Getting to the point where it is very real for a cube to support UB mill as an actual deck.

Mill is a competitive archetype if you want to support it. It has been for a long time. It's just very parasitic and consumes a bunch of slots, so most cube managers decide not to support it. But I guarantee you you could support draft-winning mill decks right now, and this card doesn't have much to do with its viability.

Sure, but I meant we're getting to the point now where if you run a 360 cube that usually hits 8-mans you could support a mill deck in a control shell with like 5 slots (glimpse, mind funeral, this, fractured sanity, and mill jace, maybe archive trap) and then just cards that are also good in other decks - shelldock, snapcaster, loot jace, tutors, etc.

I think the main issue with this card is that 3 vanilla 4/4's for 7 mana isn't even that good of a cube card, even at instant speed, and that's an above average scenario for the card. Like, I'd certainly play a 7 mana instant that made 3 4/4's, but it wouldn't be a top 10 green card or anything.

These cards will be part of future The list sets as well so you can get them from set packs, why would you buy the secret lair then? Also they said that they're directly for commander only.

I mean, why buy any secret lairs?

And all the UB stuff is probably gonna be "for commander" or a standalone product - aiming them at vintage and legacy would be... a questionable decision.

Flusterstorm, shardless agent, and true name nemisis were also "for commander or a stand alone product" lol. And those are just the first 3 that come to mind.

    Interesting update today

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/secret-lair-universes-beyond-update-2021-06-07

So at least for UB secret lairs going forward, they are going to print in-magic universe versions of the cards that will be treated as the same game object. This is great news as it will eliminate the feel bad FOMO of missing the secret lair with unique cards while also letting people get their hands on Magic versions of other IP cards.

Important that they AREN'T doing this for the non-secret lair versions (thus far LOTR and WH40k), but they don't have the limited supply issues that secret lairs do.

I also thought it was just a reprint LOL. Whoops.

I am PSYCHED to have this for UR commander, which can't really deal with enchantments well lol.

As far as cube goes, I have 9 cards that would benefit from this text, although 4 of them can already kill some/all creatures (Rakdos Daretti, Kologhan's Command, Abrade, and Fiery Confluence). That's pretty narrow.

My 2 mana ramp outside signets is Coldsteel Heart, Felwar Stone, Grim Monolith, and Mind Stone. I think the ability to cash in mind stone for a card makes it better, fixing of heart makes it better, and monolith is obviously a whole different animal. However, Felwar Stone is definitely just tap for colorless a fair number of games, so perhaps that swap is worthy of a test.

Cleric better in the average cube IMO. I'd only run this if you wanted a 3rd 2/1 flyer for 2 and already had cleric and spirit or getting 2 artifacts was really relevant for a supported archetype.

I don't even think Sinkhole is that good anymore TBH, so even if this hits literally every land in your cube, it's just fine.

The more I think about this guy the more i like it. If you're holding Recurring Nightmare he is a one-man enabler no matter what the rest of your hand looks like.

Yeah I really like this guy in a recurring nightmare shell too. He's basically a slower survival in that deck. 4 is too much for traditional reanimator, but for grindy GY value decks he might be good enough.

Eh, I think this is just Tombstalker way too much of the time, which isn't great. In order to be better than tombstalker you need to have 3 spells to exile, which means it's only a great early play in the spells matter deck, and that deck has better cards that only fit in it IMO.

Thank god lmao I was honestly pissed

Sorry about that. I should maybe learn how to play this game sometime

They've worded this ability like 16 different ways over the years, and we've learned that unless there's a may you have to do it, so it's easy to misread this one. Why they've forgone may just to save 4 characters in the text box is beyond me.

-MUST find a target; Solitude and even Subtlety avoid self-targeting, Grief and Endurance don't really care, but Fury cannot be played onto an empty field.

Literally didn't even notice that until I read your comment.

**** why do they keep doing this, just make it a "may" for god's sake. We're probably still going to test it but this type of stuff always bothers me

Wait is it a must? I thought the "any number of targets" let you pick 0. See e.g. the oracle rulings on Kuldotha Flamefiend "You may choose zero targets. If you do, Kuldotha Flamefiend deals no damage, but you may sacrifice an artifact."

Edit - MTG salv doesn't have oracle rulings, so here's scryfall - https://scryfall.com/card/2xm/134/kuldotha-flamefiend

    Edit 2 - Lol super ninja'ed.

I’m so confused how free removal isn’t great in Aggro decks...

It's not free, it costs you a card. Yeah, sometimes you can pitch a now-irrelevant one-drop and it's great. Other times your hand will be this and burn spells, or just this, and it's pretty bad then. Aggro decks will certainly trade card advantage for damage, but they generally don't have much in the way of card advantage so losing a spell is a much bigger deal in aggro than in a deck that can refill or regularly 2-for-1.

Yeah I think people are underestimating how often the single target spell will be cast. If you're just black and need a meh removal spell, this will do it. If you're Orzhov, it's going to be really nice to be able to remove a problematic creature while preserving your own board presence. Yeah, the wrath mode is fantastic and Wx decks will take it if they want a wrath and aren't black, but the single target mode of this card is a huge upside.
