The 60 looks solid. Unless I have the card somewhere in my main as well, I don't like only have only 2x/1x of cards in my sideboard. This is super true of cards that can be an instant wins (like stony against affinity). Is drown in sorrow a Damnation stand in? What's it trying to hit? Do you know what you're likely to play against?

I'd drop Sin Collector, Mirran Crusader, move Zealous Persecution to the main (replace a kill spell of your choice). That gives you room to get some of those sideboard options to 3x.

This deck did well in yesterday's dailies. Here are a couple of different takes on it.

This is a combo deck. The traditional tokens + anthems synergy/combo is one path to victory (note the excessive amount of token spells and anthems); the other is getting Emrakul, the Aeons Torn into play via Polymorphon a token or Windbrisk Heights (casting Emrakul via Heights gives you an extra turn, in case you're unsure). Note that Emrakul's getting onto the board as soon as turn 3 thanks to the Springleaf Drums so you can Polymorph a turn early. SHEENID255 opted to play no hand-disruption and is splashing black exclusively to flashback Lingering Souls (in my own Esper build, I've found that the black mana on turn 1 is awkward, so I don't think it's the worst decision). One last note about the main deck: no Spectral Procession. This is a concession to the mana base, I'm sure. I don't think much of the sideboard. Pulse of the Fields is interesting, but I think Auriok Champion is a million times better in this deck for that purpose (you don't really need to combo off with Emrakul vs burn, but I might keep in a couple copies of Polymorph as redundancy to get the champion into play).

This list is much more traditional, with 4 main-deck Auriok Champions and 2 sideboard Kor Firewalkers to shore up the burn and Delver match-ups. Also of note is the 4 main-deck Zealous Persecutions, which are strong against Young Pyromancer decks and Birds of Paradise/Noble Hierarch decks. I'm not sure it has enough turn 1 and 2 plays for my liking.

My own (Esper) build, which I'll post next week probably (after I've had some more practice and time to tinker with the different options), is more controlling; Remand is excellent against Treasure Cruise/Dig Through Time and Geist of Saint Traft is insane in most match-ups.

EDIT: Elaborated on my analysis of the first list.
The Polymorph combo pops up every few months. It's inconsistent, and never posts regular results. That strategy is off topic for this thread.

As for the other deck, 4 Brimaz is silly (being a legend), and what's up with that sideboard? Disfigure, Duress, and Kor Firewalker seem redundant. I still advocate RiP over Relic of Progenitus, and 4 Stony Silence is over kill. Might have gone 4-0 with a better side, lol.

I like that combo build at looks fun to play. Im going to test out my esper today some more. The problem with remand is it feels awkward to cast.
Im putting 2 dig through times and going to test that out for some card draw.
I wish i had emrakuls!!! Sucks being a new player. Combo turn 3 or turn 4 under windbrisk looks fun and will suprise my meta.
Remand is very much a tempo card. It delays your opponent, and gives you a card. It can be pseudo Time Walk when used properly. As such, it's used by decks that have instant win combos (Gifts Tron, Twin, Scapeshift), and really just need time, or to protect the combo from 1 spell. It's not really a good tool for our deck.

    Hi guys,
I've been developing my modern event deck and I've been following this topic quietly for a while. Thanks for all the input and tournament results! Today I stumbled upon Flagstones of Trokair.
Flagstones is only practical as a budget fetchland, and even so I would just save up for the real thing (unless you just got flagstones laying around).

Esper or Mardu tokens is really intriguing me. I have some thoughts and concerns, but note that I haven't played it and am of the opinion that if you want to compete in MTGO modern, you must have favorable match-ups against burn and delver.

I'm definitely behind the times on Burn and Delver. If anyone has match advice, I'd be happy to put it in the primer. In general, PM me that kinda stuff so it doesn't clog up the thread. I think Bojuka Bog could replace a swamp or two. It would create a nice surprise against goyf/scooze, and can slow down treasure cruise.

I like the three color discussion. I personally think the Esper path has more promise over Mardu. My gripe with adding red is that it doesn't fix our primary problem, which is running out of gas, and relying on top decking. Adding blue brings in Treasure Cruise, which we can drop turn 5+ or off a windbrisk for late game gas. I would like to try:

With access to three colors, I'd definitely main engineered explosives. I also don't like raise the alarm, but I would try it first, as it's another cheap instant that can get tossed in the bin.

On a side note, decks like this that have been solid in color identity for awhile saying, "let's splash blue for treasure cruise" is exactly what'll get the card banned, lol

If running out of gas is a problem we could run Phyrexian Arena. I don't think running out of gas is our primary problem. I've found our primary problem to be burn, which is a large portion of the meta right now. When it comes to the Esper variant has anyone considered Esper Charm. It seems like all three modes would be relevant with a blue splash and I like it a lot better then Thoughtseize in the burn matchup. Might be worth considering.

Saying, "X deck is our biggest problem" is cyclical with the meta. Last year, everyone was saying "Affinity is our biggest problem" because it was a large portion of the field. Burn is a good deck, and it's everywhere, so yeah, it's a problem. I recommend Layline of Sanctity in the side, and Timely Reinforcements in the main because of it. Still, the biggest problem with BW Tokens for years has been that we're a fair deck, with no draw/cantrip/search mechanic.

I think Esper Charm competes with our 3cmc token/creature spell. On paper, I'd go for Azorius Charm. All 3 modes looks pretty useful.

Hi there! I must say I love this thread--Has become my haven ever since I decided to play wb tokens! Have been checking almost all of the comments and discussions, and finally decided to post as well. The reason for that is that I'm willing to take tokens with me to the upcoming PPTQ, so I wanted to share my list with you guys and see what you think:

So actually my main problem is in the sideboard. I reaaally don't know what the meta is where I'm playing the PPTQ--Since it's in another city, I really can't know. I've been told there's tokens and some jund, but it's pretty diverse. So I tried to add a little of everything. The Mirran Crusaders are mostly there in place of Auriok Champions, and the Surgical Extractions should actually be Extirpates. Will try to get those, though I'm still considering whether those are necessary? And I -don't- have 3 Leylines at the moment, but planning to get them before the event, if lucky. I also considered Kor Firewalker if I don't get the champions, since burn freaks the hell outta me.

And when it comes to main. To be honest, I'm still making changes as I go. I recently took out a 4th Heights and put a plains in its place, because I found that sometimes I'd rather that coloured land didn't enter tapped. Also, considering taking out one land and put a third Zealous. I don't think I ever had much problem with the manabase--At least, I don't particularly remember getting flooded, or mana scarce. But still, I think at some times later in the game I topdecked a land many times, so I decided I might have to take one land. Not really sure yet though.

On, and about the Sorins discussion. I honestly haven't tried Solemn Visitor yet, but ever since he was spoiled I always saw Lord of Innistrad in a better light. Guess I rather having more token vamps and (luckily) infinite anthems, but--I hadn't taken into account the lifelink part of Solemn Visitor. I like the fact that it works better with Burn, but sadly right now he's too out of my budget so I think I'll keep LoI for the time being until I get the Leylines, and later will maybe consider getting the new Sorin.

Aside from needing 4 Marsh Flats, the land base looks great. I think 24 is good place to be because of the tech edges and vault. I like vault. It rarely does anything, but once in a while it will win games.

If you're worried about burn, I would not run the scullers. 6 discard effects is probably enough. You could add in another inquisition if you really want 7. I would find space in your main for the go for the throats (or whatever kill spell you fancy), probably by removing the 2 scullers. More often than not, targeted kill spells are useful. I'd rather side them out for something else, than the other way around. If you can't get your hands on Solemn Visitor, go for Elspeth Tirel. She really is crazy powerful, and definitely better than Sorin:LoI. Finally, you need Spectral Procession number 4. I too like Brimaz, so maybe drop 1 raise the alarm.

On the subject of sideboard, I'm not an extirpate/extraction fan, but some people swear by them. It's tough to guess what you're going into. Burn is cheap and popular, so that's pretty likely, as is Afinity. If you do well, you'll probably see an expensive top tier deck. I'd bet on Jund, Pod, UWR Control, or all three. I'd do this:
    DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards

This should help you against everything but Jund but I think your main is good against them already. It also only gives you RiP against storm and living end. If that's a concern, I would cut Liliana, then 1 RiP, then 1 Stoney if you want to make room. Also, not to make you more unsure, but this also leaves you open to Amulet of Vigor, Combo Elves, and a few other fringe decks. At a large event, I wouldn't worry about them.

It's really about practice practice practice from here. The deck is solid. Make sure you read up on the match-up section, and read the primers for the other big decks. It super sucks to loose to a Pod deck because both you and your opponent didn't remember the "activate only as a sorcery" clause on Birthing Pod.

How do you guys handle LotV or other planeswalkers? I played a junk deck yesterday that beat me by ultimating lily and then goyf beats. He protected his lily with lingers souls.

I haven't played against Junk or Jund or anything similar yet, but from what I've seen in videos LotV doesn't seem much of a threat for the tokens. They normally get to activate it and screw a few of your dudes, but ultimately you can kill her rather easily. Either that, or you can perfectly Thoughtseizeher. And about Goyfs, I think your main strategy is to have dudes to block it since I haven't seen people giving it trample or anything like that, and post sideboard you can add Rest in Peace or Relic of Progenitus to prevent it from getting bigger. I think overall Jund and Junk are not the worst matches for tokens. I'm more concerned about combos, like Tron or Storm--You need to be extra fast and know how to use your hand disruptioners in order to be able to win.

Then again, this is my opinion according to the videos and postcasts I've watched, and some other articles I've read. No personal experience just yet.

I've found that Storm is a very tough matchup for us so I would probably side in some Eidolon Of Rhetoric or Rule Of Law to combat it. I also prefer Relic Of Progenitus over rest in peace since we want to get the full value out of lingering souls.

This gets debated often. Relic of Progenitus can be baited out an played around, while RiP is a brick wall. I strongly encourage RiP as a better option for grave hate. As for Jund, our best card against them is Lingering Souls, as Katria pointed out, and we want to flash it back. Jund is all about efficient trades. Making 4 tokens off a single spell is super back breaking. Check my list in the primer (ignore the side, it's 100% for my local, burn-less meta). You'll notice I run Engineered Explosives. Set at 2, that kills goyf, scooze, and bob.

So... I guess Stoneforge Mystic is Nahiri after she lost her spark. This definitely is a surprise.

I don't think so. Stoneforge is non-legendary. To me, that implies more than one exist, so it's like a rank or a title. Nahiri happens to be one, but it doesn't prove/disprove her planeswalkerness.

Also, I'm over the moon about these decks. I haven't been this excited for a product in years. Solid card choices, and the new stuff is very creative. Let's see some good reprints in the other 4 decks!

Good day, i'm preparing for a Modern tournament at my lgs. I'm considering playing the following deck:

    Some thoughts and explanations:
In my original plan i wanted to play 3 windbrisk heights but i cut 1 cause i't will slow me down.
I also expect to bump into Anger of the Gods so that's the reason i play brave the elements
I'm still considering playing 1 leyline of sanctity maindeck cause burn is a big thing at the moment, but i'm not sure what card the cut.
I wanted to play liliana of the veil main board but 2 planeswalkers main deck i to much i think.
I'm considering getting a Brimaz, King of Oreskos (i dont have 1 now) but before i spend the money does it really makes my deck stronger? If i'll get 1 it will replace 1 mirran crusader.
Cause Windswept Heath is Modern legal now, did anyone consider playing Voice Of Resurgence maaybe with 1 or 2 rancor?

Let me know what your thoughts are about my deck and maybe it helps me having a good tournament.
    Have a nice day!

I don't know how I feel about the archangel of thune. Don't get me wrong, it's crazy powerful when attacking, or with Sorin's tokens, but you only have 1 sorin. I think Elspeth Tirel will have more of an immediate effect on the game in the same 5cmc slot.

Brimaz > Mirran Crusader if you aren't playing tons of Jund. Crusader is sweet against a field of Goyf, Scooze, and Thrun.

Voice of Regurgitation is a great option for a Junk build. It really punishes UWR Midrange and Control. If you have it and windswept, give it a shot.

Is Phyrexian Arena an alternative to Bob? 1 more mana for less life loss and same card advantage, plus its much harder to remove.
It's not ideal. While having a big pile of 3 drops isn't really a problem, it's always advantageous to play on a curve. T1 thoughtsieze, T2 Bob, T3 Souls/Liliana/Brimaz/whatever is what we really want to do. The life loss is probably about the same. Bob can be 0 when you flip a land, but arena can be 1 when you draw a lingering souls. Also, bob requires you to reveal the card. The "harder to remove" is good and bad. Sometimes, you need to not deal damage to yourself. Still, the B difference in cost is very significant.

There are 12 3-drops in Elenar's list, and Pack Rat effectively makes it 16. I'm going to say again that I feel like this deck has too many 3-drops.

That aside, this deck looks pretty interesting. It seems like a good alternative for people who don't want to shell out for Goyfs or just want a competitive black midrange deck that does something different than BGx.

Could you elaborate on what makes a large number of 3 drops bad? The majority of the best BW options are 3 drops (pack rat, Liliana, Brimaz, Lingering souls, fulminator, kitchen finks, phyrexian arena, blade splicer). In a few cases (brimaz and Liliana come to mind) their best attributes are the low 3 cmc. Our 4 cmc and greater threats are limited to Elspeth, sorin, resto angel, hero of bladehold, batterskull, phyrexian obliterator, and baneslayer angel. All of which are powerful, but not the kind of card you run as a 4x (a hand full of batterkulls would not be great, and flipping them off a bob would be even worse). If you mean the curve is too high, we have no choice. Comparing to jund (and including scooz as a 3 drop), they sit at 12. The 4 goyfs make 16. There's no replacement to Goyf (as the $200 price tag indicates), so I feel this deck is as equivalent as it gets.

I think deadguy ale as a name heavily favors the enfranchised players on this site, and doesn't help new players find it on salvation.

Deadguy Ale is also a stoneforge deck, so I don't think a direct port of the name is really appropriate, unlike something like merfolk or jund who's gameplan, recognizability, and play are largely unchanged between the two formats.

Just to be clear, I'll keep BW Midrange in the title and primer, precisely so new players looking for info can find it. There's pretty regular, "so can we call this deck something else" conversation on the tread, I'd like to settle it.

How is Orzhov not an option?

It's no different than calling BGR decks Jund.

No one calls WB decks in Modern Orzhov, just like how it is BG Rock instead of Golgari Rock, GW Hatebears instead of Selesnya Hatebears, and UR Delver instead of Izzet Delver.

I would also like to point out a problem with this thread as a whole. All of the people who want the name to be changed are divided between several names while all of the people who want the name to be the same are voting for one option. This means that Deadguy Ale will win no matter what. There should be a poll to determine whether there should be a new name and if the majority wants a new name, we could have a second poll deciding which one.

I'm not a fan of Orzhov because it's harder to type than BW, and doesn't save any syllables when spoken. I also consider it already cemented in the vernacular BW=Orzhov, so I didn't see much of a reason to make it a separate option. I went ahead and added it now. If you'd like to change your vote, feel free.

To Valanarch's point, I'll keep the poll up for a few more days. Deadguy + BW Midrange (the two current names for the deck) hold 60% of all the votes, so a run off would be pretty meaningless. If the alternative names all together count for 50%+, we can do a runoff.

Nice Primer and all, but does this really belong in the Established section? Established is for developed decks that make up the metagame. This section is also known as Tier 1.5-2, and as far as I know, this deck does not have the results to be in the Established forum.
    Quote from Remba »
Shouldn't this be in MDC? It hasn't put up any major results that I know of.

As for the deck itself, it has way too many 3-drops.

BW Midrange has had a thread in established since the early summer, it just took some time to get a full primer. See deck eligibility criteria here; we're on the list.

The number of 3 drops is fine. We're not the kind of deck that always wants to play a specific card on turn 3, so "competing" for the 3 slot isn't an issue.
Wow. The Seek part is excellent vs Tron. Nice tech and it's certainly quicker than Stain the Mind/Memoricide. I think we should look into Fiendslayer Paladin, too. It can't be Decayed, burned, etc. Definitely a sb consideration.

    Update:

I am currently 14-6 with my version!

    Won vs:
    -UW Tron: 2x
    -Jund: 1x
    -Hatebears: 2x
    -Affinity: 2x
    -Mono Red Burn: 1x
    -Abzan Pod: 1x
    -Junk: 2x
    -UWR Flash: 2x
    -Scapeshift: 1x

    Lost vs:
    -Affinity: 1x
    -Mono Red Burn: 1x
    -Bogles: 1x
    -BW Tokens: 2x
    -UR Twin: 1x

I'm not surprised at your list of lost matches. Bogles, burn, and affinity are tough. BW Tokens is also probably a hair in their favor. It has good game against midrange decks.

I went 2-3-0 with my Mardu list yesterday (it's here in the thread: http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/established-modern/562369-bw-tokens?comment=174)

It was pretty disappointing, because I lost to BG Rock two times in a row although it's our favourite match up Frown

What bothers me the most is the fact that I mostly lost to bad draws. My starting hand often contained only 1 or 2 lands, and I had to mulligan it or didn't hit the 3rd land drop.
I even added the 23rd land but it didn't help.

The first BG Rock list I encountered had 2 Engineered Explosives main, which was also not good for me.
In the 3rd round I had Purphoros out, and I only had to draw one of the 16 token producers in my deck in 5 turns to win the enire match, but THEN I drew only lands...

I think Mardu is too inconsistent right now, because you have horribly bad topdecks sometimes and can't do much about it sice you have no library manipulation whatsoever.
e.g. you topdeck a Pyromancer with an empty board, or a discard spell in the late game. Or an anthem when you have no tokens. the list goes on...

I play 25 lands. 2 of which are Ghost Quarter, so I side them out if I don't need them. I consider 23 a bare minimum, as we're not just slow when stuck at 2 lands, we can't play at all. I tried a junk version, and never had a problem getting the mana, it was just too painful to recover and then push for a win. I definitely think a tri-color is possible.

As for the list you posted, at the time I didn't reply to it. For me, red brings in some sideboard options (wear // tear, slaughter games) but the key card is Young Pyromancer. I'm not a fan of Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix. They're great in a vacuum, but I don't think they help our overall plan. We don't really need them to finish off opponents. Our creatures should get there just fine. For removing creatures, we have hard removal, like path and doomblade. I think another good red addition could be Chandra, Pyromaster. In a deck that plays off the top, she's a free draw. She may come down too late to actually help, not sure.
