I agree that having a better Stone Rain might be pushing it. It depends on how much you like land destruction, but I would bet money that this would be one of the most hated cards ever if printed like this. That doesn't mean it's badly designed though, I like it, but I'd dial it back just a little. ryzorz suggestions seem fine.

Went ahead and updated him. Does he feel more balanced but still playable is the question?

This should cost 1RR. It's solidly red, and I doubt that we'll be seeing a 2C planeswalker any time soon.

Strictly better than Stone Rain (which has not been seen as printable for a long time now) is not a great start if you want a printable card.

The ultimate is very expensive for the opportunity to sacrifice all your lands. 5-6 is probably enough, but that would take some play to determine.

So you feel it would be better if it was 1RR, maybe change the - ability to 4 and dropped the ultimate to 6? Orginally the stone rain ability was higher than its starting loyalty for that reason but I felt a mythic could maybe pull it off. Thank you for the input! I'll make some changes when I get a few more comments to see what everyone likes. I just wanted to make something better than chandra since wizards is determined to not let red have good walkers.

This is pretty much my take on a decent to strong Red walker. I'm sure its either overpowered or underpowered, not quite sure which one yet. Also the name could use some messing with I'm sure. ANY input is much appreciated. Also any wording I have wrong please let me know. Kinda tired.

    Raize, Flame of the Earth-1RR
    Planeswalker- Raize
    3

+1: Until the beginning of your next upkeep whenever a player taps a non-basic land that player takes 1 damage.
-4: Destroy Target Land. Raize, Flame of the Earth deals 2 damage to that player.
-6: Sacrifice any number of lands. Put X X/X Elemental Creature tokens with Haste into play where X is the number of lands sacrificed this way.

Annnnddd here we go again. It never fails does it?

Theros is a fantastic set in my opinion. Not all of the cards are playable, alot of them are. I feel its a huge step up over RTR and INN ( RTR was just a let down, the theme of INN felt like it was just trying to hop on the twilight bandwagon. Just made me sick to look at that set. Boring cards everywhere.) Theres alot of interesting things going on, sure somethings could of been improved and this can be said of any set.

This sets going to make a huge splash in all formats, not just standard and EDH, and alot of cards people evaluate as being bad now will eventually be pushed into the light. I'm no expert though, so hey what do I know.

From a flavor standpoint, theros has alot of ground to cover with being a parallel to greek mythology. They may have tried to cover a bit too much, but this is their one chance to get all the things they wanted to cover in.
    I give theros 8/10.

OP clearly has no idea what he's talking about.

Gatecrash is one of the more flavorful sets I've seen in a while. Its cards may be a bit awkward but that doesn't mean they don't have good flavor.

My only real complaint with GTC, and something the OP stated, was that mid block is a really bad place to release an underpowered (BY COMPARISON) set. It is very asymmetrical. I love this block and can't wait to draft it. We did get goodies for standard much to peoples QQ about otherwise.

Also, you are pretty much saying that classics are insanely powerful cards that should of been reprinted here in GTC. But then saying blah blah don't want them to be overpowered. Then pointing out less powerful versions of what you'd call classic and calling them bad.

    Circular Logic is Circular.

Been playing against this card in MWS past couple of days. And I must say its stupid good. It lets aggro decks swing like they just don't care. Oh, you have a board sweep? Dats cool, kill your own dudes. Idc. Boros charm. beatyourfacein.jpg

Pretty much need to have this little guy in random cards in every set from now on. Since this sort of effect is probably going to be printed every set...just kinda throw him in there...I like him!

    Quote from Plaguefather
Sorry, I just woke up, I thought Mishra was an oldwalker? Because if he wasn't wouldn't the brother's war just have ended up in Urza winning just by blinking his eye? If Mishra wasn't on equal footing with Urza, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did... (I haven't read "The Brother's War" yet, been meaning to purchase a copy of both parts...)

Urza became a planeswalker after blowing Mishra and company up with his /cry spell. I mean sylex. Urza becoming a planeswalker was more or less happenstance. The powerstones the brothers carried actually had a planeswalker spark in them. Upon activating the sylex, urza 'died' and was reborn with the gems in his face. IIRC....Its been many a year.

Cloudfin Raptor on the basis that its not committing you to anything. Its an 0/1 flyer in blue that grows. Its the safest pick considering I've never drafted the set before. Alms beast was my second choice. Alms beast may have been the better choice but Cloudfin raptor is going to be brutal in draft I think

I speak 4 languages and I always find English as the hardest one to write (or type). I can speak and understand very well, I just won't be writing English novels.

    Back to the topic.

    I'm 50/50 with this creature.

There are first strike and double strike creatures right now that are seeing competitive play and there are also pingers. There are cards that just hate on this guy and the deck he'll be in. Also, I'm still doubting 4 cmc for a ball lightning variant.

However, there are also cards -that are seeing competitive play- that can help this guy deliver that nasty 6 damage. Lifegain + Burn is good. It has haste which can negate most of the answers an opponent has for it.

Imo this will be pretty much the top end of a boros deck right below Thundermaw hellkite.

Theres a few ways to deal with it when they slam it. But not as much as there SHOULD be for this kind of card.

I expect blind obedience to see play just because of all the hasters. Adding this one to the list further fortifies that.

The comboes people are throwing around with him and silverblade make me shiver. Especially considering I play a slower creatureless Grixis/4CC build. Man. The nerve of wizards.

The back of the cards should be consistent. The backs of the cards can't have any type of identifier.
And a lot of people use transparen sleeves and none sleeve in the case of some casual players.
Cards with different backs could be used as a hint of what card it is.

I was thinking more along the lines of the purple only block. I know what you're talking about and I thought about that immediately after posting. THEN I got derailed by the thought of mana drain

It was, for a long time, going to be what made Planar Chaos an "alternate universe".
They even planned to print Mana Drain in Purple and everything,
then decided it would be too forced, and went with the colorshifting.

    Article

Man, I'd do backflips all the while throwing stacks of money at Wizards if they Reprinted Mana Drain. Idc if theres a whole new color to support it.
    That cards insane.

Red's two-cmc high-power card is two Goblin Guides.

So two cards to = 1? Thats not fufilling the same powerlevel requirements. In fact. its just proving my point better.

Just be balsy with it. Make it busted up like snapcaster.

    1r- 2/1 Creature- Flash
When -Creature- comes into play you may have it deal 3 damage to target creature or player.

And hell I'm pretty sure thats not the same powerlevel as Snapcaster. Just the sheer versatility of snappy.

I understand that this card may seem expensive in formats like standard and such, but I remember reading why Wizards prints such useless creatures to seasoned players such as the drakes and spiders in the core sets, and it was to reach out to different players, in that case, new players to not overwhelm them with abilities and key words. Maybe they're just reaching out to different formats and different players. I have always been a casual player with the same group of friends for about 18 years now, and it is these types of late game cards in our large multiplayer games that makes it so much fun and political. Not all cards need to cater to the standard or any specific format. I believe they are just trying to print stuff meant for all formats. Some standard cards I feel are very underpowered and miss their potential, but that's because I think through a multiplayer perspective. So I guess its more so to keep an open mind that wizards wants to cater to all their children, not just the ones that play in tournaments.

I'm a big advocate for all formats and all cards having their place. Just this card. Man, they could of pushed it more. In EDH/ Kitchen table, there a just so many better answers in those colors to what they are trying to do with those cards. Sure its an all in 1. But its a really really slow all in 1.

I'd rather just run Austere, O-Ring, Path, Swords, Damnation, Wrath and various other blow **** up and get it out of here effects.

Inferno Titan was arguably the second or third best Titan for most of its time in Standard. It got beat out by Primeval Titan because there were always powerful lands in the format, and it was occasionally not as good as Sun or Grave Titan (but rarely both). It was almost always better than Frost Titan. Devil's Play is one of the strongest rare-varietals of Blaze effects, eclipsed primarily by Bonfire, Banefire, and arguably Aurelia's Fury and Rakdos' Return.

I'm really not sure that blue routinely gets better rares than red. For every Dungeon Geists, there's a Geralf's Mindcrusher. For every Omniscience, there's a Time Reversal.

This is true. Its like that with all colors. The point was, red usually gets stiffed. Its alot of the same...bad...effects over and over. I do like red cards. Do not get me wrong. Just every time I see a set I am left thinking...Man I feel like I've seen all these red cards before.

Indeed it feels like that with other colors too. Just red more often than not. And alot of times those red cards aren't very relevant. Theres a reason why its the worse color in EDH. If you look at alot of the red Rares for EDH ( Ones people post for their decks or on 'THE TOP 50/100 LIST' its the same card over and over. Destroy land, take dude, copy spell.

As for standard. Red is always, play dude. Turn dude sideways. Hope For no Board wipe. Lose dudes to board wipe. Sideboard for game 2.

Idk, if you slap up the list of all red rares, to all other colors rares, I feel like you'd just see this repeating pattern of rare being shut out from good cards. Like they don't push it enough. Theres so much they could do that they just aren't.

I want a red version of snapcaster. Same cmc, powerlevel, same standard enviroment.

    Wheres red's snappy?
