This is all they say about it in the Comprehensive Rules:

104.3j In a Commander game, a player that’s been dealt 21 or more combat damage by the same
commander over the course of the game loses the game.

903.3. Each deck has a legendary creature card designated as its commander. This designation is not a
characteristic of the object represented by the card; rather, it is an attribute of the card itself. The
card retains this designation even when it changes zones.

There is no more definition of the commander attribute and it is not a characteristic of an object or the status of a permanent. It says that a player loses the games when 21 combat damage has been dealt to him or her by a single commander. It doesn't say that a player knows how much commander damage he has received or which of the creature that has dealt him damage is a commander.

Matt comment was said before the new Comprehensive Rules were published and seemed more like an assumption than a rule explanation.

If you interpret rule 903.3 as meaning that you always know that a card is a commander, this would mean that you always know which hidden card is the commander in a hidden zone. This also brings logistical problems in randomizing a deck containing a commander that must also be known.

What happens in the Commander format if the commander is manifested?

When combat damage is dealt to an opponent, you need to announce that Facedown Creature X is your commander. The identity of which face down creature is your commander is then known to all player. You cannot hide that fact.

Are you sure about this? I didn't see anything to this effect in the Comprehensive Rules. Do you have the rule number that states this?

In most places if its on purpose to just look through the cards it will be a game loss or a very stern warning.

Looking at Extra Cards is never a Game Loss (well, unless it's the third time in that competetive REL tournament on that day).

If cheating is involved, the judge has to investigate and then the penalty would be a disqualification.

This could easily be Unsporting Conduct - Cheating. I don't know what is the standard of proof on it but looking at your whole library during your opponent's turn is the less sophisticated card manipulation used by cheaters.

It also has recently seen play in Vintage Super League. Could have led a few more people to buy it or to keep it.

Block is almost dead in paper. It might be region dependent but I'm under the impression that even Vintage is more played than Block nowadays.

  • posted a message on Why do People so Rarely Call Out Overly-Protective Parents For their Behavior?
One problem is the word overprotective which means to be too much protecting. Too much of anything is always bad. Parents being overprotective always has a negative connotation but what does it really means to be overprotective? There's no definite answer, everyone will have different opinions and there's different level of overprotecting. A parent can be slightly overprotecting where there's only benign consequences for the children. No one will tell a parent they're doing it wrong except in a more casual tone between friends or family as a suggestion and not as a reproach. If the parent is overprotecting a lot by significanty hurting the well-being of the children person will act and in extreme could be considered abuse and social welfare could be involved. If a parent prevents his child from going to school, you can be sure that some people will get involved. I think people do call out to overprotective parents but not to stranger and not publicly.

You can't base your opinions on a comedy show. Of course character behaviour will be weird and dissimilar to real life, all the characters are made up to be funny and larger than life. Even in drama, most characters act in unrealistic fashion. People like to be amused by things. Do you think people love Breaking Bad because they'd love to be Criminal Mastermind? No, they just like to know what would happen if they were making a ton of stupid decisions and unlikely scenarios.

You're 27 but how old is the girl you spoke of? I don't know where you're from but if you mean she's at the age of sexual consent I could see why the parents could see you badly. Even if the state says that a woman can decide who she has sex with or is romantically invested with as soon as she is 13, 14, 16, 18 or 21, it doesn't mean that the girl will make the right decisions. The role of a parent is, among other things, to help, advise and protect his children. It's normal for a parent to be interested in their kids romantic relationships because they want happiness for their children. Do your really think that major kids of 14, 16, 18 or 21 years old are really ready to fend for themselves alone in the world? Everyone need help, advices and support no matter how old you are. Barely major adults without any family, state or other form of support often are disadvantaged compared to other young adults. Children tends to depend on their parents for many years after majority.

Let's assume you have a daughter. What would you think if she was dating a racist, a bum or anyone you think would not make her happy? What would you think of the boy that tell you you're overprotective of your daughter, that you're creepy and that you secretly wish to have an incestuous relationship? I highly doubt you'll see him as a good suitor for your daughter.

It seems to me there's some misunderstandings about card condition ratings.

    Clouding is still SP.

    http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/cardconditions

    Pic

From what I can see the blue of the water is still blue and the color of the trees on the island is a very dark green.

No creases, no major surface damage. Somebody would be well within their rights to sell that as SP according to the SCG condition guide.

Did you even read the guide you link to? Any whitening makes a card MP. The concept of clouding applies only to foil. While they do allow for some creasing and water damage at MP, it's only really minor defects and most creasing and defects would be considered HP.

That looks SP to me. No creases, no damage. Cracking deal.

This is definitely not SP. I know that everyone has its own condition standards but this card has corner wear, ton of whitening. This could be called MP by stretching the definition but any store or traders giving this as a SP card would get a complaint. A card with creases and damage would definitely be HP or Poor.

I think it comes down to your personal preference and what you think your deck needs. If there was a clear answer everyone would be running it and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

With all respect, I disagree that it is a matter of preference. You are right that each of the options has ups and downs. But that fact doesn't mean the best choice is a matter of opinion. It does mean that finding the strategic choice will be difficult. As other people have brought up, some Tinker targets will be better against certain decks.

To contribute, I think we should also consider our deck's weaknesses. If we have a huge problem with delver then Sphinx of the Steel is likely the best choice as they probably can only get us with Hurkyll's Recall type effects since Timewalk is unlikely to be able to overpower the lifelink ability. Look at the outs the deck you are trying to improve your matchup against. See what outs they are likely to have and plan according to those outs.

Steel Sabotage and Fire//Ice can let you beat the Sphinx.

I don't know what happens with this forum, but when some old card price goes up, it's always Star City Games' (or "speculators") fault...

What you say only may make sense when the demand is inelastic, which isn't the case. That would only make some sense for high grade copies.

I'm saying what was said about GP NJ, in that SCG was the main force behind buying up copies, and they have almost doubled their buylist price since then. Now, you could say that is just SCG reacting to the market, but I find it odd that the demand for p9 literally doubled overnight by itself.

I think demand did go up a bit naturally, due to the nature of a large legacy event, but SCG saw this and is 'speculating' (rightfully so) that it will continue to go up. So, they are using their larger buying power to take advantage of it and push it along more then it naturally would have done.

Also, not sure what you mean by demand being inelastic. There's a certain amount of demand, that is slowly rising as more players start to hit ages where they have enough disposable income to afford pieces, and the supply is small enough that it is actually feasible for a large organization to 'corner' the market. If they just buy up 5% of the P9 ever printed, that's actually a huge amount relative to the available copies for sale. There's many that have been destroyed over time, or are in collections that will never be broken up.

Or, just think of it this way. If SCG is offering 5k for an unlimited lotus, why would anyone sell theirs for 3-4k on tcgplayer/ebay/etc.. ? It will immediately cause an increase in price even for the 3rd party sellers, and if you want to buy one, you've got to beat that price or buy from SCG. No matter what, they can set a new bottom level price for them.

5% of all power is around a 1000 playset. If they pay $5000 per set it would be million dollar but you'll never be able to get it for so cheap. Trying to buy so much will cause prices to increase by a lot. I should be noted that such practices are rarely worth it for the instigator.

If there is actual shady activity going on, and you can prove it, by all means report this store to Wizards. You can contact your Regional Coordinator or Wizards Customer Support and report the judge and store. http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Events.aspx?x=judge/resources/coords http://company.wizards.com/contact-us

In regards to the "always pairing the same people" issue, when I ran FNM at my store, for a good year, there was a husband and wife that would show up. With maybe one or two exceptions, they would ALWAYS be paired against each other at some point during FNM, though not always the same round.

Good players tend to often be paired against each other in the top of the standings while bad players tend to be paired against each others in the bottom of the standings. This effect is most pronounced for bad players since it is way easier to lose 90% of matches than to win 90% of matches.

Re-backed is different than printed over and possibly harder to notices. It is the front and the back of two cards glued together. Only seen for Alpha/Beta cards.
