But in limited, a 5/5 for 5 is playable and in limited letting your opponent take 5 to the face to make it a 3/3 is still acceptable. That's what he is talking about.

Yes, either choice is fine in limited, but you are always going to get the worse one. If you are facing some 4/4's and your opponent is at 15 life, grats on your 3/3. If your opponent is at 3 life with chump blockers, here's your non evasive 5/5. That is the problem with the punisher mechanic, you never get the side you want, and the 5/5 side of this guy is barely above average for limited. I am not saying there wont be strong limited tribute cards, there probably will and I would probably play this guy in limited, but you can't think of the tribute guys as having upsides, because what they really have is a crippling drawback.

At the beginning of your upkeep put a -1/-1 counter on each creature.
Whenever a creature dies, its controller draws a card.

What would that card need, to be both cubable and printable. Its been a design floating inside my head that i personally would really like.
Its actually what i submitted for YMTC.:hide:

I don't think it needs to be UB, I think it can be mono. I think it also needs a "if there are no creatures in play, sacrifice ~" clause to be remotely printable since otherwise it just ****s on all creature decks.

Reaching five devotion off of two other colors should not be terribly difficult to do. Mind Control and friends give two (as do many of the enchantment based removal spells eg. Detention Sphere). I would say three other on-color permanents will give you seven devotion on average. As for the ability, I don't really like it. But having a 6/5 indestructible attacker... Geist of Saint Traft is obviously much better, and competing for the same slot. Although the synergy there...

It's 7 devotion, and that is a LOT.

Edit - Realize now you probably meant 5 additional devotion, but I thought you might be confusing these with the Theros gods.

Im going to go through my cube to see if how many untap effects I have. If there is a substantial number, I could see an untap theme coming along with the Inspiration mechanic.

Edit: I don't cube it yet, but Hidden Strings could be potentially really awesome with this guy in a UB tempo build that also conveniently helps the spells matters UR archetype.

I think this pretty much sums up the problems with this card. A lot of the time, to make him good, you have to play bad enablers.

It is not even a zombie, which is a major selling point for Blood Scrivener for us. And I doubt Scrivener will see the end of the summer.

Yup. I think this guy is about on par with blood scriviner, who I have not been impressed with and who was cut from our cube. He does have some cute interactions with some cube cards (like opposition), but it's a lot of work to turn on. Pretty sure he's not worth testing below like 540.

What would it need to cost to be cube playable?

I think it would be an auto-include at 3BB, honestly. I mean, look at Ob Nixilis, the Fallen. Same mana cost, provides reach in a similar way, but no evasion and no card advantage. Yet lots of cubes run him. This guy would be substantially stronger than Ob, letting you swing in with an evasive creature and generating card advantage letting you draw into removal for their blockers all while pinging the opponent for whatever the average CMC of your deck is every turn (obviously with lands included, I would guess a controlly Bx deck would probabaly be between 1 and 2, which is around what you expect to drain with OB when you are in topdeck mode).

Unless they have removal right then to kill it, even if it only triggers once before they burn a removal spell on it you have gotten like a 2.5 for 1.

Yup, the power of mythics and rares has been pushed to make someone, somewhere have to crack more packs per competitive deck, thus increasing the profit from the game. Not sure what the solution is, though, since this strategy is working for wizards in terms of profits.

To play a regular game with your friends (Risk, Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Machiavelli etc) costs ±40-50 euro. Why should Cube be so expensive compared to that? Yes, you can make a peasant cube, but that is like playing Settlers of Catan without wool or something.
I wouldn't mind having weird borders and use the cube for the sake of playing cube. To ensure it is only used for cube, even slightly bigger/smaller cards would be fine for me as long it is sold for a reasonable price comparable with other games.

This. It would have to be under $100 for a cube set to be sold in mainstream stores, and even then, I don't think the market is there, as much as I would like cheaper reprints for non-sanctioned stuff.

I'm so happy I get to cut Blood Scriviner from my cube.

Yeah. He seemed so promising. I think he has drawn like 2 cards in his entire existence in our cube.

What do we think of the WU god? More expensive quasi-phyrexian arena in decks with lots of creatures, with the potential to be a 6/5 indestructible beater. 7 devotion is a lot though.

I think she's gonna be a pass for most cubes, but I like the design.

I don't think Wolfir is a staple. I can definitely see debate for Zealous Conscripts, though.

I wouldn't be surprise if we saw a promo staple again. Wizards mention times and again they don't really care much for keeping power level in the "cycle" to be the same level.

Sure, but a lot of cube staples are also money cards. I doubt they'd want to make you feel like you had to pick white cause it was a $25 card or something. I mean, it's possible, but I just doubt we'll see promo staples unless we go back to the 1 promo per set or the card is a surprise staple.

Edit - And this is in addition to the fact that, while I am sure they don't care if the power level is perfectly even, they don't want to give white serra avatar and black grave titan, for example. I imagine they still want them to be reasonably close.

Not always true. Zealous Conscripts and Wolfir Silverheart are staples. That said, the point stands for most other sets.

Oh, I meant since they started doing the whole pick a color thing. I mean, wurmcoil was a promo too. But I can't see them printing a card at that power level as long as there are 5 promos since it would make that promo just dominate the others.

They're prerelease promos, so I'm not sure what people were expecting. They're supposed to be finishers for sealed that showcase some of the new mechanics. Anyone expecting a cube-worthy card to come from them is bound to be disappointed.

I think Inspiration and Tribute are cool mechanics, so I'm interested to see what else they do with them.

This. There is no way a modern pre release promo is going to be strong enough to be cube worthy.

That red card might be fine in bigger cubes if only it could hit players.
