I posted this on the storm boards, so I'll post here too. I top8'd a 1k this weekend with Doomsday
My list:
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/topless-doomsday/
Me and the crew rock up to the venue about an hour before it starts and I spent some quality time with the toilet due to overindulgence in chinese food the night before. I didn't have a Consign//Oblivion before the morning of so my friends and I cracked a couple boosters and pulled one about 15 minutes before the start. About 44 people turned out. 6 rounds, cut to Top 8.
Note: I added roughly how I boarded and occasionally a bit about why(from memory/based on how I think I'd do it since I didn't take notes).
Round 1 vs GR Sneak Attack ----------------------------
This match was on stream. www.twitch.tv/videos/170200838
It starts around the 35 minute mark. It should be on youtube eventually I think if that video goes away. I think they talk about my deck for a bit and then the match starts. I haven't watched it back so hopefully the description from my notes isn't too far off.
It looked like a normal Mono-R Sneak list, just with a green splash. Not sure what for.
G1 I play Badlands and Duress away one of their 2 Chalices. They don't have acceleration so they just play mountain for turn and keep the chalice in hand. I Therapy it and win a turn later with a basic pile. After the match I asked why they held back the chalice and they said they thought I was on BR Reanimator based on the Badlands so chalice on 0 was relatively weak.
+2 Echoing Truth, +1 Consign//Oblivion, +1 IoK
-4 Therapy
I don't like Therapy post-board because they have so many different things to hit that it's almost useless blind. I'd rather have bounce and duresses. Sure sometimes you'll duress and see double Trini or triple chalice, but you could also Therapy and name Chalice and hit and they'll still have double Trini and a blood moon or whatever.
G2 they land a Chalice on 1. I Burning Wish for By Force on my turn 2. On their turn 3 they hardcast Inferno Titan. I destroy the Chalice but Wish was my only business and I don't win before I die to the Titan.
G3 they mull to 5. I Duress and see Chalice and Trinisphere, Inferno Titan and 2 Mountains. I take the Chalice and hope to kill before the 3Ball comes down. I win on turn 3 with nearly the same pile as g1.
Round 2 vs 4C Loam-----------------------------------
G1 They have liliana but no real threats. I have an anemic hand, but I manage to field 3 black sources and hardcast Doomsday with an LED on board to their Lili with 5 loyalty. I intend to build this pile: [Probe, AoI, LED LabMan, Probe] which wins through Lili ultimate if they don't draw something to kill my LED or LabMan. Unfortunately I bungle the pile (my only misbuilt pile all day) and swap the LED and first Probe. I scoop.
+2 Echoing Truth, +1 IoK
-2 Therapy, -1 Duress
Similar reasons to the previous match. They have a diversity of hate athough some is creatures, so I diversify my anti-hate. Not totally sure about the numbers here.
G2 I fire off Empty the Warrens for 10 gobs on t2 or 3 and it gets there, barely.
G3 I mull to 5. I fetch around their Wasteland. They land Lili on t3. Around turn 5 I somehow scrape together a kill with exactly enough storm. Don't have notes but I think it involved Brainstorming to put a Wish back into my deck after Doomsday.
Round 3 vs Dark Depths----------------------------
G1 they're on the play and start Swamp, Petal, Petal and I think I'm just dead but they play Sylvan Library and pass. My hand is a little slow. I fetch basics and cantrip. They brick pretty hard off library. On my turn I Brainstorm into something ridiculous and make about a jillion Drills (really only like 15).
+2 Echoing Truth, +1 IoK
-2 Duress, -1 Therapy
I think you need at least 1 ETruth in just for the chance at bouncing Marit Lage or random permanent based hate they might bring in. Your targeted discard is just ok against them because it can't hit lands, so I diversify my options a bit. Looking at lists online though, many are playing mindbreak trap in the board. Perhaps -2 Therapy, -1 Duress would be safer.
G2 was probably my favorite of the day. My draws are a bit trashy and they get the combo together quickly. Staring down Marit Lage, I cantrip a couple times and set up a Wish on top with Echoing Truth Below it. Double LED, Probe into the wish and Tendrils for only 9 copies, leaving my opponent at 2. Take one hit from the eldritch horror, then bounce it. Opponent got a little salty about my "topdecks" but didn't realize i'd set it up that way. At this point we'd both expended quite a few resources and are topdecking. I am able to set up a pass-the-turn pile a couple turns later and kill with a storm count of 4.
Round 4 vs Czech Pile/4c Control------------------------------
G1 I mull to 5 and manage to get there since my opponent's draws weren't great. No notes on my pile but I think it was a Lab Man kill because I couldn't get enough storm.
+2 Defense Grid, +1 IoK
-1 Wish, -1 Petal, -1 Preordain
You're planning to play a longer game so cutting a little action is fine. When you cut a wish, Empties aren't as likely so cutting a petal is good. If you wanted to keep the Wish in you could cut another preordain instead. That might even be better.
G2 they mull to 5 and I'm pretty pleased but try not to show it. However, I can't for the life of me find a Doomsday or Wish to go with my Ritual, LED, and Probe. They Hymn me on t2 or 3, Snap-Hymn on turn 4 or 5, and start attacking/DRS-ing. They get me pretty low, and I wish for and cast Massacre to try to buy time. They rip Leovold and I die anyway.
G3 I resolve Defense Grid but again I can't find a business spell for too long and die to like 3 DRS's.
Round 5 vs Goblins---------------------------------
I'm playing against a guy who plays at my LGS and I feel a little bad about having to dreamcrush someone I know but what can you do. They are a very good goblins player so I know I have to be on my toes even though it's a fine matchup.
G1 I cantrip and cantrip and can't find action and die to the goblin horde. I am concerned about my chances at top8 at this point.
-3 Duress
+2 ETruth, +1 IoK
Duress is Kind of Bad I think. IoK can hit a creature in a pinch. I assume they're going to have some kind of permanent-based disruption so the ETruth's come in. Worst case scenario they reset Aether Vial. Mindbreak Trap is a concern but if you therapy the turn you go off, that's really the only thing relevant to name so you generally won't miss. I suppose they could have Pyroblast but I've never had a goblins player bring it in against me. It's a nonbo with the chalices they probably bring in.
G2 I mull to 5 but my opponent has no real interaction, just beats, and wasn't fast enough. On the last possible turn I get my ***** together and give em the drills.
G3 they mull to 5 and keep something like double Wasteland, double Vial, Lackey. Not bad for 5 I guess Potential quite good. The game ends on t3 or 4 with me having only basics and him not drawing real disruption.
Round 6 vs Intentional Draw--------------------
It's a clean cut to top8 so we ID.
Quarterfinals vs Omni Sneak---------------------
I sit down and start *****-talking myself a bit, telling my opponent about my curse of never being able to get past the first round of Top8, no matter the format. I jokingly wish them luck in the rest of top8.
G1 I summarily smoke them. I Duress a FoW, then another, and then give them the Drills on t3. I enthusiastically promise them the wheels will come off soon.
+2 Defense Grid, +1 IoK
-1 Preordain, -2 Petal
Goblins aren't really part of the plan here so petals can come out but I like to keep in all the wishes just to have business density. Cutting one cantrip is acceptable in most matchups if you feel you need the slot, so a preordain goes away. IoK maybe isn't the best but post-board they'll have extra countermagic so even though it can't hit most of their combo pieces I feel it's worth the slot. Defense grid is obvious. Putting it in off SnT to their Griselbrand feels great (even if you still lose).
G2 I probe and see spell pierce and a turn 2 Show and Tell into Griselbrand. I therapy and they pierce it. They SnT in Griselbrand, I drop in Defense Grid. They tank for a bit and pass without attacking. I don't rip the ritual I need, and on their turn they draw 14, SnT in Omniscience, Cunning Wish for Intuition for 3x Emrakul and I scoop it up.
G3 I pull the countermagic from their hand leaving them with a few fatties. I cantrip and have a kill set up for next turn, I think turn 3 or 4. After fetching and probing I am at 15. On their turn, they rip Sneak Attack and sneak in Emmy to hit me for exactsies.

itselmosworld posted a message on Saheeli Evolution/ChordHas anyone been playing with any number of Lotus Cobra? With fetches and Renegade Rallier it opens up a lot of mana. Don't know if it's been said here, but it also opens up a T2 kill.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
T1: land and Mana dork
T2: cobra then play fetchland. Fetch an untapped source, Play Renegade Rallier, bring back fetchland. Fetch, play Saheeli, copy Rallier fetch, Eldritch evolution for guardian.
So you need 1x bird, 1x cobra, 1x evolution 1x renegade Rallier (or 2x evolution), 1x saheeli, 1x land and 1x fetchland by T2. So not extremely likely but still possible. -

TheoryCraft posted a message on Saheeli Evolution/ChordPosted in: Deck Creation (Modern)Quote from Zamite »I've been playing the deck using AutmnLily's list linked a few pages back and theres a few things I noticed that I would like other people's takes on.
First, our mana is god awful and could be a lot better. I often find myself screwed on colors because I either fetched wrong or got ghost quartered. What can we do about this? I dont think 10 fetches and five different shocks is right. We are too fragile in this regard.
Second, we don't play nearly enough things at instant speed to get our combo through reliably. Instead of wondering if the coast is clear and just going for it or deciding not to, I want to be able to threaten them with something that will value them at instant speed. As it stands, you basically have to just repeatedly tap out and hope they waste their cards or that you out-value them. I'm not sure this is the best.
I haven't had any issues with the mana base and I've been running a derivation of @JochemW's list, which is arguably in some sense more mana-intensive (i.e.: it has a stronger R presence with mainboard Blood Moon). Between having 4 Birds of Paradise and 2 Noble Hierarch, coupled with 4 Oath of Nissa, mana-fixing should not be an issue, right? Regarding the combo piece, I've enjoyed running the deck as a midrange deck first and foremost with the possibility of combo. Even if you don't use Felidar Guardian to combo straight up, its blink ability on cards such as Kitchen Finks or Oath of Nissa is great value. Your opponent will spend so much time trying to combat your value-train that the combo should be relatively open when you go for it. And if they are holding back their resources to stop the combo, you should be able to kill them through your mid range value led by Voice of Resurgence and Nahiri. Personally, I feel as though trying to run the deck as a Splinter Twin-lite (i.e. play instant speed into Splinter Twin) is just bad because it is a worse version of that deck. Just my 2 cents. -

Swindley posted a message on GWx Vizier CompanyPosted in: ComboQuote from khaosknight69 »Ballista is amazing vs infect and affinity and elves and delver and the mirror especially.
The entity and Rhonas hate come from a place of informed analysis, not spite. I don't want to play 3 mana creatures that don't do anything on their own and require a minimum of 3 mana + other creatures on the field to attack or block. I don't want to t3 CoCo into Rhonas and then have to hold up 3 mana on t4 if I want to attack or block with him. Unless you have a creature with 2 power out, double that mana requirement to 6.
Go look at the druid/vizier lists that have topped or placed in leagues and tourneys. Virtually all of them are playing Ballista, and that's because it's clearly the best card.
In your response, could you explain the matchup you'd prefer to have Rhonas or Entity as your wincon? I can't think of any personally.
Have you actually tested this? Because what you're saying is not true at all. And weird lists exist online because you can't play the deck properly. Getting all the creatures in your deck, stacking infinite bolsters and gaining infinite life is not viable online, so you need a win con that takes little time and wins on the spot.
Playing in paper is totally different, and you can set up win in many different ways.
Rhonas is miles better against all deaths shadow and control decks, where ballista is an embarrasment. Play a ballista for 2 against death's shadow that just gets fatal pushed and ping them for 2? Whereas Rhonas can be an unbeatable threat against some decks. Against all decks with big creatures, Rhonas can do a lot of work. And the opposite, against affinity, elves and mirror, ballista is good. They are good against very opposite decks. Though being a hit off coco, and chordable, like you can win through rest in peace if ballista or duskwatch has hit the gy.
They both have their weaknesses, but when casting a coco, I'd rather have another live hit and another chance off winning with coco if that's your only payoff when you have the combo.
I could see running ballista in side against the small creature matchups, but I had in in the deck for a long time, and after drawing it so many times against death's shadow, tron, grixis shadow/control, it just felt so bad. Quite often I've chorded for Rhonas against jund or other grindy decks, when no other cards would win. It won alone through a board of ooze and double goyf, because with it and som random 2 power creatures and 3/6 mana up they could never attack.
And most importantly, Rhonas seems better in the difficult matchups. I could see a ballista in the side, and swap them for the small creature matchups. -

I'd say there's no way to deny luck plays a massive factor in things.
You can play everything perfectly, but If you only draw 1 land in 5 turns, you're gonna lose. If you draw a land every turn, you're gonna lose. Your opponent top decks their 1 of sideboard hate at the perfect moment, you're gonna lose. You meta perfectly, but somehow still end up facing your worst match up, chances are you're gonna lose. Your opponent is beating you down with 1-2 dudes, and somehow you just don't draw any of your 15 pieces of removal... You're gonna lose, Etc, etc.
Or it works the other way too.
You put no thought into your meta choice, and just play the deck you like, by luck of the draw happen to dodge all your bad match-ups, and hey, you just slayed that tournament. Or maybe You do end up against your worst match, but they get mana screwed and you get the win anyway. Or how about that time you top decked that sideboard card JUST IN TIME, and hey you just won, purely because of good luck. Or remember that game where you just happened to draw your entire combo in your opening hand?
Luck plays a massive part in this game.

After testing so many different variants, and having success with pretty much all of them, I'm convinced this shell is just flat out good. I feel like i'm doing really dang good in testing no matter how I set up the deck. Granted i'm testing on Cockatrice, so there's a good chance i'm just matching up against inexperienced players, but it's still promising results, and convinces me this deck is worth playing right now.
The 5c list ran surprisingly well. The main drawback of the 5c list is obv the mana base. I basically left out all the bells and whistles of any tech lands, and just went straight for color. Yeah it's 5 colors, but it's really a GW deck with small splashes. With the mana base set up, and the 8 dorks, I never had any issues with casting my cards.
Siege Rhino unsurprisingly is a friggin house. He can stabilize a game basically on his own, or close the show within a few turns. Blinking with Cat feels great, but copying with Saheeli is just insane, and puts absurd pressure on the opponent. Casting it wasn't in issue when drawn, but easily the best Evo target to sac Voice into. Feels super powerful.
4 Finks is value city, and felt pretty good. Another good card to blink with Cat, and you can even reset it after persisting once. Between Voice, and Finks, it's really hard for opponents to deal with everything, and still be able to stop our combo.
Turns out Tireless Tracker is really good. Hard to see the cards power until you play with it, but you, AND your opponent will quickly realize this guy needs to be dealt with ASAP, or he will get out of control quick.

So have I gone totally mad in the lab?.... or am I onto something with this one?
Rhino would be such a crazy Copy/Blink target, and probably hands down the strongest thing you can Evo into. Which also solves the issue of not having a good 4 drop slot.

-The art style is so goofy, childish, and cartoonish now.
-OP Creatures taking over the game. Magic has essentially became Pokemon TCG, where almost every strategy involves turning guys sideways.
Every single deck attacking with an army of cartoons doesn't make me feel like a powerful wizard at all.

Also, as much as I love seeing this deck get popular, part of me does get slightly bummed out. This deck has been my baby for years. I'm sure some Pro will get credit for "inventing" Gifts Storm, but i've been playing lists like this for almost 3 years now, and never saw anything like it before mine. I'm not trying to brag, though i'm sure it comes off like that, but for my own sanity, here's my first list from all the way back in Aug 10, 2014
http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/developing-competitive-modern/564710-ur-storm?page=6#c144
4 Goblin Electromancer
3 Pyromancer Ascension
-Search-
4 Serum Visions
4 Sleight of Hand
4 Peer through Depths
3 Gifts Ungiven
-Ritual-
4 Manamorphose
3 Pyretic Ritual
3 Desperate Ritual
-Disruption-
4 Remand
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Past in Flames
1 Noxious Revival
1 Grapeshot
-Land-
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Shivan Reef
3 Steam Vents
3 Island
1 Mountain
3 Blood Moon
2 Anger of the Gods
3 Spell Pierce
3 Echoing Truth
2 Empty the Warrens
2 Shatterstorm
Obviously the new lists are a bit different, but i'm pretty sure I was the first person to come up with this concept. Even playing more Mancers over Ascension because of how good he is with Gifts.

Artifact win is TERRIBLE.
1
Ad Nauseam is going to be the premier instant speed combo.
But Griselbrand lists, and Necrotic Ooze lists can win instant speed also.
Bubble Hulk can also win instant speed. It's worth noting the combo is actually immune to removal as well, despite being a creature based combo.
Outside of those though, I don't think any other combo can win entirely instant speed.
1
There is literally no reason to run it over Mogg-Reveillark-Body Double combo.
