Is anyone still using Cockatrice, and if so, where can I download? Thanks.

What's the server, port, and password for the server everyone's using to play Cockatrice online? I know it's woogerworks but what do I have to enter in order to connect and play?

    Server: cockatrice.woogerworks.com
    Port: 4747

Username / Password are dependent on if you registered an account or not. Non-registered users can simply type a name that is not already registered in and the password means nothing. If you register an account you must enter the username/password combination used during registration.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

How does everyone feel about jotun grunt being a budget replacement to goyf?

I dislike it because of the upkeep cost. You're deck should try to work wth only the use of 3-4 lands... So if you are paying half to 2/3's your land just to keep the 4/4, you are losing potential burn/creature drops. The best budget replacment for Goyf is Scavenging and that isn't that great. Goyf is Goyf, there really is NO replacement for it...

The upkeep cost on Jotun Grunt costs no mana, it "costs" returning cards from graveyards to the bottom of the owners library (though it is cumulative).

Does someone have a few card suggestions for a deck around Deathbringer Thoctar and similar cards?

I don't have a deck list, but I've given him some thought beofre: personally I would go with Phyrexian Devourer and Necrotic Ooze (but I'm a jerk like that). Probably GB (You wouldn't need R since you would not plan to cast the Thoctar). Run Green for some ramp/early protection in Wall of Blossoms. Use Buried Alive to get the Thoctar and Devour into your GY. Resolve the Ooze and win.

I like the addition of GSZ. Have you conisdered Recurring Nightmare as a 1 or 2 of? Can work really well with any creature you have with ETB or Die abilitites.

    Hey guys,
This thread looks like a really solid idea. I'm not sure if I should post this deck here or in its own thread. Since it's still early development, I think it may work better here. As far as deck building, I would say I'm like Mr.Sinister (read his early post), in that I'm not overly creative. Most decks I've built/designed are budget to semi-budget versions of decks I've researched.
    Which brings me to my UWR schematic; I've slowly been getting cards to make this Aggro-Control deck but I'm kind of stuck on how to move forward. This is what I have so far (so far 49 cards);

So it's a bit of a UWR Goodstuff.dec but also a bit of a Pet.dec - I really want a deck that can run Ajani and Ral; they can both help me get though with other threats and can be win-cons on their own if they ultimate (like all good 'Walkers).

Other card choices I've considered (Between MS and SB):
    Creatures
    Restoration Angel
    Venser, Shaper Savant
Thundermaw Hellkite (Stormbreath Dragon when it drops in price...2 years from now )

    Spells
    Mana Leak
    Electrolyze
    Supreme Verdict (SB)
    Anger of the Gods (SB)

    Off-Limits cards (mostly due to budget);
    Remand (until it's reprinted)
    Cryptic Command
Snapcaster Mage (unless he drops significantly post-rotation, which I doubt)
    Anything along those lines really.

This post has gone on for awhile already, so I'll stop for now. I'm not really sure where to go moving forward, so any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated and considered. Cheers.

The butt-hurt is strong in them, yes.

I've never understood the whole "Too strong/expensive for casual argument". It's all relative to your play group. I'm fortunate that my groupd is fine with broken cards and combos: see Skullclamp, Survival of the Fittest, Balance etc (I could give a much larger list, but you get the point). Would I be able to comfortably play those cards in every casual group out there without people rage quitting? Probably not (but I still would :D).

That said, I do think it requires a bit of common sense and decency. If you have a deck that can consistently curb-stomp almost every other deck in your group, then I would use it sparingly (or allow someone to borrow another deck you may own of equal power if that's an option).

On the other hand, if you have one person in your group who is either a) a newer player or b) on a significatnly lower budget, then I would maybe make some less powerful decks so they don't feel oppressed, and offer to let them use one of your decks (most people should not be offened by this; I've been on a very limited budget for the past few months and I am more then happy to use a friends deck if mine isn't working for a given situation).

yesterday I started getinga warning from my anti-virus saying that there is a tojan-downlad detected everytime I try and load a thread. I've been on this site since last year and this has never happened (and I've had the anti-virus since january). Is there any idea as to what is going on? I may need a response PM'd to me as I do not think I'll be able to check this thread. Thanks.

There is a correct place for this. Tech Support Forum down near the bottom. There is already a thread there. Closed - Galspanic

  • posted a message on Will you use Bestow cards in your causal playgroup?
I see no reason not to use them in a Casual group. I personally won't use them because I find them all to be over costed for what you get. Theros has some cards I'm really excited about, but these are not them (nor are the Heroes for that matter; Heroic seems pointless for me as I generally don't run pump or auras).

Personally, if I see a card with a lot of different options (like the various Charms), I want to try to be able to take advantage of all the possible interactions to the fullest. If you don't, you're basically playing with only half a card, since one of the abilities won't be used. Deathrite Shaman is one of these cards, and I feel that you should either tweak the deck to try and at least have the OPTION of using the first ability, or run him in lower numbers to reduce the "inefficiency" of the card.

I'm certainly not saying that he is bad. I'm just saying that if you can't take full advantage of a card, you're not playing to the best results that your deck can offer.

That's part of the thing holding me back; as far as GY hate, Ooze is better. DRS is nice as he does a bit of everything and can ping the opponent to death if the game stalls. Tweaking the deck is possible but not ideal:
    1) Buy Fetch lands - simply out of budget, so they're not an option.
    2) Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse - As the land they fetch enters tapped, all I gain is staying on curve (as long as DRS is out) and slight mana-fixing.
    3) Cycle lands - These are an option, as it would be a 1-mana cantrip, but if I do need the mana, they enter tapped. I try to avoid EtB Tapped lands as much as possible (excluding the Zendi man-lands).

@ExImperialDragon: I'm thinking of running him in a Jund or Junk deck, depending which way I go. I think in either case, between my deck and my opponents, I'll have enough Instants/Sorceries to make use of the life loss. As far as Expanse/Wilds, a few people run them in the odd deck, but not commonly enough to consider it a viable mana source. I've considered running them myself but that just keeps me on curve (though it does allow me to fix mana a bit).

As for the card suggestions, they are all great but I already have a deck idea for him (Jund or Junk, maybe BUG; basically BGx), so most of the cards aren't really a fit (or within budget in the case of Sinkhole and Wasteland).

@Narvuntien: That's kind of my thoughts on it. I'm just indecisive and like to hear peoples opinions Smile

I've been considering saving for 2-4 Deathrite Shaman, but the question is; is he worth while without Fetches? I only play casual and no one I play with uses fetch lands. He still does a lot but can't ramp. Is he still viable?

I've stared down a Stasis deck in said environment. Some people don't quite understand the meaning of the word casual.

I think Casual is a relative term; some groups are much more competitive then others. What may seem Degenerate or Oppressive to one group, may be "just another deck" to a different group.

In any case, grabbing two Glacial Fortress and Terramorphics should cost $4 at the VERY most. Like I said, tweaking the basic land count should be enough to support UU or other restrictive mana requirements.

I feel like you could definitely make the sacrifice cards work for you. If you apply enough pressure with your creatures to force blocks and such, you can ensure that they only have one creature at a time which makes sacrifice effects very powerful. Against tokens, Supreme Verdict is definitely the way to go like you said.

Exactly. Sacrifice effects work best when you've been applying constant pressure, so they have no choice but to sac their Blightsteel or Geist.

The list looks pretty solid. I would consider some non-targeted removal. You mentioned Supreme Verdict; I would also consider Diabolic Edict. I would probably replace some of the B targeted removal with either Swords to Ploweshares or Path to Exile. They are not super budget but StP isn't overly costly either.

I would probably ditch Unsummon and maybe SB something like Echoing Truth.

I agree that Batterskull really needs to be here though.

I'd also consider Young Pyromancer; gives you a creature drop between Delver and Guttersnipe and can also give you quite the board presence.
