of people were really hype for him but then I saw nobody actually playing him. If I didn't know any better I'd swear that the only legendary creatures in Dominaria were Muldrotha and Jhoira. Hey don't look at me I totally would have built 5 color Bishonen tribal with Jodah if magic had more bishonen guys than Jodah himsef, Mairsil, the Pretender, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, Will Kenrith, Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer, Ramirez DePietro, and Phelddagrif.

Jund is probably the best for a budget player. You can run a fairly inexpensive mana fixing set with
    Tainted Wood
    Tainted Peak
    Canyon Slough
    Sheltered Thicket
    Cinder Glade
    Smoldering Marsh
Check lands, and the usual suspects: Command Tower and Path of Ancestry.

In terms of commander, I'd say Prossh, Skyraider of Kher is your best choice. His tokens provide you with so much utility, whether it would be a draw engine with Skullclamp or turning a Predator Dragon into a sudden punch in the throat. Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund is the popular commander, but he's actually best off in the 99 actually, as you can pull him out of nowhere with a Dragonstorm or turn a Living Death into an instant win.

I'd even go as far as to say that Prossh might actually be technically better than The Ur-Dragon as a dragon tribal commander just because of the extra utility from those tokens. Prossh is just that broken.

Ok this is going into my every EDH deck with red and creatures in it no matter how much worse it makes these decks. This is a lottery I want to play always and forever.
