Hello Everyone!
I'm new to the thread, but have been reading it for about 2 weeks or so. I really like the "idea" of Sultai control deck. Was a big fan of it back in standard when I could play it.
I'm hoping you might be able to help me put together a deck for this coming Monday at my local game store.
I have all the cards for it "mostly"... I only have 1 Tarmogoyf so I need to make up 3 slots. I know there is no real replacement for Tarmogoyf but if you was in my spot. What would you use as a replacement? Thoughts on using a one of Courser of Kruphix in the deck? Maybe add more spells?
Ok! Well I've made it to my very first modern event! And well... didn't go so well. I took this list there, pretty much the same as Todd Stevens' list
Dont get down about it. When I first started playing Modern (about a year ago) I lost ALOT! But I started learning the format and watched alot of the Modern coverage from SCG and the GP's and learned much about how all the different decks play. And I have started winning alot more.
Looks like Todd Stevens took down the Modern Classic at the open yesterday with his "Sun & Moon"
I really like where this desk is at right now in the Meta.
Hey MrDude! Your list is very similar to the one I'm currently running. But one question: how did you like having Ajani Vengeant in the deck? I've been running 2 additional Gideon Jura with no Ajani. Gideon feels like an all star to me since he can draw fire from me or my other walkers if I get him out and although he's usually not as game ending on his own with no ultimate, his utility is undeniable
I thought Ajani Vengeant was awesome. He is another Lightning Helix and he draws out cards from there hand to deal with him or takes a hit from there attacking creatures. And in some cases in Infect, I can tap down an attacker or Inkmoth if they hit me already. He seemed to work great for me.
I only have 1 Gideon Jura and didn't play him alot. He came down a turn late for me. Or when he did get on the board he didn't seem to help me control the match up. He was just kind of there, and I didn't like him. Maybe that's because I only play one of him in' the main and didn't see him around much. But as of right now I didn't like him.
What do you think about Chandra ?
I played a similar deck with elspeth and Gideon instead of her. I hesitated to play her because of Emrakul ...
I was thinking to put 2 Chandra in side to play her in game 2 and 3 if i feel that my opponent put in some Emrakul / gravehate.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance Another great card. She was able to protect herself from threats, and get me card advantage. One time I turned over Emrakul to the +1, but I still won the game with everything else the deck was doing, it was not a big deal.
She can draw you a card, give you mana ramp if you need it, Kill a creature off the board. Shes great! I might try and put a 3rd one in place of the Gideon Jura.
Hello all, First time posting in this thread.
I have not seen anyone talk about the new Black/Red ver. of Reanimator that seems to have become popular. Wanted to get other peoples thoughts on it, as I can build it and I only need to get the Badlands for it.
Wondering if this is the correct thread for it or if it is going in another one (I didn't find it if there is one.)
Hello everyone! First time posting in this thread but have been trying to get this deck to work for me since before Eldritch Moon came out. I could not seem to get it to work for me and lost with it alot so I gave up on it. But I have been reading everyone's post and keeping up on this deck.
Since then, the deck has got Blessed Alliance & Chandra, Torch of Defiance.
I thought I would build it back up and take it to my local Modern Monday event yesterday, The store had a good size turn out, (50 people) 5 rounds and I went 4-1.
Round 1: Jund WIN
Game 1 He was able to make me discard on first turne and just kind of ran away with the game from there. He had all the good stuff!
Game 2 & 3 After sideboard I was able to bring in hate. He knew I had BloodMoons from game one, and I sided them out, that was a good call because he just started playing around it. But my sideboard came in good and was able to control him out and win the games. Leyline of Sanctity was awesome he was not able to early turns Thoughtsize me or if I got low burn me out with Lightning Bolt. (I found out later at one point he was holding 3 Lightning Bolt's.)
Game 3 I was able to use Ajani Vengeant -7 2 times! He was kind of tilted on that one.
Round 2: Bant Spirits WIN
Game 1 Very odd deck, once again the player had all the answers for me game one and countered my stuff and he took it away.
Game 2 & 3: Not much sideboard stuff came in just more creature removal, and that seemed to do the trick! Even if he Spell Queller my good stuff I was able to kill it another way and get back my spells.
Round 3: GW Hexproff (Bogle's) WIN
Game 1 The player could not seem to get anything really going. And I was able to Anger of the Gods or Wrath of God things way.
Game 2 Took out spot removal and brought in the MVP Blessed Alliance, same song 2nd verse, he didn't really stand a chance.
Round 4: Storm LOSS
Game 1 Player was able to go off on Turn 3, and he Grapeshot me for 20. Not much to talk about.
Game 2 Let me tell you a story. I had Leyline of Sanctity, Chalice of the Void, and Rest in Peace OPENING HAND! It was glorious! Played the Leyline at the start, was able to first turn a Chalice for 1, then 2nd turn Rest in Peace. His next turn, he combo'ed off to make 17 1/1 Goblins! I did not draw a board sweeper! And he won. WTF?! And that's Magic people, sometimes its better to be lucky then good. lol
Round 5: Dredge WIN
Game 1 I played well and it came down to the player only having 4 cards left in his deck, but he edged it out.
Game 2 & 3 Sideboard cards are good. Anger of the Gods is a MVP for this. Was able to get the answers from him. The player to concede both games 2 & 3.
This is a very brief layout of what all happened. Was a good night. I welcome all constructive feedback and thoughts.
Been thinking this morning about some wild ideas for a better counter spell to replace Mana Leak.
What are peoples thoughts on the following: Syncopate We all know it, and it exiles the card so they have no way to bring it back. Condescend Like Syncopate but we get to Scry 2 instead exiling the spell. Delay I dont know that I like this one, because they will get to cast the spell in 3 turns. Deprive I think I like the idea of this one, early game it puts us a turn behind on land, but it truly counters the spell. Late game it's not that big of a deal to return a land, and again it truly counters any spell. Hindering Light Now I think this is a interesting pick. We could counter any black deck trying to make us discard a spell, and we get to draw off of it instead. Or any type of red based deck trying to burn us, stop the burn and draw off of it. Render Silent This one is a little expensive but if it is late game, once we counter it they don't get to do anything else for the turn.
Hello all, I have not commented in this group before, but I have been creeping and reading, I built this deck and took it to my local tournament and went 4-0. I wanted to post my deck and talk a little about my matches and some thoughts. Also, get some constructive criticism and feedback.
Round 1 -Some weird Esper Control Goryo's Vengeance deck.
Never seen it before.
He got a creature in play once and I had Blessed Alliance the next time he tried it I was able to Cryptic Command
Used Dragonlord Ojutai finish off the game.
Not a lot to say, I out controlled him and went 2-0 ver. him.
Round 2 - JUND
Game 1: Was bad, I lost, he was able to pick apart my hand with spot discard spells then use Lilly to make sure I never had a card to really use.
Game 2&3: I was able to get Leyline of Sanctity in my opening had both times. Once that was on the board he could not target me anymore with discard spells or lighting bolt. I had all the removal for his creatures after that and just had to wait. until I was in a good spot and then let good old Dragonlord Ojutai finish the game.
Round 3 - BANT Eldrazi
Game 1: He was able to run over me early and I could not catch up.
Game 2&3: I think he kept bad hands honestly. He kept 2 land hands that he was not able to ramp into his big dudes, I had all the spot removal for them or Supreme Verdict to remove more then one. Once again Dragonlord Ojutai took the game home, he tried to remove it once with a Path to exile but I was able to flash in Restoration Angel and bring it back home safely.
Round 4 - Infect
Game 1 & 2: Once again had good removal through the game. MVP for this game was Ghost Quarter and Blessed Alliance if he tried to activate the infect land I just Quartered it in response, and the times he did attack I had Blessed Alliance.
I think he had lethal 4 times and was able to answer it each time in some way.
I think I am sounding repetitive but... Once again Dragonlord Ojutai took the game home!
My Random Thoughts: Dragonlord Ojutai & Blessed Alliance Was the MVP cards of the night. I am going to find a way to work more Blessed Alliance into the deck.
My Plainswalkers was not that great. I think I used them both once and could have taken them or left them. Was not that big of a deal.
I think 3x Cryptic Command feels like the right number.
Used Logic Knot twice and it was awesome both times. But I don't think I want more then 1 in the deck. Mana Leak was some times good early, but then sucked late game. I want a different card in its spot, but not sure what card to use.
Any way its late now here and I am going to bed. Thanks to everyone for there info in the threads that I read before I built the deck, and thanks in advance, for the thoughts and ideas now!
Thank you king for your reply DubiousKing. It seems you have put a lot of testing into the deck.
After playing around with Incendiary Flow I think I agree that Harnessed Lightning will be better. Also some how I totally forgot about Goblin Dark-Dwellers! Those guys are nuts in a control deck.
I'm at work reading this lol. I am going to read some more and think about it and see if maybe I can tweek my deck a little bit.
Pre-rotation I loved Black/White Control, after the last rotation I have been trying to find a way to play it still. But with the loss of Languish it has been hard to find a good cheaper board sweeper. This is where Radiant Flames comes in!
Not only do we get a a cheap board sweeper but we get access to Incendiary Flow to pick off other creatures and also deal direct damage to the player.
We lost Read the Bones but since we are in 3 colors now we can use Painful Truths and draw 3 cards, and as we have seen in the past drawing 3 cards can swing a game BIG time.
Below is a list I have put together in a hopes of starting talks about a new deck type that could be competitive against the new U/W Flash, B/G Delirium, and R/W Vehicles decks.
Was wanting to play this now that top is banned.
Right now my deck looks like this. I have not made a side board yet trying to get the main deck ready.
1 Courser of Kruphix
2 Tasigur, the Golden Fang
3 Snapcaster Mage
2 Scavenging Ooze
2 Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
2 Liliana, the Last Hope (This could also be Liliana of the veil)
4 Abrupt Decay
2 Dismember
1 Go for the Throat
1 Doom Blade
1 Mana Leak
2 Damnation
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Thoughtseize
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Serum Visions
2 Creeping Tar pit
2 Blooming Marsh
2 Darkslick Shores
2 Forest
2 Swamp
2 Island
4 Polluted Delta
2 Verdant Catacombs
1 Misty Rainforest
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Watery Grave
1 Breeding Pool

Also seen that Todd Stevens wrote a really good sideboard article this week. Thought it was interesting to see what he take out/puts in on some match ups.

Silumgar's Scorn Okay this is where I think I go off the rails and am brewing a little hard. What if we up the count of Dragons we have in the deck? Add in more Dragonlord Ojutai and maybe Dragons like, Icefall Regent, Keiga, the tide Star, or Yosei, the Morning Star.
If I could find room for like 8 Dragons, Silumgar's Scorn becomes a really good true counter spell.
Anyways, thanks for all your ideas and constructive feedback.
