Need an opinion on History of Benalia. Would this card's price go down once it rotates from Standard?

Was looking to test in a few of my decks, but the price right now is still too high.

It's a Standard all-star that hasn't really found a serious home anywhere else, a bit of EDH demand won't matter, that card price is going to plummet so hard it kills the dinosaurs all over again.

that's kind of neat, a bit of extra ramp, and helps us stay alive. I just wish my meta wasn't so disgustingly combo. you have no idea what I'd give to face a nice midrange or aggro deck, or even the mirror

I don't want Phoenix to go anywhere. I would like to see Hollow One go away, buy that's just because I hate it, not because it's justified. The only card U would seriously consider is Burning Inquiry. I know Looting is technically a lot better, but the number of times I would have been fine against their creatures and then that blasted card took my last Burn spell to end it, or my answer, or basically just whatever else and left me with lands or other useless stuff is just ridiculous. I don't care if they loot stuff, but it shouldn't be a coin toss for the deck NOT built to loot getting burned to the ground

I play RiP because once it resolves, it's the strongest grave hate around. But if your meta is full of stuff that needs a first turn answer, Surgical has no replacement. But if your meta is not SCREAMING fast, unless you cut white, RiP is the best grave hate in the entire game.

why would they design for a format that isnt competitive (block constructed). we saw when it was around how difficult it could be to balance.

also, its pretty clear they arent designing solely for limited. 'powerful' is a relative term, and designing for one thing and just hoping the others 'just work out' seems like a poor strategy when they have the space to do more.

there has been a noticeable shift in design anyways. we are seeing more power at lower rarities, better answer cards, and both standard and limited have had positive reception - dominaria is considered one of the better draft sets in the history of the game and the GRN rotation got standard out of its funk. so im not sure where your criticism is aimed.

They could make it competitive, it would literally take one announcement to do so. And it doesn't have to be Block, that was just spitballing. Design for Modern could lead to power creep a bit too fast, it was just the next step up from what they do now. Extended might be more likely. We are seeing more power at lower rarity since Kaladesh, and that's great, but it's still only a couple cards a block. I have no idea who was a huge fan of Dominaria limited, I thought it was incredibly boring.

Saying that Standard is in a better place than it has been in since before BFZ is not saying much, that is a very low bar, like 'better than Dragons Maze'. I mean....sure?

I did not say solely for limited, I said primarily for limited. My entire point was that if they drop 'too strong for Standard' and go to 'too strong' as the bar, and quit warping the sets around 'balanced for Limited' then the quality of Standard and Limited will go up. Triple Innistrad is considered maybe THE best limited format of all time. Limited was a consideration, but you can see looking at it that it was not designed as a draft set first, with chase cards for Standard put in after they figured out Limited. It's strong, with strong cards, creative designs, and some real chances taken in the name of 'this could be really cool after the draft'.

Can we just get rid of Limited? Do we really need both Limited and Standard to sell packs?

I don't think getting rid of Limited is the answer. I think everyone wins if 'designed for Limited' stops being the primary goal. I know it has always been a consideration and that's great, but it's become very clear in the last few years that it is their primary focus, with cards for Standard and beyond being relative afterthoughts.

I think they should design good powerful interesting sets, and let Limited work itself out. I don't draft much, I am not good at it, but the most fun I have ever had in Limited is sets where the cards are actually good. Back when I played Standard, we had Lightning Bolt and Doom Blade, the Titans. It wasn't overpowered for Standard because that wasn't such a laughably low bar. Limited was a ton of fun because you weren't picking crap cards and trying to cobble together something that looked like a deck. A lot of the cards I drafted back then have seen play in my other decks, not just rares and mythics either. I just think that if they designed for maybe Block Constructed first instead of Limited, with the idea that a good number of drafted cards would see SOME use after the draft, everyone would win.

Really? No unban at all? Oh well, now I can stockpile SFM until next January

I don't think they should go back to bigger sets. sets already have maybe 10 cards for anything beyond EDH, and upping the count by 50 would probably give us 49-50 more draft-only cards and lower odds of drawing the good ones

What are you cutting to make room for Gut Shot? I think it would be an extraordinarily bad idea to cut a good burn spell for Gut Shot.

I do not believe anything needs to be swapped in just to make Skewer playable. It's playable already.

In regards to enchantment removal, you can look at relevant enchantments in my last "burn hate" post. Leyline it's barely played these days (something like 2.5% of decks). I am still happy to play Smash over drev.

I figured, I just wanted to be sure. I've been on a Tron kick, I'm out of practice. I wouldn't cut a 'good' Burn spell. My meta is light on creature decks, I could cut a couple Blaze and never miss them

So Gut Shot is not added to enable Skewer? I'm just trying to nail down my list. it would make people puke on here, it's very meta, but Skewer is just so good, I wanted to see where people are landing with it

I just think with previous buyouts and hoarding, it was Commander exclusives only in one deck. With a decent print run and a couple Zendikar fetches (and shocks or tango lands or something else chesp) in each one, there isn't a clear buyout target. It's not a group of 3-4 decks and people only want one. I think it would benefit people. Commander players who have them can recoup most of the deck value from Modern players and just keep what they want from it, and it's not a product that will be hoarded long term, as long as it makes sense, Modern players might buy them for the fetches and give Commander players really good deals on the rest. I know that when TNN came out, local Legacy players ended up basically subsidizing a good portion of the cost.

Of course this all depends on a proper print run. Just a handful per LGS doesn't help anyone, and not just in this scenario.

I would really love to see Zendikar fetches. 3-4 color decks, with all of the on color Zen fetches. Players who have them can trade them for staples, it gives new players something they can trade to finish a deck, it brings the blasted prices down. It gives some better fixing. I just think that there are very few cards with higher actual demand, and very little that would check more boxes for what a reprint should do.

I thought they had the pattern of a new plane next, before a return? I would think everything goes to hell in rtrtr 3, then after Core or maybe with it, the fall set sets up the return of NPH, and they go nuts. Phyrexian mana, infect, the works

Well guys why not unban Skullclamp? It's not even that strong. Would suck against Turn 3 KCI Kill or Storm. And drawing two cards for 1 mana and you have to kill a creature so you are only neting 1 card, seems really weak in a world of flipped Thing in the Ice plus double Phoenix or triple Hollow One. Plus literally everyone is playing artifact removal.

So Skullclamp should really not be banned.

You do see the difference between that and Stoneforge, right? The payoff for Skullclamp is a blistering fast combo kill or whatever else you need. The best possible payoff for SFM is a creature that is hopelessly outclassed by either of the major payoffs Tron goes for on the same turn. Let's say you stick a Batterskull on turn 3, and I can't remove it for 2-3 turns. Neat, I'm still out of Bolt range, and I have probably been doing my own thing and you aren't doing so hot. That game still goes to turn 6-7 without blocks. SFM is a good card, Batterskull is a very good play, it's just that unlike Skullclamp, it doesn't add any angle to Modern that isn't already running around.
