What a silly thing. They just arbitrarily picked a starting point instead of applying an ounce of logic for the format.

Any set you choose to be the start date is entirely arbitrary.

Only if you consider the starting point of Modern to be entirely arbitrary as well.

a lot of people do. but it isn't because it lines up with a change in frame. choosing the change in frame as the criteria was arbitrary, it could have been any number of things, including the creation of planeswalkers, but it was a clear shift in some visible way. RTR as the point is arbitrary, but it was also a clear turning point in Magic history

I guess it's technically arbitrary, but it feels right. I had thought they were going to start with Origins to skip the fetches, but RTR is a much better starting point. it is the start of the higher print runs, it is the start of having very few super expensive cards, it is when the game got a HUGE influx of new players, it ties in nicely to the RTRTR that pretty much all current players know well, it was a golden age, and it was as far back as they could go without running into LotV type high price due to scarcity. like i said, i thought they were going to do Origins to skip the fetches, but RTR is where i personally would have put it, and the obvious place to put it if they were going to ban fetches. really the higher print run and more supply was probably one of the biggest deciding factors against going back earlier

Yeah, they probably should have banned the cards that were banned in standard like they did when modern first came out, like Aetherworks marvel and Emrakul, the promised end.

I think they made the right call waiting to see about that stuff. they did it for Modern, using the context of previous Standard, and how many cards on the initial list have proven that they never should have been banned? a bunch. 6 of those cards are currently in the format and not making any waves at all. a lot of cards especially in the last couple years were too strong because there was probably the fewest number of answers there has ever been in Standard. Marvel was broken because there was almost nothing to answer it. Marvel was banned before Abrade was even printed, it could have been fine if they had waited a few weeks. they should definitely wait and see

well the willingness to just ban the fetch lands in the new format gives me hope for a proper reprint of the ZEN fetches at least, which is about as far as i care.

but the idea that cards from what currently passes for the average Standard set will see play in a format that includes RTR and Kaladesh blocks is pretty funny. RTR block Constructed is probably a more powerful format than the entirety of current Standard

I'm building an Oloro deck, my first in 3 colors. sorta pillow fort I guess? lots of counters, removal, board wipes, lifegain, just trying to encourage people to send their attacks somewhere else, while I gain at least 2 life a turn without looking real scary. I play Rhystic Study and Smothering Tithe , and I am going to play a few more Treasure cards, but I want a couple more like those two. cards that I can drop early and they gain me resources. tokens that make mana, cards, creature destruction, pinging. just stuff that I can drop and not have to do anything for except play. I don't care if they tax my opponent, I would just much rather play something slow and steady than fast and scary like rituals.

Vorinclex is a RIDICULOUS beater and ramp crd in one, with a side of control. Don't expect friends to be happy to see it Wink

Primordial Hydra the absolute biggest and stupidest and most satisfying green creature ever printed. no subtlety, no backup plan. no evasion so it's pretty easy to kill, but if they can't kill it, no amount of non-arbitrary lifegain can keep up. it is not a competitive card, but it is pure Green philosophy. it is the greenest green to ever green, and this has been a pet card of mine for as long as I have been playing, Hydra and i joined Magic at right around the same time Smile

I thought bestow was a little over costed, but it was the first go 'round for it, this time they know what it is and how it plays so they should be able to better cost it. Really looking forward to devotion and constellation. I think heroic has been superseded by prowess.

Which gods you think make it in? I doubt they'll include all 15. If the story is about Elspeth and the underworld, you have to figure Heliod, Phenax and Erebos, possibly Athreos. The only way they 15 make it in is if they make some rare.

looking back at things like landfall, I think the current trend is to make returning mechanics cost MORE than they dd previously, not less. it is all about draft, with a couple playable mythics, don't get your hopes up for Bestow to be any better than last time

It would require too much errata and cause too many headaches and invalidate the traditional card back. What they did with colorless was neat, or snow mana, or something with Energy, but things like that are as close as they could ever do without it being more trouble than it is worth

In terms of raw volume fastbond is probably the best, although it is banned in most formats.

I could be wrong, but they all strike me as being bad. the cmc is too high, the impact is too low, these are powered more for Limited

Robin Hood is bad because he has to attack? He doesn't even have to connect to get you the card, just attack. how many red creatures don't have to connect to get value in Modern? I think Eidolon may be the only one. I hope everyone agrees with you and the other people not respecting this card so I can get it cheap, but I don't see any way this isn't the star of the set by the time it rotates from Standard

Young Pyromancer just needs you to hold priority and cast an instant or sorcery in order to get value. Seasoned Pyromancer doesn't even need that. Bedlam Reveler is expensive or a late-game play but is instant value.

But I've killed so many Goblin Rabblemasters before they had a chance to make any Goblin tokens and so many Kiki-Jikis before they could truly go infinite that I cannot treat Robber of the Rich like he's on par with Young Pyromancer.

the tokens off of either Pyromancer still need to attack to do anything, and YP is really more of a Legacy card than anything that matters in Modern, because a 1/1 with no abilities is bad. I will give you Reveler. Same for Rabblemaster and Kiki-Jiki, they aren't really the real deal in Modern most of the time. and at 5 mana or 3 without Haste, they really aren't comparable to a 2-drop with haste. Reveler is a card in Modern, let's say SP is as well, even though it hasn't torn anything up, the card is strong for sure. but the best red creatures in the format are Swiftspear and Goblin Guide. they see the most play, they have had the most success. both have haste, but need to attack and actually connect to be worth beans. Guide has a potential drawback, and Swiftspear is really more of a 2-drop than a true 1-drop. Robin Hood gets you as much damage as Goblin Guide if it connects, and it takes a card from the opponent if it just swings, a card you can cast. and because this is Modern, I will usually take whatever is on the top of your deck over 2 Elementals.

I am not saying it is a fact that it is good enough, or that my judgement is always great, I had a binder full of Hero of Leina Tower at one point (although I killed it on Stoneforge) just that it compares well to the cards that do already make the cut

not gonna lie, I would use Stoneforge Mystic it just seems like in a format that has no trouble hitting 4-6 mana, a bird with more equipment than all 300 of the Spartans could be REALLY entertaining. sure it's technically just a 1/1, you still need to kill it RIGHT NOW

So, any new thoughts with the whole set spoiled?

    I like

Robin Hood (best card in the set)
Once Upon a Time (runner up)
Stonecoil Serpent (not sure if it replaces Wurmcoil, but it's definitely worth trying)
    Drown in the Loch
    Witches Vengeance (sideboard only)
and maybe Wishclaw Talisman, but it honestly seems kinda janky

there are a few roleplayers, but Robin Hood and Once Upon a Time are the only two that I am absolutely sure about. anybody else looking super seriously at anything i missed for Modern?
