  • posted a message on Triple onslaught draft
My local game store's owner just acquired some onslaught boxes and he'll fire off an onslaught draft this week. is there anyone here that played limited during onslaught era and can give me some advices ? Such as better colors to draft , better tribes, better strategy (aggro or control and speed of the format in general) , bombs (not the obvious ones like giant legendary creatures, but very good cards that may look poor at first glance.)
I'll be happy to hear any suggestion because you know, if i win i will get to open other onslaught boosters , and fetches are good Smile

I just hope there are goblins in Red. Not necessarily as a main tribe, but goblins would fit well inside a plane at war. And recently they haven't been printing a lot of goblins.

I agree with blibplob, shared animosity is not needed and in my experience we just need more creatures/burn in order to win. I don't think you should run the eidolon though, just swap animosity for lords (goblin king, mad auntie, goblin wardriver) or other goblins/burn spells.

  • posted a message on Triple journey to nyx draft --- best /worst color
In the end i won the draft with a R/W aggro deck. I wanted to avoid red and possibly play u/w fliers. I opened first pack Iroas and i picked it for value, then proceeded picking some white and blue cards... but when a Harness by force was passed to me i decided to go all in on R/W aggro.
In the end the deck was not very good and i saw a lot of blue good cards passing.... but it was very fast (3 satyr hoplite, lot of 2 drops especially sigiled skinks, and a good amount of combat tricks) and opponents were almost always too slow to beat me. When they managed to stabilize, i just had to wait and topdeck iroas or harness by force for the win XD

Despite the result i still feel that red is not so good in this format..... but i will not try to actively avoid it next time if i open a red bomb

I know that triple journey to nyx is probably garbage as a draft format, but my local store is going to do one because people want to open new boosters.

I am not experienced with journey to nyx since i couldn't attend the prerelease, so i'd like some suggestions. Which color do you think is the best and wich you would absolutely avoid playing ?

The new spoiled Eidolon of the Great Revel seems like a no-brainer in this deck. Just find what to cut for him.

Besides, no one mentioned War Elemental . It seems to me that it could replace ydwen efreet, or you could run both. Elemental provides three devotion, grows very easily out of control in this deck and, if purphoros is out, i think that it enters the battlefield immediately as a 3/3. You cast the elemental, put his sacrifice etb trigger on the stack first, then put purphoros damage on the stack. Damage resolves, elemental gets 2 counters, then the sacrifice effect fizzles because damage was already dealt to the opponent.

My advise would be: cut shared animosity, cut krenko.
I think shared animosity is a trap card; it forces to run a lot of tokens effect that are not so great, it is a dead topdeck if you have 1-2 goblins on the field (even if you have 3 a lord would probably be better).... it is the kind of card that make you win more when you are already winning. Well, the card has some merits, because it helps breaking board stalls that sometimes happen against other aggro - midrange decks, but i don't think this happens often enough to justify running it. If you really want it, 4 seems definitely too much.
Krenko in a 20 land deck is difficult to play.... it is reasonable to want a powerful curve-topper, but in my opinion there will be a lot more times when you wish krenko was a cheaper goblin to cast, than times when krenko comes in and wins the game by its own.
If you fear countermagic, play some number of cavern of souls... cutting shared animosity and krenko's command will maximize the sinergy with this land.
If you fear board sweepers....well, little can be done. 4 mana wraths can be raced reasonably, but if a lot of your opponents play turn 3 anger of the gods or turn 2 pyroclasm, then you are in trouble. this is inevitable.

I don't want to dismiss your decklist ,i just say that mine (the post before yours), it is geared towards maximizing consistency, that is what a beatdown deck like this needs. You have no library manipulation, so you need consistency. If you have reasonable draws, you'll have no problems in killing the opponent between turn 4-6.

Well, it's the all-in nature of this kind of deck that sometimes can make you lose badly (at least if you are playing the full aggro version which i believe is best).
Last tournament i placed 3rd out of 20 people, sometimes i get destroyed instead, but the deck is fun to play and is a blast when it works properly.

By the way , i think that the black splash should be seriously considered for the aggro version. Spike Jester has worked wonders for me, and rakdos charm is one of the best sideboard cards you can have in modern (good against affinity/annoying artifacts, good versus graveyard decks, good against splinter twin, and still a reasonable burn spell if you need to finish the opponent). Sometimes i think that i should play charm main deck, but i'm discouraged to do so because goblin sligh works like a combo deck... you need 2-3 lands, a lot of creatures, lords and burn to finish the opponent. If too much of this components miss in the early game you don't have ways to recover, so playing rakdos charm main deck would be risky. Also consider the fact that with this deck, the less you sideboard the better is... you don't want to dilute your early power.
I also play thoughtseize in the board (why not? very good against both combo and control); and i advise the black splash also because the manabase is essentially like a mono colored one.... you get to play auntie's hovel and blackleave cliffs that really have no drawbacks for us, and cavern of souls also produce black for spike jester.... just add to this 3-4 fetchlands and a couple of blood crypts and you're ok. This is my current list for reference:

    -4 goblin guide
    -4 foundry street denizen
    -3 legion loyalist
    -2 mogg fanatic
    -4 mogg war marshal
    -4 goblin bushwhacker
    -4 spike jester
    -1 goblin wardriver
    -4 goblin chieftain
    -1 goblin king
    -4 lightning bolt
    -4 gobllin grenade

    -4 auntie's hovel
    -4 blackleave cliffs
    -3 cavern of souls
    -2 mutavault
    -3 fetchlands
    -2 blood crypt
    -3 mountain.

    Sideboard :
    -4 rakdos charm
    -2 combust
    -3 thoughtseize
    -2 shattering spree
    -2 shatterstorm
    -1 blood moon
    -1 molten rain

The only flexible spots for me in the main deck are the 2 mogg fanatics, the wardriver and the goblin king.... those could be anything between the 4th legion loyalist, goblin arsonist, frenzied goblin, tattermunge maniac, ember hauler, krenko's command, dragon fodder, mad auntie. I don't like shared animosity because it commits you to playing too much tokens effects ( you don't want to have few creatures on board and draw the enchantment... with all the removal spells in modern you just want more creatures).

The 2 mutavaults are debatable... sometimes i need 2 colored mana and i have mutavault, but in the end i feel is worth the risk to mitigate a bit flooding. 21 lands is just right , since our best lord is a three-drop and this deck have difficultis if it can't cast lords.

Regarding sideboard, it is geared towards my meta that is heavy on twin and affinity. Affinity in particular is the matchup that I struggle with most than any other... i hate those ******* robots, i hate vault skirges with cranial plating XD

Anyway , let's hope for wizard to print some other good goblins in the near future .... it is a shame that in the whole lorwyn block there is no very good black goblin to play XD

So how the banning of deathrite shaman affects this deck?
It is still safe to play three colours without the mana fixing provided by shaman?
It is ok to run black anyway just for bump in the night ?
Will the fact that other decks now have one less lifegain tool improve our deck?
Will now hellspark elemental, keldon marauders, vexing devil become better choices ?

I never faced tron, but i faced posts a lot of times when it was legal and the matchup was 50/50 . And i suppose posts was a better deck than tron.

MBC was traditionally a good matchup for goblins, but yeah now that they run the witches and gary things may have changed. Still, i bet you can overrun them before they stabilize.

I don't want to talk like goblins is the best deck in the world, but i think it is severely underplayed for the potential it has.
