My point was to simply state that if every store in the area charged the same price for something, you'd still go to one of them. (or quit playing) Sorry if it was confusing, it sounded better in my head.

Just out of curiousity then, and this isnt meant to be insulting or anything, but what do you consider to be fair market price for 1 booster box of MM? based on everything that's been discussed, and the supposed demand?

It seems like the bottom line debate is "what should my LGS be charging me for a box?" Because it seems like most people on here who are upset with the inflated prices have a problem with thier LGS making money off them.

That's not how market value works. If the only metric was what some people are willing to pay for something then Coca-Cola could charge $10 for a can of soda.
Market value varies from area to area, country to country, day to day, hour to hour. Some store chains charge more for the same products at stores in wealthier areas than in less wealthy areas. Does that mean the market value of those products is that higher cost and that the store in the less wealthy area isn't doing the smart thing by charging more?

I couldn't say exactly what fair market value for a box of MM is at this point because it's in a state of flux and the value is impossible to determine at this point due to the severe lack of info on the set. That said, the SRP of individual packs and average sales tax would put 24 packs of MM at around $180. The price of a box should be less than that.

I dont understand why people are saying that gaming stores are being sleazy, or scamming everyone by charging 250-300 a box when thats the apparent market value for a box of MM.

There's more to market value than what the most interested people are willing to pay. SCG and other online retailers have a massive, faceless pool of dedicated MTG fans to sell to. LGSs and such do not. Charging what some online store is charging and saying "That's market value" makes NO sense.

I agree. People don't seem to understand that if an LGS is selling for 180, they'll instantly sell out and not be able to satisfy the demand.

    ...

Did you honestly think that made sense when you posted it?
The supply is the same regardless. Increased demand in this case doesn't mean increased supply.

Where'd you find one / how much? Still trying to track down at least one or two at a reasonable price myself.

Try comic shops. Most comic shop owners don't bother looking up prices for TCGs on the internet. You could probably score a few boxes for SRP if you're lucky. A friend of mine pre-ordered 2 from a local comic shop for $150 each.

"I especially like how the word ‘Sliver’ evokes something infiltrating, sharp, a lithe and predatory scintilla that’s part of a larger whole…"

This sums up my views perfectly. These new slivers just aren't slivers to me. They don't make sense any more. They just look like Phyrexia knockoffs.

Anecdotal evidence, but one of the employees at one of the local stores here in Winnipeg said that Wizards had just doubled their initial allocation. I would assume from 36 to 72 boxes. Take that for what you will.

I tend to believe this. My LGS told me it was no problem getting me 6 boxes and said that I could get more if I wanted but just a few days before this they said I would only get as many as 6. Since we're a ways off from release I'm betting they've seen the fervor this set is causing and decided to increase the run.

I hate myself right now, but I just payed for 6 boxes at $145 each. I couldn't pass up the deal my LGS was giving me(loyal customer discount). Drafting with my friends should be fun though. I've been wanting to play more draft anyway. Slant

No, you're right. This boom in prices won't last forever. Just like the housing bubble, the dotcom bubble, the MTG bubble will also one day pop. If anyone can't understand why a format that needs $300 worth of lands, playsets of $120 cards, even playsets of $10 UNCOMMONS, just look at any bubble.

I just hope Wizards gets prices under control before they ruin the game.

I agree. WotC needs to do what they can to level out the ridiculous prices on the secondary market. It's a a barrier to even semi-competitive play. When you show up to a FNM and a guy who spent $600 on his deck wipes the floor with you and your deck that you built from boosters and an intro pack it probably feels like you'll never be able to catch up.
I don't know why they feel the need to keep prices inflated but it certainly does feel like a concerted effort on their part to do so. Something like Boros Reckoner should have been the participation promo card for the DGM pre-release. Even the playing field for the people without bottomless chasms for pockets.

My LGS will sell me as many as 6 boxes for $140 a piece(I usually buy 6 boxes of every set there) but even at that discounted price I'm really on the fence with this set.
I won't be able to buy a complete sealed set like I usually do(not so humblebrag, but I own every set to date) so I either buy those cases and singles of what I don't open, or buy collected sets online and just hope they're all mint when they get to me. But my OCD is severe and requires that I own 5 complete collections of every set in modern(one for the collection and 4 to have playsets available). Heaven help me if this obsession spreads to legacy. Basically the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger here is that these are just reprints of cards I already own at least 5 of. I'm not looking at it as a new set.

I've been watching Ebay rather vigilantly and the lowest I've seen is 220+ buy it now including shipping (and that's true as of now, I just checked). If you know otherwise, by all means pm me some links, but they haven't been that cheap for bins.

I went to check the ones I had on my 'Watch List' and they're no longer there. I think the sellers saw that others on eBay were charging considerably more and increased their prices. I would wager we'll see the prices go even higher now that SCG is price gouging.
Unless the prices go down considerably as more cards are revealed(who knows which way that will go?) I'm going to be skipping this set entirely.

I spend entirely too much money on MTG, but I'm having a VERY hard time finding the appeal of MM at this point. Especially at these prices. BTW, there are several US sellers with the booster boxes at $200 w/free shipping on eBay.

+1 to this. Voice is a decent card, but the only reason it's price tag is $30 because of the "money card" syndrome that people have. It's a sideboard hate-bear, expect ~$7-9 in the future for the card.

Doubtful. I see this sticking at $15-$20 for a good long while. It's great in eternal formats but just good in modern, standard and constructed. The price is going to stay high.

I've opened 7 booster boxes(I won one of them at the pre-release, don't judge me) and ended up with 6x normal and 1x foil Voice of Resurgences. I only got 1 Master of Cruelties and no Savageborn Hydras though, so just like every other MTG set, it's all luck.

Maze Rusher looks more like an evolved bipedal sliver than any of these new ones IMO.

So whats our name for new slivers? Manlivers? I'm sure someone can come up with something better than "Humanoid Slivers", like we did for bradywalkers

Shivers. They made us all shiver when we did a double take, and it combines slivers with <****>.
