It seems this deck continues to be consistent, even through the metagame shifts from new bannings. I monitor the metagame through mtgGoldfish occasionally and it hasn't dropped out of the top 3 for as long as I've been watching. Now, it seems to be approaching 30% of the metagame. I play paper, so there are some slight differences, but Delver is always present in tournaments there too - perhaps moreso than online. What does this deck have a poor matchup against? Are there any rogue decks or strategies that are well positioned to fight it?

Stompy and Elves mostly. Delver tends to fair pretty well against most rogue decks since countermagic can deal with just about everything in the format. Elves is probably the worst matchup for the deck since dealing with the dual threat of getting beaten down by a bunch of 1/1's and dealing with Timberwatchs/Melodies/Huntmasters overloads Delver's control draws.

and why isn't Memory Lapse in here? Could it? It is like a remand, except instead of you draw a card your opponent doesn't draw a card.

Most likely because it isn't legal in Modern.

If I were them I would suggest playing 8 mans too, I would get money.
    Input: 8 players times 6tix/player = 48 tix
    Output: (5 + 3 +2 +2 ) booster * 3.30tix/booster = 39.6 tix
Every time an 8 man fires I get 8.4$.

    Price from http://www.magicev.com/

Actually, every time an event fires all the entry fees are your revenue (technically it is whenever tickets are purchased). An 8-man gives 6*8, a Daily at least 6*16, a 2-man 2*2.

WotC is in the business of converting dollars into packs.

Therefore it is solely the opportunity costs associated with offering certain daily events. Either they had to reduce the numbers for their server architecture, or they think people will do more drafting, or blow through more tickets losing 8-man round 1's and queuing up again instead of having to lose 2 games before dropping, or maybe they honestly think that matching online events with paper events more closely is actually important (god knows why).

Essentially 8-mans are only more profitable if people queue for them faster, but it is likely that there are more people that only play dailies so I really doubt this is the case.

I know this might sound like a dumb question, but why Llanowar Wastes over overgrown tomb for casting slaughter games? Is the 2 damage off a shock really that relevant?

Mostly because you can use it as a colorless land without taking damage off it. You are rarely to take more damage off it than you would off the average overgrown tomb so it is better in this deck.

I would not say that a 50/50 win rate qualifies as an average player. That person sounds bad. Over all of magic obviously it's 50/50(since there is always a winner and loser), but I would say your average player is better than that.

I think you may want to look up the word "average".

However if you want to define bad players as including some part of the middle of the bell curve as well is up to you.

Well, it's not on the banlist, so it's legal. Try it again.

It wasn't printed as a common on MTGO so it isn't legal online.

However for the OP, if you are playing paper Pauper you don't necessarily have to heed the online banlist and legalities.

You know this is positive EV right? Most people wouldn't complain about that.

That math goes like this: 12 packs out between 8 players, at a 50% winrate you would need packs to be 4 tickets to break even.
Since packs are never going to be 4 tickets (since they have a price ceiling when they are being sold by the store) the event is always going to be overall negative EV for the average player.

  • posted a message on [General] Why are certain pauper/pez decks called "kitty"
    Quote from Dolono
Pretty simple question: why do certain pauper and peasant decks end with 'kitty', as in 'U/W kitty' or 'G/R kitty?' Does it refer to a particular archetype, strategy, deck config, or card inclusion(s)?

    Thanks!

The original deck was the Kuldotha Boros deck that turbokitty3000 first played in a daily in the first half of the year.

Now the name refers to decks that use bounce effects (Kor Skyfisher, Glint Hawk, Dream Stalker) to create value off artifacts/creatures/or enchantments with enter/leave the battlefield effects (Prophetic Prism, Ichor Wellspring, Reality Acid, Mulldrifter).

They are generally controlly/midrange decks that want to draw cards and use their removal to control their opponent's board.

Even though I don't think that Goyf is the problematic card, I do think that format is currently unhealthy. I'll back this up with what's been happening on MTGO recently - Modern daily attendance is dropping like a rock. Used to be around 100+ people per dailies, rivaling T2. Nowadays it's down to 30-40 people per daily, sometimes having fewer people playing it than concurrent Legacy daily (which historically struggled to even start at times). If this isn't telling, I don't know what is...

The drop in attendance is largely due to rotation. It corresponds to the drops in prices of fetches and other staples that people sold off to finance their standard pickups.

    You could try Sleeping Potion.

I wouldn't recommend Sleeping Potion or Curse of Chains versus Stompy since Quirion Ranger can kill/untap them respectively.

I think that with Heros Downfall, Dreadbore, and Doom Blade we will see a fair amount of black control decks. Also Thoughtseize and Duress.

I think you might be in the wrong forum Grin

I'm a new Stompy player and I like the deck a lot for the few games I played with it but I'm wondering about a few things.
    - The matchup against Izzet Nivix Fiend seems horrendous. I always get smashed on turn 3/4 and there is not much I seem to be able to do about it. How should I play this matchup?
    - Is the Izzet Nivix Fiend matchup one that Moment's Peace is for? Also wouldn't Fog be better since it costs less?
    - I've replaced Vault Skirge with Wild Mongrel since it changing color + pump seems to be better against Izzet Nivix Fiend. Am I wrong here?
    - Would Nature's Claim be better than Gleeful Sabotage against affinity and auras?

The Nivix Fiend matchup is mostly about getting a Vault Skirge suited up with Rancor/other permanent buff and getting out of a range. You should hold up Vines to counter Assault Strobe if possible, and keep back a blocker to threaten blocking with a pump spell on a blockable attack.

Board in Fogs or Moment's Peace for that matchup.

Nature's Claim might be better against Auras since it is instant (killing an Armadillo Cloak before he can attack is quite good) but worse against everything else since it gives your opponents life, not something you want to be doing as an aggro deck.
