I really want a Modern MUD deck, but the Tron lands are really all we have. there is no equivalent for some of the sol lands, and I'm not sure it is a bad thing. as fun as the MUD deck would be, Affinity with those lands would be stronger than anything Modern has seen, including at Philly.

That said,I have made MUD decks. I had the Tron lands, a few mana rocks, and Kuldotha Forgemaster into Blightsteel. it was less consistent than Tron, and less flexible, but it had a lot of the same win cons, and when it worked, it was a real monster. definitely a casual deck for now

In tournaments, some people play nacatl, while some don't. Maybeits good if we can use frank karsten method of assembling a deck? by compiling all the decks in top 16 and average them out see from the results how many nacatls / atarka's command / skullcrack we should play.

Realistically these are going to be moving targets. Different metas are different.

So, I'm confused. How is Nacatl better than Vexing Devil? Both fill similar roles, but Vexing devil doesn't make you have to take a ton of damage to make it useful, and if you opponent decides to take 4, you're still ahead. Nacatl just seems worse.

It is simply the maximum value of the card vs the minimum value. Vexing devil is at most 4 damage against a good player. Any other creature will at most just kill them. Vexing devil also has the same downside as any other creature, they just kill it with a random spell.

Wow this has gone on a long time! Nacatl is a card that is not red, does not have haste, and will set you back in mana or life to really be used, and it cannot go over other creatures, not even trample. Why are we talking about this card? look, I like it for a Zoo deck or something, but the reason it is bad here is the same reason it is bad in Stompy, using it means diluting the main plan of the deck. Does it help against Bloom, looking across the table at Prime Time? How about Twin, looking at or stopping a million Exarchs? No? alrighty then. Can we please, PLEASE move on? gods, it's as bad as the banlist thread!!!

Actually it is great against exarch. They can't really block if you have two mana open.

for Command? but really, is it EVER wise for Exarch to block when Burn has mana open? even one, Nacatl+any burn spell kills Exarch, so does any other creature in the deck and any burn spell. and if we have mana for Command, that means also having mana for revelry, so they don't go for the combo until they have mana for counterspell backup. Exarch blocking Nacatl in the face of Burn mana is a pretty weak argument

Interesting that you picked bloom/twin; two deck where shocking ourselves usually doesn't really matter, and where getting t1-t2 creatures raises our chances of winning by a lot Wink

I picked them deliberately. Twin (at least around me) is a tempo deck, small beatdown and burn, and they can deal with Nacatl. And Bloom...Titan doesn't care about creatures smaller than what Tron runs. having the early creatures does help a whole lot, but it has to be the right ones. Against tempo Twin, I don't relish double Bolt just to get a mediocre conditional creature with no haste that is neutered by Moon

What are the thoughts on Silent Arbiter and Trinisphere ?

I don't see Sphere being good, it hurts us too much trying to assemble Tron. Arbiter.....is intriguing. not sure what to make of it. it could sure help against some decks, if it could come down. I actually like the idea, it needs testing though. obviouslySB if it makes it. how many might you run/what gets cut?

I can only assume Sorin made Avacyn out of Nahiri somehow, and now that the Eldrazi are free, he has to undo it, letting darkness fall over his home because he needs Nahiri again

Well that was certainly the best UR in a long time. It cool to see theother PW's come to lay down the law. it could be better done, sure, but this imho, is the first in months to show any real effort

I'm in the mood to brew, try to make a new deck. I'm just looking for cards that are synergistic but not fully explored, ideally something that lends itself to a 1/2 color build. What are some cards you think could be a good jumping point, cards that have the potential to be very cool, but are not really played? Cards like Heartbeat of Spring Smile

I only see an issue with Hive Mind. if you are not playing black or blue, there is really not much for answers to Hive+Pact in the format, and even then, it's a very small window. I don't think they should touch the ramp package, ramping into a single big creature is more or less interactable, and almost sorta fair, well within what this format can endure. besides, saying a Turn 2 6-drop monster is too powerful is a slippery slope, if they ever took it one step more, to Turn 3, Tron dies, and the format does not need to lose one of the more serious police decks

  • posted a message on when does oath spoilers begin?
Like others have said, the real spoilers will start in the first days of January most likely, but I would be shocked if they did not give us a Christmas spoiler, like they did with Kiora. I would guess a PW, or if they will be an Eldrazi Titan again,it could just as easily be that. or do like with BFZ, literally show all of the playable cards in one go :p

people assume there is no middle ground between power creep and stagnation. that is just silly. the power level doesn't have to climb, it can go sideways. new engine cards, cool build around cards or mechanics, that one card to push a nearly competitive deck to playable. it happened with Merfolk and Elves, Goblins is getting close, they could have given Modern really good Allies. but they didn't

I have said it before, but I am not judging this set on power level. I get that it can't break Standard, fine, I get Newlamog, who cares about the rest? and I know better than to call cards bad too early. but Dig and Cruise, it was a case of people underestimating the alternate cost, there is nothing in this set that has a relevant cost reducer, please stop making the comparison it doesn't hold up!!!

What I AM judging this set on is how interesting it is. Devoid had the potential to be cool, but they are cowards, took zero risks, and it was just a waste, as far as Timmy or Johnny is concerned, it is half assed. I care nothing for Spike or Vorthos, as we saw with Theros block, flavor alone does not make an awesome block. and Theros at least tried, they had the Gods, which while they were weak outside of Standard/EDH, it was novel and cool, and close to playable. Devoid, Ingest, they are cool at first glance, but they seriously did more with freaking Megamorph. Landfall is back, and nerfed. manlands are back, and nerfed. they gave us a couple classics, sans playability. I don't care about broken power level, this set is uninspired, parasitic, lazy, generic, and completely unworthy of the name Zendikar. they hurt the legacy. they should have gone back to Dominaria, one more bad set based there wouldn't change anything

I get that Wizards wanted to cut back on Standard power, fine, whatever, who cares? But couldn't they have waited until next block? To do it to Zendikar just feels like a smack in the face. A set at this power level would always duck a big one, but did it seriously have to be during Zendikar? That upsets me more than the set itself being craptastic, this was the block I really got into the game the first time around, and doing this here really makes it feel like they are spitting on us. I know there will be cards that turn out fine, but not many. And it is just SO LAZY!!! Devoid had the potential to be extremely cool, but they did jack-***** with it. Oh well, pick up my full arts, and Newlamog, maybe 1-2 others for Eldrazi tribal. Next!

Meh, it's actually the rare that upsets me least so far. 5 colors and haste, sure uncommon would be fine, maybe even common, but that is not going to happen in Zen 2.crap. if there are a few good ones drop creatures, this good swing the game a bit, and as usual, if there are fairly good 3-4 drops, I could see it matching Caryatid popularity.
