  • posted a message on A challenge for the religious or agnostic
I'm not sure where I fall on the theist/atheist scale but I'll give my two cents; I view religion as a form of personal philosophy, something I can reference in times of self-reflection when in need of guidance. Not necessarily because I believe they are true (I preface my random prayers with "If you are real/aware/ect. God...") but because I think they help me reflect and maintain certain "truths"; "Love your neighbor", self-critique, yadayada...

I tend to hold a viewpoint that if one's religious beliefs make them a better person then I don't see what's wrong with it, it's only when the elicited behavior becomes antagonistic or spiteful that I disapprove of it's influence. Personally I find it comforting to paray when I feel that situations are out of my control, for whatever reason, but to take it as an absolute truth, and whatever that entails? Seems wrong, not just because it's logically unsound, but it shows a lack of humility and empathy, two facets which I feel are important to being a positive influence on society.

On the other hand you can activate the Elixir of Immortality and with it's ability on the stack cast Shrapnel Blast and sacrifice it. That is because Elixir of Immortality is not removed from the battlefield until it's ability resolves, whereas sacrificing Tormod's Crypt is part of the cost of activating it's ability.

How does the combat phase with assault formation work? Say I attack with my sylvan Caryatid and he blocks with a 2/2. The powertoughness of my Caryatid goes down to 0/1 because of 2 damage from the blocker? So my Caryatid can only do 1 Damage? So does his 2/2 survive?

The toughness of your creature doesn't change based on damage on it. It's easier to understand and calculate lethal damage that way, but incorrect. Your Caryatid will deal 3 damage because it's toughness is 3 at the time. Excluding actual toughness reducing effects like Flanking.

The Brother's War would make for a great movie. The problem is we'll get a movie focusing on newer stories which have been less stellar in my opinion.

Hell, it'd make a great (modern age) block.

    MaRo did write for Roseanne.

    Did you know that?

I don't think most people are gonna realize this is the greatest post in this thread.

Thanks for the information guys. I wasn't trying to come off as complaining, just generally interested in what's been going on since I took a break. The Gods seemed a little "high" to me but if that's what a mythic generally goes for at this point in it's life then I was just wrong. Maybe being away from budget building for awhile as given me some observer's bias.

I did a little digging and it seems that although prices are relatively stable, there are almost no sellers at the low price point for a lot of the jank rare/mythics. Chasm Skulker, Assault Formation, Chromanticore, Godsend the Gods and other mythics. I have only been following Standard loosely, so I'm fairly unaware of what is being played right now, is the format really that wide-open?

So I've been taking a break from Magic for the past 3-8 months, my local LGS closed down, but a new one should be opening up pretty soon. I was checking prices today to see what kind of jank I could build cheap until the dust settles and was shocked by how high prices have seem to have gotten on terrible cards. The highs aren't that bad, I'm used to a couple competitive playable cards being over 20-25, but so much jank has been pushed into the 3-5$ range, which iirc would be normally sitting in the 1-2$ range.

Now this was TCG, which is normally a bit cheaper then competitors, but it immediately made me think that some major change recently happened to cause this? Or am I just rose-colored glasses-ing prices 3-4 months ago?

  • posted a message on Why is telling someone that they can't buy X because they lack money not considered discrimination?
The only way that I see the "accepted method" for capitalism being discriminatory is if for some reason the seller either priced or valued an item/service above what would be considered normal value solely to prevent an individual or group from being able to obtain it.

Like if a hamburger decided to sell a burger for $1000 just because some guy the owner hates came in to buy it one day, while it knowingly being well-within purchasing power of the average individual that would come into the shop.

Of course if nobody wanted to spend that much money on a burger than the business loses profit, which negates it from being a function of capitalism by definition, and if it didn't impact the business negatively then the jerk just discovered the correct price for the burger and it wouldn't necessarily be discriminatory by function but by intention, which well, isn't poor little capitalisms fault that some yahoos are happy and willing to pay that much.

Which is why, on paper I dislike the idea of capitalism, because it inherently has no concern for morality and ethics, and why I like communism, on paper, because it does.
Then I got older (then an angsty 13)and realized people aren't robots and switched my opinion around. With the caveat that I don't support a complete free-market but a carefully regulated for a capitalism.

  • posted a message on Can anyone in the Magic universe beat Goku?
Probably Pre-mending planeswalkers if not written by Toriyama. I'd pick MTG if only because it has, by far, the better written storylines. Which don't seem very good most of the time, so take that as you will.
Goku wins if he doesn't die in the first confrontation (or subsequently gets resurrected by the Dragon Balls) because following previous storylines he'll train/find some powerup and eventually beat whoever the bigbad is.

So Urza beats Goku but loses to Batman who potentially loses to post-mending Bolas. Either way two MarySues die so we all win in the end.

Seemed like a fine tournament. Finals were a bit boring for my taste, but it was interesting to see how individual skill mattered over metagaming, to an extent.

  • posted a message on To atheists and agnostics: what makes Christianity unappealing or unacceptable to you?
    Quote from mikeyd098 »

    Quote from Tizoc »
Christianity is unappealing because it is unproven. The gap of, "divinity is a possibility" to "My interpretation of divinity is correct" is just too large for me to accept. Which is the major issue I have with most Creationist (Theistic) arguments in general.

That is why we listen to Jesus. He's been through all of this doubt. He even preaches faith.
I'm assuming you mean well, but that really isn't an argument at all. As someone who is minimally spiritual, why should I believe in Christ any more so then Anasi, Coyote, Thor or any other "diety"? I'd imagine that all are claimed to be true by their respective believers.

Imagine if you will, that I am a native on an undiscovered island that has never had contact with the outside world. I am told creationist stories from across regions and time. How am I to know which one, if any, are true?
Jesus may have had his doubts towards his divinity, but he probably was taught from a young age of his virgin birth and all the phenomena surrounding it. I'd argue that in that sense it would be easier for Jesus to believe than say the aforementioned islander.

Ugin is some form of Bolas' spirit incarnate, ala after his death/defeat in Madara or maybe more unlikely his defeat at the Maelstrom? Just an idea that popped into my head.
