More leylines might be an option. I dont know if burn would bring in revelries by default (most lists have few or no targets for it - would be unusual to run 3 leylines)

Kalitas is a decent idea - sort of a mix of baneslayer and rest in peace. I generally dont like double black because its a tall order to have verdict, charm, cryptic, and bb online turn four - and having the wrong mana leads to fetch-shocks that undo the life gain you were looking for.

    Id still try it tho.

leylines hrut burn even if they have reverly(they will not bring them if they dont know about them
you can easylly leyline t0 and then just have dispel or snare up to lock the game

Took my esper list out to a 2-2 tonight but very very close on the losses should have won at least one with a little break my way.

Round 1: 2-0 vs monoblack devotion
New player. Only funny thing was when I was at 8 and he exsanguinates for 5 through a leyline (doesnt target) - almost a fail.

    Round 2: 2-1 vs affinity
Draw enough removal = win. Karn is pretty beastly in this deck tbh esp when I'm path-ramping them into it. Those tokens tend to be 4/4 or 5/5.

    Round 3: 1-2 vs merfolk
G1 drew oodles of removal easy W.
G2 got slapped for like 13 in one turn even though I wrath next turn die to vialed in *****.
G3 horrific. I miss 4th land drop for 2 turns with verdict in hand. He cursecatchers both my t2 think twice and my t3 flashback... t4 I clique myself still dont find land. He cliques me takes a path (da fuq) still dont find land. I block his clique he cliques me again taking verdict and I find land with a settle the wreckage now in hand. On his main step he spreading seas... can't settle. Next turn I draw a white source! he spreading seas AGAIN and swings. death with settle in hand... brutal.

Round 4: 1-2 vs vizier company
G1: t2 druid, t3 vizier logic knot for 2 not enough plays balista infinite from hand lol t3 kill.
G2: he mulls to 4 and its still a ridiculously close game. He has druid and cocos, I path druid in resp, he lays a druid and a vizier, I untap and explosives, and he then just keeps laying finks and combo pieces as I slowly take over.
G3: very close. Unfortunately I'm at 4 life so everything must die until I draw rev or secure. He witnesses for company, I have verdict but cant let him company and then swing at me, so I verdict. He companies on his turn while I'm tapped low to play rhonas and selfless spirit. I have explosives on 2. He untaps and draws a druid. Pumps it twice, I explosives, he sacs spirit and kills me with rhonas. Was hellbent for way too long here leaning on a colonade to stop finks for like 5 turns. Just desperately needed an end game piece for a long time - 2x secure, teferi, jace, or rev.

All told 2-2 matches, 6-5 games. Not awful.

The only obvious change I would make is switching wrath for the 3rd verdict. It is more important to me that my sweeper not get countered by merfolk or death's shadow than having a maybe-relevant alternative to draw vs meddling mage.

Less obvious is finding sufficient mix of cards to beat burn more often than not. It's the one deck that is almost guaranteed to be at the LGS and I'm not sure one rev mainboard and 2 BA in the side is going to get there very often. Just not sure if there's a higher punch card (kor firewalker?) that I could run.

what about 3 leyline in your sideboard?or maybe kalitas?

Hello guys.I was playing grixis control and i would like to try esper right now.Is it any better that grixis in the current meta?

This is a list i tinkered ( https://imgur.com/a/faZTIFx ) any thoughts about impoving it? Moreover what about esper gifts(with iona and or/Elesh Norn) maindeck or as a second plan after sb?

I suggest cutting a Snapcaster or 2, seeing as they're underwhelming in higher numbers for Esper. 4 Field of Ruin is super greedy too, I've had issues playing more than 2, but I sometimes play the 3rd because I'm greedy haha. I suggest trimming 2 Fields for an Island and a Colonnade. Finally, I think that you could move a Fatal Push to the board to play another wincon main, probably a Teferi or a 2nd Secure.

I dont like field of ruin either but its the only way i can see possible to deal with tron.Doesnt jace > teferi in esper ? i mean if you esper charm them x2 and then land a jace and fateseal them its pretty much game over for them

I don't love the sideboard beatsticks, I've mentioned for a while. They can be good, but they're far from uncuttable.

Esper may well be better than grixis. The loss of path to exile hurts non-white control decks so much right now.

mind sending me a 75 as a headstart?

hoooold on. it doesnt stop tron. tron lands only check the name, and this doesnt change the name. so, the tronlands you dont name still work.

thats pretty much the last nail in the coffin as far as i'm concerned.

Urza lands don't check name. They check for land type, in the type field you see "Land - Urza's Tower". So if you name tower on turn 1, their other Urza lands will never be able to "find" tower, meaning the whole tron set is switched off.

Yes fulminator mage is very nice, but its still 3 cmc. I cannot be the only one who has run into issues with that on the draw considering tron gets their turn 3 online more often than not, and they have so many ways to tutor or find lands it can feel like swimming against a current. At least with alpine moon they're playing o stone with 3 lands and needing to activate it with 5 - giving us quite a bit more time to find solutions or press them to a low enough life total that it doesn't matter.

it beats valakut also another bad mu..and its also good vs jeskai (you can 'kill' all of their colonnades at once or negate their azcanta)

I'm now playing at mtgo as well (I'm using a budget version, flooded strands instead of scalding tarns, kalitas instead of collective brutalities, extirpates instead of extractions and precog. field instead of jace (roflmao) and I somehow managed to save ~$260) as I was really tired of xmage's slowness and glitches.
I hope to soon buy the remaining parts, really miss them scalding tarns.

    @Tiemuuu
How are your match ups against tron? I've been losing to tron so many times in these lasts months that I'm just considering forfeiting the goddamn matchup.
I usually have a good time against aggro, combo and midrange decks. On the other hand, I've got abysmal matchups against Blood moons and Urza towers.

bloodmoon isnt something that you can win.You just hope not to run into them.

vs urza f you pack a lot of hate you should be ok(fulminators, fields ,damping)

Really liked your list .But i have a few questions. You are playing with 4 tarpits.Isnt that bad ?i mean you usually need your 4th land to come into play untapped. Moreover how do you feel about grave decks (dredge ,hollow etc) ,valakut decks and tron decks?

I actually have been pretty unimpressed with Anger and Surgical as sideboard options. For Anger, it's usually boarded in versus the go-wide decks like Humans or Elves, or against the graveyard decks. Against the wide-strategies, it usually just gets used as a 1-for-1 or a 2-for-1 at best, because the deck has so much removal and people play around it. It could just as easily be another value card like Electrolyze 90% of the time.

I am also relatively more conservative with siding in Surgical Extraction. I join in the opinion that it's the most over-sideboarded card in Modern. The only deck that I bring it in against that doesn't run graveyard cards is Tron, and even that is a concession to me having a lot of chafe. Most combo decks you can just rely on your countermagic to keep them in check. Tron is now on the downswing due to Dampening Sphere being in more sideboards. The only matchup where Lelyline is probably worse is Storm, since they can bounce Leyline before going off. I also am running Serum Visions over Thought Scour so there is less incentive to keep Surgical.

leyline is bad at grixis contol. If its in you opening hand vs a grave deck you are winning ,BUT if you dont draw it at you opening hand you have 4 dead and/or slow draws in your deck.Plus leyline is narrow.Surgical is all around card ,you can side it vs combo , tron ,grave decks and a ton more.I have been playing 3 surgical and i would never play less than that .

PS i cant even count how many times anger have saved my life or would have saved it if i had drawn it

In your deck, you have exactly 1 card that can kill both tasigur and kalitas, which is a sideboard damnation. Then there is Thalia, Azusa, kiki-jiki, Gaddock teeg and the list goes on and on. The problem with at least half of these cards is, that your fatal push wont hit them easily as well. So you are restricting your options, I do appriciate a diversified spellsuit though. If you say you are fine with it, then that might totally be the cast. Personally, I would always feel like there are too many cards that i wouldnt wanna see (Jace, Vryns prodigy)

all of those cards tou mentioned are things that die to bolt or kcommand (push too) ,only tasigur and kalitas ara bad ones but they dont see that many play and if you meet one you can champblock it all day long with you taigur. You gaint points in mana base by playing cast down.Since i have started playing i didnt miss terminate
