Ok, I'm doing what Bogarden Mage suggests, I'm building my decks as though it was restricted.
UPDATE: oops now my Burn Deck has 4 Mental Misstep ... Should Be Restricted
UPDATE: I have found situations since earlier posts where there are suitable replacements for Mental Misstep, but it doesn't change the powerful nature of stopping without recourse any 1-drop spell. The situations are when there's a better counterspell available, but even those decks have space for Mental Misstep. In the end you don't gain much card advantage by countering a 1-drop spell. I'm just happy it's banned in Legacy and Modern. I'm sure I'll come to terms with how many a deck should have.
Thanks for backing me up guys...I guess it's a preference...I don't have to make it into a Crusade...Good point about countering Swords to Plowshares that's definitely seen some play in Vintage...By the way, EDIT COTV was added and a couple others were removed...the pages have different update stamps.
Another example of my irritation is coming up...I'm replacing Lightning Bolt with Mental Misstep in my Dragons' deck. There is no gun to my head. But I'd rather counter Spell Pierce than have my Lightning Bolt countered.
Just bugs me that's all...There's a few cards that could spend some time on the restricted list.
Yeah I guess, I was sort of thinking of countering Ancestral Recall or Spell Pierce or some random artifact or cantrip for value though. Excuse me if I seem abrupt, I've had a hard time adapting to the new breed of Delver decks in Vintage. I did end up putting them in to the Elves Deck. Still want them restricted so I can replace them with Sylvan Messenger or another actual elf. And I am sorry for complaining, but you'll hear me complain every time I make a new non-blue deck and throw in a playset of Mental Misstep.
Ok, this officially bugs me...I'm constructing my first elf deck and I want to put 4 Mental Misstep in off the top. My green elf deck should not contain a playset of counterspells, technically it shouldn't contain 1, but I suppose a single misstep would work. Restrict this "4 of" for every deck. It's too bad too because it adds a dimmension to deck construction...just not the dimension I want.
I'm pulling the Temur part of this deck, so the Lightning Bolts and Bivouac are getting replaced by blue and green threats. As per previous posters suggestion, I'm looking for monstrous green and/or blue creatures costing 4. I'm also adding Leyline of the Lifeforce and Null Rod to the sideboard to deal with Control and Mud respectively.
Modern Masters is a cool set, it's got staples that I'll use in my vintage and kitchen table decks. As far as dual lands go, the fetch lands currently in Khans of Tarkir can be considered "Modern Master" staples. Should throw the enemy colors in too, for good measure. Just a thought.
Here's my take on Discard Control...I'd like to make it blue and black so it doubles as discard, land destruction, and counterspell. I'm afraid it isn't much fun to play against so it's more of a build and store deck. The part that I'm really curious about is the land destruction/discard/counter ratio that might work out in a semi-casual setting.
With 12 creatures that force a discard, I'm quite happy with only Hymn to Tourach and Mind Twist as my discard cards. I'm still pondering the correct number there 4-2, 4-3, 3-3, 3-2. I'm considering more Nyxathid...
Ok, to wit, it makes sense that it can be got around. But, a good example would be Stone Rain, a very reasonable land destruction card. It costs the slot in your deck that the Wasteland card would take, and it costs 2R. Say you have a Sol Ring and Badlands in play. It takes a combo of 3 cards including the 1 in your hand to make the land destruction happen. With Wasteland, say you have 3 in your hand that's 3 lands of your opponents, assuming they are non-fetch non-basic, down the tubes. This is all theoretical, but how much play does it see anyway?!
I feel like this card is very powerful and it's 1 card that I'm stressing about when working with my mana base. Strip Mine was put on the list because it's over-powered. Wasteland is very nearly as powerful in Vintage format yet you can play 4 copies in a deck. Do you see this card being restricted?
I seem to remember fetchlands beyond the standard 1 life-and-sac-for-either-of-these that have been reprinted in Khans of Tarkir. Something like pay 2 life and fetch a basic land, something like this?! Does anyone know if these are real or dreamt up? Thanks in advance.
