I'm not willing to stretch the mana as much. My base is Black/Red splashing Green. Having too many double colored spells early or just too many multicolored in general will lead to more losses than wins because of stumbles. Im just not trying to push the manabases that far even though its possible. But do what you want because that's what I'm doing.
Command is never a dead draw game one which I really like. This card is just an engine with Den Protector. Also this card just kills Jace, Hangarback, Nissa and Soulfire cards I foresee to be huge players in the new standard.
I have actually considered Sarkhan a lot, but went with Ob because his -3 can kill anything to Sarkhan's which kills only certain creatures. However Sarkhan can kill a Gideon before he can +1 for value which is nice, and being able to trigger Draconic Roar and Foul-Tongue is nice. Also I feel this deck will always be a little slower game one, but has a lot of play when it comes to sideboarding. Also Kolaghan's Command is going to be a premium removal spell in the wake of all the weenie decks. If you can just keep looping Commands and Den Protectors how can you lose?
I've been recently been testing out new Jund decks in preparation for the Las Vegas Invitational, and the new Pptq season that's just about to start. My very first inclination was to play Dragons just to run Draconic Roarsince there aren't other substitutes in the new standard. After looking at this thread I've seen a lot of unfocused decks, and to have a consistent Jund deck you need a versatility in your creatures, removal, and lands. This will prevent you from drawing the wrong half of your deck in certain match ups. Also I would run the full sets of both Kolaghan's Command, and Den Protector so you can have as many options as possible. I am currently at school, but when I get home I will post my current list to give guys an idea of a Jund deck with a proactive, consistent game plan. Here is my current Jund build.
The main deck Vraska was an absolute All-star especially with the addition of Genesis Hydra. Vraska is probably the best planeswalker in the deck because she is universal in every match up. She's also another answer to Desecration Demon and my only main deck answer to Master of Waves besides Polukranos. Genesis Hydra was a last minute addition the FNM before but after I went undefeated that night I bumped up the Hydra to a 2-of and it was the best decision I made. The fact it puts planeswalkers and Stormbreath into play uncounterably is not to be underestimated. I decided Ghor-Clan was very bad coming into this tournament because how terrible it is versus Black decks, but also it's impact on the game is very low. I decided to play Genesis Hydra in their place and it didn't disappoint.
I am testing syncopate as well and it's surprisingly very useful. It's a good out to an early Polukranos or like Jace. It's really good because no one is playing around it especially in this deck.
We need to be a Midrange Beatdown strategy. I've played this deck for so long that it works best when you try to pressure your opponent with efficient creatures backed by removal and Domri. I could be wrong, but these are just opinions from playing with the archetype a lot.
Yeah against devotion when playtesting I found killing their enablers really hurt their tempo a lot. If you can capitalize on them while they are behind you can get pretty far ahead.
I think black decks are pretty easy because we have so many threats where thoughtseizing us is pretty redundant when you see a hand of Brimaz, Voice, Domri, and a Dragon. Also on the devotion decks they are very inconsistent so if they are caught slipping we can just put the game very far out of reach, but of they draw the nuts you're just bound to lose. Having a set of Mortars can really help.
I didn't face much devotion, but it's probably a 50/50 match up. I love Xenagos in the deck because he allows me to dump my hand quicker and also fixes my mana for dragons and mortars overload. I also love having a lot of mana dorks because they help me get my game plan going quicker and if I don't see one in my opener my draws just get clunky. They also help with monstrosity which is the best mana dump this deck can have.
I designed this to prey on aggro, control, and black decks while having a fighting chance against devotion. The mana while seems like it would be bad was actually very consistent thanks to Courser, this card is insanely powerful, and Caryatid. The power level of this deck is very high and I will be tuning it more for an upcoming Ptq in my area.
I have such a variety of threats that my opponents need specific removal while taxing their better removal. The new cards from Born of the Gods especially the new temple really helped this deck out. Courser of Kruphix and Brimaz, King of Oreskos gives this deck an overall edge in other creature matches and the planeswalkers help out versus control.
The only change I have really made was putting a domestication in the side for a Bident because that card is just nuts with Brimaz and Precinct captain.
How do you guys like Owens list on His lastest article? Seems like its very straightforward and powerful. I would love to play Bident of Thassa because its permanent devotion and with all the token producers we can draw tons of extra cards each turn.
