If you're going for flavor, I believe Karona, False God is a must. Her along with a handful of cards to protect you from her and you're golden.
Yes, I'm beginning to agree with this one. Now comes time for some ideas on how to protect myself from her. I've already got a Forcefield that will go into this deck but the problem is that this artifact doesn't normally stick around long. My Maze of Ith will only affect it on one opponent's turn. Ideas?
I play Nekusar, and yes he draws hate, but no one's ever gotten physically upset about facing him. The deck's actually kept the table happy once or twice by countering or bouncing big threats or shuffling Kaalias and Rafiqs off into libraries. I find that as long as you're careful about what you control, and quickly punish anyone with a large hand, the table doesnt typically get too upset. If you enable someone to combo off it's likely because you wheel'd at the wrong time. If you can wheel and you've packed enough control, you should be causing your opponents to walk their combo-pieces into your removal (ideally someone else's freshly drawn removal really). I know that Nekusar is built-around, but it doesnt make it less interesting, at least not in my group.
Rhystic Study generally isn't remove on sight and can quickly net you a lot of cards or at worst slow your opponents down. Because the draw is tied to a rhystic cost and it hoses everyone but you it can stick around for a while-- Generally no one wants to lose a card to remove it, but if you face lots of Aura Shards or similar effects it will be gone in no time.
From my experience if one player doesn't pay the cost others are more likely to stop as well. Also rather than being upset at you for playing it, players get upset at those who chose not to pay the cost.
Gotta agree here. In my meta, Rhystic Study has probably won more games than it reasonably should. All it takes is one slightly short-sighted player at the table being greedy about their mana and suddenly you're netting an extra couple cards every round of turns. It only gets removed when people get tired of you asking, "are you paying the 1?"
I think the only time a proxied deck would bother me is if it's obviously just a Goodstuff deck. If you're proxying to try out a specific strategy that has to synergize in a specific way to work, go ahead and experiment before dropping cash on it. If you are doing it because you like broken and over-powered cards that you can't afford, you might get away with it for one game and then you'll be asked to play something else.
I've recently acquired Kederekt Parasite and my first thought was, "oh no, I only have two red permanents in the deck" and ended up adding Dual Casting among ancouple othera to let my typically idle creatures help wheel. Wheel and Deal is another I'm looking for. Library of Leng performs two awesome functions as well. I've also recently stuck in Azami, Lady of Scrolls because Nekusar and a number of other creatures in the deck are wizards.
Edit: Oh! I almost forgot Vanishing, Nekusar's friendly sweeper-dodge. It has done me a lot of good. Saved my Curiosities and elder masteries a number of times.
It happens with duel decks sometimes. I have the Ajani vs Bolas decks and Ajani's cards are all shifted downward a bit. There's an awkward amount of black on the top of every card except the actual planeswalker, thankfully.
Oh wow, when I clicked on this topic I thought it was going to be about a senior citizen worried that he/she was unable to keep up with the younger players. The OPs parents have simply lost touch with the actual playerbase for the game. They appear to have their notions and are sticking to them. They should probably get on the internet now and then and do some research.
I'm nearly 30, and I play with anyone between the ages of 22 and 55. There are far fewer 12-20 year olds playing at my store.
I'd think that because EDH is a casual format no card will be "banned" right off the bat, but some will simply be unwise to play the way that Fractured Powerstone is nearly useless outside of Planechase. They will howevernban cards if they are somehow abusable or toxic to the format, as usual.
I once used Puppeteer Clique targeting a discarded Rune-Scarred Demon while I controlled a Zombie-Mikaeus. Tutored Altar of Dementia and milled the table out, took everyone's creatures and killed them with them. (Theoretically anyway. They scooped.)
As a close second I once had an opening hand containing Vault of Whispers, Sol Ring, Isochron Scepter and Dispatch. That hurt a few feelings.
What I find is that when given the choice, people aim for Nekusar before they take out my Psychosis Crawler. If the Crawler sticks when Notion Thief is put in it can easily end the game.
Counterspell, Boomerang and Dispatch have been some of the most productive cards I've stuck to the Scepter. There was also one game I played it when the deck was headed by Sharuum that Entomb just ran away with.. I won the crap outta that game.
I have three of the five decks (Prossh, Oloro, and technically Jeleva, but its now Nekusar) and I think Prossh is my favourite. I'm running all three without tutors because I enjoy them as a whole that much. They're definitely worth picking up if you want to get into the mix, but always be aware that the preconstructed decks are capable of being taken in three or four different directions. You will find as you play it that you like certain abilities and that others are less appealing. Build for the strengths and mechanics you enjoy and you will not regret it.
My Sydri deck enjoys it. Played it, animated it, sent it in with lifelink and deathtouch. Or just animate it and let Conjuror's Closet exile and return it each turn. Frankly theres tons of value to get from it if you can animate it though. Just another Dead-Eye Navigator target at that point.
Want to make sure everyone discards to Painful Quandry? Mindcrank is excellent. It made life so difficult last time I dealt with it, but i had lent the deck out, so I was also happy to see the cards make friends. The prevailence of shock-lands also contributes. Keeps them coming in tapped. Its a relatively cheap source of mill that keeps pressure on in concert with other triggered mill ontop of being a combo piece. I don't think I'll be removing it from my mill deck.
Homeward Path is a favourite, as well as the Vows, like Vow of Lightning. Theres one for each colour. Also Mystifying Maze is good in a pinch.
