I have a big mana/hydra Marath deck where this'll be right at home. I can easily see this creating 'better have that wrath' boardstates with the deck... or just same-turn wins with some haste/trample effects or just Warstorm Surge...

That said, it is unlikely to find a home in my monogreen-in-works or Momir Vig.

Imma drop a couple of suggestions, then.

Damia, Sage of Stone 'landfall matters' pseudo control: a deck focusing on any and all effects that can abuse a lot of land in play/your hand/graveyard, and milling them between said zones for benefit - and of course, getting more every turn with Damia. I posted about this earlier, incidentally...

I run a fairly effective 'landfall matters' Damia deck, with a ton of Explore/Sakura-Tribe Scout effects, spellshapers (<3 Dreamscape Artist), the few actual 'landfall' effects worth running (Khalni Heart Expedition, Seer's Sundial, Lotus Cobra, Avenger of Zendikar and Eternity Vessel), things like Trade Routes, Groundskeeper, Crucible of Worlds to keep my land-related engines running, a number of Fog effects (Constant Mists being an absolutely all-star) because it is actually both profitable and amusing to keep people guessing... and of course a fairly hefty removal/protection/counterspell package for the lady herself because even in this kind of deck, seven mana is a lot and for some reason Damia makes people scramble for their removal...

The deck wins with some combination Avenger of Zendikar, Words of Wilding, Words of Waste, Words of Wind, Pack Rat, Spitting Image, Psychic Spiral (I often am near decking myself before the game is over), Sisters of Stone Death, Vulturous Zombie, Worm Harvest and Mindleech Mass.

Not quite your typical Damia control/combo, but it's fun to play.

Grixis-coloured discard/pinger/the Rack style deck - I run an 'aggressive Crosis' type list which is centered on specters, quick powerboosts like Anthem of Rakdos, making everyone discard and then punishing people for not having enough hand size. Oppressive, gets you hate and probably veers towards 'un-fun' I suppose... but there you go.

Bant exalted/enchantress/equipment voltron (or non-voltron) approach might work. My Bant deck is a Treva, the Renewer pillowfort (talk about the level of 'Fort Knox is space') that wins via the dragon herself enchanted to be something like 14/14 flying, trample, hexproof, indestructible, vigilance and [insert couple other keywords here for good measure), the deck consisting currently of 41 enchantments. My friend has almost completely different approach, in a very aggressive voltron Derevi, bringing the damage home with equipment and a buttload of Might of Oaks variants, backed by some control.

Wizard tribal is also a thing worth considering, I've seen it do things.

Naya/RG 'big mana' headed by something like Rosheen Meanderer/Marath, Will of the Wild or whatever else you find fun: play all the mana doublers, extra mana effects, proceed to drop out gigantic Apocalypse Hydras and Comet Storms. Enjoy.

Brion Stoutarm + Threaten variants + whatever else you feel like playing in Boros (I play a handful of things like Malignus and Hamletback Goliath, artifacts to ramp/draw, and things that help Brion either do more damage [Gratuitous Violence, Furnace of Rath] or do his thing repeatedly [Rings of Brighthearth, Thousand-Year Elixir]. Simple enough, varies by game as it depends somewhat on what your opponents play, and quite nothing beats the fun of killing someone with their own commander damage. Except maybe Giant's Ire.

Those from the top of my head, anyway.

...whoa. Straight into my nostalgia nerves.

This thing made a creature almost impossible to deal with back when me and my friends were starting Magic with the 6th edition starter pack. From memory, the only answers in the very few cards we had were... um, Terror, and then Rhox could slide past the enchanted creature. Or something like that. Fun times.

If I had a Doran deck I might slide that in for the sheer nostalgia and potential power factor, but besides that probably not x)

A very fun angle for tokens is, in my opinion one of the best mechanics out there: Devour. Thromok the Insatiable can get all kinds of insane with the right set of help - or act as a backup wincon for an actual token swarm strategy.

Another I had in with half a dozen different generals before I found one (rather, two) that really clicked, is red/blue steal spells. In the end, I ended up splitting blue (permanent) stealing and red (temporary) stealing to two very different decks. Tomorrow, Azami's familiar is a monoblue control with a heave subtheme of 'control enchanted permanent' as a way to win, but that might get close to Memnarch territory. The red deck is Brion Stoutarm, who just goes beautifully hand-in-hand with temporary steals as a very useful sac engine from command zone. Then you can double the silliness with something like Gratuitous Violence/Illusionist's Bracers/Overblaze. Plus, you get to play Giant's Ire, and there are few things more satisfying than killing someone with their own commander damage.

Intet, the Dreamer is my pet deck and it's been a fairly consistent set of funsies. With heavy investment on topdeck manipulation, topdeck cheating like Pyxis of Pandemonium, Killer Instinct, Impromptu Raid, all of the Mind's Desire/Unexpected Results variants there is (yeah, they are a nonbo with topdeck manipulation but who cares, they're fun!) and enough big creatures/things like Ogre Battledriver/Primal Forcemage to make things shake. Oh, and Possibility Storm/Teferi's Puzzle Box to mess with people since you rarely care about your own hand that much, and it's fun. Wink

If you want a deck that you can pop up every now and then when the people in your playgroup have forgotten exactly what it does (and you have no ban against mass LD - if you do, skip right ahead please), you give the idea of my Oros, the Avenger a whirl (any general with access to red and white can do, really. Black is good for card draw though). Basic premise: artifact ramp like the world is about to be on fire, play things like Wound Reflection/Rage Reflection/Darksteel Forge/True Conviction, float mana for Jokulhaups and Oros, end up with a mostly clean board that conveniently has your main dragon and said enchantments about. I only play the deck somewhat rarely (though I do have seventeen decks at the moment, so 'rarely' is kinda for every deck anyway), but it is very fun to play when I do.

This might or might not be near Nekusar or Marton a bit, but I know it barely shares any cards with my friends' Nekusar deck so Imma write up shortly anyway: Crosis, the Purger, theme of discarding, specters, balls-to-the-walls aggression (talking about Anthem of Rakdos, Need for Speed and stuff here), drawing-with-pain as only black can do (Dark Tutelage, Pain Seer, Phyrexian Etchings and friends). What can I say, sometimes it's fun being the aggressor and a total pain in ze rear. Making people discard sure makes 'em hate your guts. Wink

I think those about cover my decks that have themes you're not using in your decks already. I think.

We pile the plane cards and retain one mandatory roll as the first thing on your first main phase each turn. (The rest of the rolls cost that 2 more as per usual.)

I do like the idea of using two dice though, I might suggest it next time we play...

  • posted a message on Does banning fast mana make for better games?
I am sort of with Galspanic here - sometimes games end faster due to something like Mountain->Sol Ring into T2 Krenko and the player having otherwise fitting pieces in his hand. But... uh, so what? We definitely manage to balance those fast 10-minute wins with two-hour attrition-fests 'cause those fast mana rocks are still only a small handful of cards in a deck - if people even play them. In our meta, not every deck has fast mana artifacts and manages to win games against those that do still because politics decide far more than T1 Sol Ring/Mana Vault ever does. Every game is different.

I would be sort of neutral on the banning of those a la french list, in the end. Not that I really can see why they'd need banning either, though.

If I didn't have Thromok the Insatiable for my Gruul general of choice, this guy would be a very, very solid second pick. I'm still hoping someone in my meta crafts a deck with him so I can see the guy in action Grin

  • posted a message on Is Aggro Fair?
I have only one problem with early game Voltron style aggro. They are boring... to play. I had a fairly efficient Numot, the Devastator/Ruhan of the Fomori that was all about ramping to general, making him unblockable/double strike and then throwing in a double damage/extra combat step effect. It was efficient, got me some fairly early wins... but it got boring since it did the same exact thing every game.

    BUT,

...that's just me. I have no problem anyone else playing such a deck and occasionally getting my ass handed to me on turn 5 or 6 because I was playing one of my less efficient late-gamey decks. It happens, nature of the beast n' all that.

Now, if it's tempo-ish beater that's not solely commander damage, I'm even more for seeing those. Those are actually hard to pull off in a multiplayer table and win a game with, so I give serious kudos to anyone trying.

I have a deck with this type of idea, though a bit different (read: evil) flavor: Darigaaz, the Igniter (though any Jund general works as the general is mostly there for looks and a backup option for secondary wincon). The wincon of the deck is almost solely to burn people based on hand size. Black helps keep things in check just as blue might, but some hate is just easier to find in black (namely, keeping board clear of critters)

(Warning: before reading on, let it be known that this deck gets you a lot of hate.)

    A quick rundown:
aforementioned draw engines aplenty, Temple Bell, Howling Mine, Font of Mythos and friends, also things like Anvil of Bogardan and Price of Knowledge.
making creature playing pointless and/or lethal, like Lethal Vapors, Burning Sands, Spreading Plague
A fairly gigantic removal suite, preferably things that have alternatives: Putrefy, Rain of Thorns, Wreak Havoc, Hull Breach, Creeping Mold. Bonus points if it can target a land as people with less lands are less likely to also target your rear with anything actually dangerous.
Some nice chunks of sorcery-shaped ramp: Kodama's Reach, Cultivate, the works - accordingly a fairly basic-heavy landbase since you'll want a LOT of land with this deck.
Repercussion and damage-based wipes that also make people sac lands, like Wildfire, Destructive Force or Devastating Dreams
Reverberate variants because you'll never run out of things you want to copy in this deck, and it makes some combinations just backbreaking, particularly our primary wincon...
...which is obviously every Gaze of Adamaro variant there is.

Less Maros, more hate-your-face and removal out of the wazoo. Fun to play, slightly less fun to play against.
    ---
Swapping black for blue would give you different options, better draw and the joy of mass-bounces like Evacuation. Less creature and land hate though, but counterspells... I dunno. I see both as workable options, just know what you need - ramp, draw and copy spells aplenty plus ways to survive until you're ready to go off.

I second Thromok the Insatiable for something very fun. I have had a Thromok deck almost since I started playing EDH, and it never gets old finding new ways to deliver a metric ton of hellion to someone's face. I have to yet claim a turn where I kill three players with summoning huge Thromok, killing one player with a Pandemonium proc, another with Thromok commander damage 'cause trample/haste, and third with a Fling. But I shall keep trying.

Aww, no love for Ruhan of the Fomori? :p

Granted, not the most powerful or obvious choice, but it's a fun deck for a bit to strap him up and watch him get lethal quick with the right set of unblockable/double strike/double damage and fell people in one... not that you get to decide which one, but that's part of the fun.

Now, for a more serious suggestion... eh, I think a lot have been said already in that regard.

  • posted a message on Meanest cards in EDH?
I have to agree with a lot of people with it being a lot about who's playing and what else said player is doing. My Oros, the Avenger's gameplan is essentially some artifact shenanigans with the back-up plan of 'Obliterate + float mana for the dragon himself' and my playgroup is just okay with it. We're casual, but we've also been gaming together for many, many years - the games just wouldn't be the same if people didn't try to do evil things and the occasional backstab when situation arises...

...I do admit that it wouldn't be my first deck of choice in a new playgroup before I felt around a bit what's the consensus on doing things like mass LD, but 'mean' is just as subjective as 'fun' in the end.
