Anyone else pissed that Naya Control is doing better than us? lol -.-
I think that was due to the fact that it was an unexpected deck played by a top tier player. I've seen several people play the deck since then and they are doing horrible with it, that's why I don't think Naya Control is going to be a thing. But I could be suprised yet.
Round 1: RDW - Smashed them out hard. 2-0
Round 2: GR Monsters - Was a tough Match wound up winning in game 3.
Round 3: White Weenie - Anger of the gods? 2-0
Round 4: Mono Blue Devotion - Again Anger of The Gods, Doomblade the Master, Never really stood a chance 2-0
Round 5: MBD - Had a tough time with this one, Slaughter Games proved to be a house because he was mainly playing Net Deck so I knew what it was going to be. He took G1, I wound up winning G2&3 after some Counterflux's and Slaughter Games.
Round 6: MBD - Somehow this one played out 2-0 me. His deck was not as strong as the person before him.
All in all, I felt pretty good about Grixis today. Maybe I had an easy route to the finals, but I am not sure why people are having issues with Grixis. So much utility and great win cons.
Gratz! Nice to see people do well with grixis.
I'm curious about your white weenies match-up. When you anger of the gods can't they just Brave the Elements? Some lists have been also splashing red for Boros Charm as well...
Any update on this? Tapatalk has been free for some time now. It's an awesome app, been using for a few weeks now and would really appreciate it if mtgsalvation had support for it. Heard it should be a breeze to add it to the forum.
I should have been 4-0 but I accidentally scryed an Anger of the Gods to the bottom and it cost me dearly against colossal gruul.
Played against Naya Midrange (2-0), Mono blue Devotion (2-0), Colossal Gruul (1-2), and White Weenie (2-0).
This deck crushes the Mono Blue deck, and not surpisingly crushes white weenie (STORMBREATH!).
Also had a funny moment against the Naya player, he dropped a garruk, caller of beasts, and drew 4 creatures, I untap andRakdos's Return his Garruk for 5, kill your garruk discard your hand. All of a sudden those llanowar elves don't look so good..
Not sure I'll keep the haunted plate mail, had it in my hand once and wished it was something else, never got to smash face with it. It would be nice to have another threat on board, I might replace it with a sire of insanity
Could you post the mana base you used for this deck please? Which scry land did you use?
This is where I would want to be/start if I was on grixis.
This just seems like an extremely greedy approach (Dissolve, Anger of the Gods and Hero's Downfall) and with so many guildgates I doubt you'll be able to cast things in time.
One card that for me was also underperforming lately is Ashiok. At first he was awesome but now that people learned that you can simply ignore him he just lost any value he had.
I've been moving towards red black control to be honest. I was playing the superfriends variant with no counters anyway so I just cut blue off completely. With red black you can be greedy enough to play Desecration Demon, Stormbreath Dragon, Hero's Downfall, even whip has more value here along with Chandra. I simply don't see this happening in grixis.
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that Jeff Hoogland is thinking about making a grixis control deck and he is on reddit asking for advice. I think this is an awesome opportunity to get some insight from a pro:
What's the point in running 1 Ashiok? Why not just run Jace, MA instead? Ashiok will get answered when he comes down and he most like will get removed one way or the other.
Shock is very crucial to the deck I feel, but at the same time it won't make the cut to be put up to 4. It's a very crucial spell to have to negate the aggro game-plan's turn 1 guy, tapping out for Ral Zarek and holding up a Shock isn't bad either.
When BBD intially introduced the list in SCG's VS video against CVM he lacked any sort of counterspell. When you're playing blue, this can prove very detrimental, since we can't deal with everything with just our removal and power cards, so I decided to include 4x Syncopate in order to help deal with pesky things like Detention Sphere, Sphinx's Revelation, etc.
Furthermore, I cut Rakdos Keyrune solely because there was no reason for this list to run it. We don't have any reason whatsoever to ramp ourselves to 5 mana and leave ourselves open to free damage. The open slots allowed us to run more copies of spells that we want to see.
To finish this quick spiel, I'm thinking of cutting a Syncopate and Far // Away for 2x Opportunity to help the card advantage against U/W/x since they're so fond of Sphinx's.
Anyway, like I said. I'm taking all sorts of criticism for this!
Yay finally someone else is playing the tap-out build. Your list is extremely similar to mine except I don't run any counters at all. The only problem I had with that was people be able to freely resolve Sphinx's Revelation which put me behind in cards. I've solved that by removing the staticasters from the SB (what's the point if we're running 4 Weirds?) and replaced him with Notion Thief. I'm still testing the deck so will see how that goes. I run 4 Shock as well because I'm scared as hell of aggro but maybe you're right in running only 3 as that card doesn't do much in other matches. I'll post a deck list later.
Cut the AEtherling in the Tap-out build, you don't need him, even as a 1-of you will regret having him in your hand more often than not, I've been playing a similar list for some time now (without him) and he hasn't been missed. Your other threats are sufficient.
Just wanted to say that I've been testing an altered version of BBD's superfriends list and it has been completely awesome. The only game I've lost so far is to B/W Control because I couldn't answer a resolved Obzedat (and I'm running 4 Far//Away). Other than that I'm completely blown away by the list. I cut the 2 Chandra MB because she just didn't do enough, her +1 was most of the time irrelevant and the 0 rarely showed me useful cards, so I'm just running Ashiok, Jace and Ral.
As everyone has been saying, Ashiok is a complete powerhouse. She simply wrecks every deck. People try to burn her down (which means they're not burning our face), attack her, giving us at least an extra turn, simply throw everything they have, and I'm running 4 so I don't mind losing 1 or 2. When you get a big creature with her it's gamebreaking, you stop their attacks so she defends herself and then you can take the offense to them.
Jace is very nice as well since the only draw in the deck is Read the Bones, so he complements that. I've ult'd him several times to simply win the game off the cards I get.
Frostburn is very good in this shell. You will probably always land him turn 2 so you can stop early rampages and swing for 4 if they don't have anything on the board (which will most of the time be the case since we have so much 1 for 1 removal).
The card that surprised me the most though is Shock. I did not expect it to be this good, but being able to answer that turn 1 or 2 play is HUGE. You break any game plan they have and is even relevant to help finish someone off if you've been hitting them with a creature. Very awesome card that I certainly wouldn't have played over Magma Jet, but there you go.
I'm still testing and tweaking the list (and SB) and it's kind of a mess right now so I'll post a list later.
I really like 4 Frostburn as it's an awesome creature that can definitely hold its own and possibly win the game for you. The 2 Chandra's main might actually be good here since you want to tap-out anyway but I'm not really sold on her effectiveness. Ral Zarek could be good for untapping your creatures/Keyrune after you attack. Gonna give it a go and see how it works as I really like playing super-friends variants
Just a rough draft as I am at work, but I could see it being decent. Prpbably throw ratchet bomb in the SB I just dont see any token based decks worth it. And young being in red half the time they will only get a few tokens before young get taken out snd I dont see ratchet being MD material for 1 guy...
If you're going to play a 6-drop then why not just play more AEtherling? I don't get how Niv-mizzet is any better here, he'll just die to whatever removal they didn't use.
The idea is to try and use Steam Augury and Thoughtflare to fuel your graveyard for Chimera and in the meanwhile you can Counter-burn whatever they try to do. As I mentioned before it's been okay in testing but definitely needs tweaking. I don't like Turn // Burn but it's there to deal with heavy creatures. AEtherling is a backup.
Doh, pumpmonkey beat me to it
Looks like a good list. Just don't like the Memory Adepts and Chandras main.

I really like your list too. I don't understand the Mizzium Mortars and Psychic Strike on the SB though...
