Out of curiosity, anyone have any links to Merfolk vs omnitell matches? Its surprisingly hard to find any and I was looking to study up on the matchup before I play in a tournament that is heavily populated by omnitell players.
I have been working on my own iteration of the deck and have been playing with the above list for the past couple weeks. A thought I have decided upon is despite having main deck fulminator mages is that they are very lackluster against any decks they can be useful against in practice, so I plan on taking them out of the maindeck and see how that goes. Tron and elves seem to be my problem matchups but affinity/jund/merfolk/infect/burn being in my favor.
My next iteration is the following decklist and I was hoping I could get some feedback from people who have been playing with soulfire grandmaster/grim lavamancer. is SGM worth it with only 7 burn spells? I was thinking having a couple in main would help the burn matchups enough that I could remove some of the antiburn sideboard cards I have and free up some slots. I feel like new Gideon will be a better option than sorin as he is more flexible (creates creatures, pumps team, or is a beater). I plan on picking up the SGM and lavamancers this weekend and test them for the coming weeks.
Been playing a BWR deck for a few weeks now and I was curious as to what everyone's opinion has been in regards to finishers? For a young pyro/Lingering souls deck is Butcher the way to go? I have been running 2 Anglers and a Blood baron recently but they seem to be very lackluster and I am trying to figure out what exactly I should replace them with. I was looking at Falkenrath Aristocrat and possibly a Thundermaw or Stormbreath but I am not sure if they will be any better. Is Falkenrath Aristocrat worth it if the only human in the deck is YP (and should it be a 2 of or a single copy)? Recently ran this and 24 lands at a PPTQ and realized 24 is far to many lands, I will be cutting down to 23 and adding an additional fulminator mage but am feeling really unsure about the finishers. Hero has been pretty great so far but I do not think it should be more than a 1-of.
So it appears that I will be attending another legacy event in a few weeks where a large portion of the local meta is Omni-tell variants. Any tips you guys have for the match up? it isn't one I have too much experience in (in fact it was my only loss in my last tournament run). Any tips would be appreciated. Do we just bring in every counter as possible and just hope its enough? Am I wrong thinking that our vial/jitte/ X# of adepts should be taken out for sideboard counters?
Also, how is Harbinger going for everyone? It seems lack luster to me in main unless there is a large fair deck meta (maybe hes a sideboard card?).
Did you like 3 chalice or do you think you'd play 4?
I think 3 was the right number, I almost always had access to it when I need it but anytime I drew a second I was not a happy camper. Having the 4th in the side is definitely worth it against things like storm.
To be honest, the dazes where a little weird so I'm not exactly sure how I felt about them. They almost never mattered because I never drew them during the combo match ups which upset me . During the RUG Delver matchup game 1, I dazed his turn one delver only to be dazed back and that eventually lead to me losing that game. Honestly, that was my mistake for getting greedy. I am more than sure that the threat of them made a difference against many decks though but its hard to quantify.
The chalices however did work. Against storm game 1 I managed to turn 1 vial, turn 2 chalice on x=1 and he just scooped during his draw step. They worked great at stalling reanimator so I could beat down and they forced Miracles/BUG to remove it. I expected lots of blue and the mainboard chalices did a great job at catching them by surprise when you played vial or cursecatcher turn 1. I think the advantage you get from having them in game 1 outways any drawback personally.
Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time poster and I have some good news! As a relatively new player to legacy the discussions in this thread have helped me immensely with the deck and I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.
After playing around with the deck for a couple months and really only playing in one tournament before with the deck (GP NJ), I decided to sleeve up merfolk and hit a tourney close by for the chance to win some dual lands(1-8 got some multiple of duals). The tournament ended up being 91 players total and I am happy to prove that merfolk is not dead by any means. I managed to get into top 8 as the first seed going 6-1 and even though I lost in top 8 I managed to walk away in 5th place and the new proud owner of 2 revised Savannahs (my first duals!). I faced a variety of decks to get there: BUG Delver, Reanimator, Storm, Omnti(lost), some kind of affinity brew, miracles and RUG Delver. Again I want to say thank you! I am glad I got to make a splash with merfolk and making the unbelievers cry.
In case anyone was wondering, here is what I was running:
Currently coming up with this decklist for my next FNM. It is my first FNM, I am usually a Draft player since I can never commit to a deck with the millions of ideas in my head. I wont pretend to say this is my original idea. It is an alteration to Paul Brown's Naya Humans. The only thing I would need to actually invest in would be some of the lands and the 2 caverns (which im skeptical about)
I was thinking of adding in some Ghor-Clan Rampager But I cannot seem to find where they would fit in. Also I was really looking for a spot for 1 Hellrider, maybe reduce Huntmaster of the Fells to 2 and add 1 hellrider?
Since I have not played FNM before I am really afraid of the mid game oriented decks, as I feel like any kind of board removal would just wipe me out even though I have the boros charm.
I would love to hear any thoughts on the deck. My sideboard isnt quite set up, love recommendations as I am not as experienced in FNM. Maybe a Nearheath Pilgrim to replace lightning mauler when I need the lifesteal or a Thalia in that spot vs control.
