Dec 11, 2018Melkor posted a message on Cards that should be reprinted to enter the Modern card pool7th edition. Not a reprint, just say 'this is Modern legal now'. We get Counterspell and a couple other toys, we might not need to ban anything at all, and the folks at Wizards who think Doom Blade is too good for Standard don't have to get all bent out of shape.Posted in: Modern
Dec 9, 2018Posted in: ModernQuote from ElectricEye »I would rather see another powerful discard spell printed than a preordain unbanning.
Powerful discard help the fair Bx midrange decks, whereas powerful cantrips just help the linear decks more.
The problem, of course, is getting it through standard first. But if it's cleverly designed, I think it can be done. Collective Brutality was an excellent example of this - a card that's much stronger in modern than standard.
EDIT: even something like a non-random Hymn to Tourach would be very welcome in the format. It would greatly help attrition strategies, especially 8-rack
I think they need to come back to Revolt. it's fine in Standard if they design with it mostly being creatures dying to enable it, but it's SO good in Modern. UU Revlt Counterspell that's a Mana Leak without it. Duress with a 2 life loss that turns into Thoughtseize, Shock that turns into Bolt. That mechanic was the best in a really long time, and it still has a lot of room

Foils mainly is what I’m asking about. I assume non will be reasonable at like $15ish?
we can't know yet, there's really nothing to compare it to. it's gonna probably hurt in foil
but the Player Reward version is in freefall, which I am excited about. looking to see if they keep going
Dec 6, 2018I think people have mentioned it, but you really need to ask what midrange IS. Jund was historically just a pile of the best cards, there was no exceptional synergy, they were just cards that were never really going to be bad. if you really define what midrange is, unless BGx is part of your definition, that color combo might not be there, but I will think you find that it exists in Modern already. so, what exactly is Midrange?Posted in: Modern

Wish it could be another new spell, like Fatal Push or even Assassin’s Trophy. On the other hand, this is a great given that the old promo is getting too expensive to acquire now.
As the owner of two of the old ones, I'm not in love with this promo choice
Unless you are planning to sell soon, this shouldn't change much. The price may fall short term, but they are still going to be the more desirable and they will go back and continue the slow climb.
Dec 5, 2018not sure if this is already known, but the first I am seeing of it. HOLY CATS do I want a set of those Bolts!Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Also the lands you can get from side events
Dec 1, 2018Posted in: Big ManaQuote from sicsmoo »There's no silver bullet that "ROFLSTOMPS" Ponza because outside of all the land destruction, it's just a fair midrange deck. Tarmogoyf is a fantastic card in the matchup because it will be a large body for just 2 mana. Other than that you can just lower your curve - play more copies of Walking Ballista and Thragtusk. Play Crucible/Life From the Loam. Dismember is very good because it can snipe their Arbor Elf or kill Tireless Tracker later. Warping Wail can be really good to counter Stone Rains but it also gets shut off by Blood Moon.
Added Grishoalbrand to the sideboard guide @PlainsAngels
The midrange plan doesn't bother me, it's just decent, not even brutal midrange, I can beat that same as any other, Wurmcoil,Karn, concede? It's the LD that had me seething. I did pack Wail, but like you said, Blood Moon SUCKS. I was thinking of adding one Wastes just so I have an out there. I'm hoping to get Goyf off of the latest reprint when the price falls a bit. I have one Crucible in the side. a guy just pointed out Sacred Ground I might try that, maybe one Temple Garden to have access to some white toys. it just SUCKS when the Ponza player isn't dropping any threats, just LD card after card, and you can't do much because you're sitting there with 2 Mountains
Dec 1, 2018back from another FNM. Lost to a Turn 2 Griselbrand win, so that happened, whatever. Once again, I HATE Ponza, I hate, hate, HATE Ponza. I don't want to switch to another deck, butit's REALLY tempting to check which deck just kills Ponza hardest and bring that. MAINBOARD Stone Rain??? I sided in 9 cards, NINE. and it wasn't enough because I never had mana. This deck can't run on 2 lands, it's not possible. is there anything that ROFLSTOMPS them that we can play? I don't care if it's ONLY for that matchup and actively awful everywhere else. is there a card we can run that even with their good hand just makes them look stupid> I may have asked after the last time I played that matchup, but i can't find it. I am fine losing some power in another matchup if I can pull a 'Hulk on Loki' and restructure the floor with that blasted deck. TBC, I'm a bit annoyedPosted in: Big Mana
Nov 29, 2018I am NOT calling for a ban, let's get that out in the open.....but does anyone else think Hollow One is a problem? a really god hand for that deck is not so far from a really good hand for pre-ban Eldrazi. We talk about the different enablers for it and how brutal that deck is and now they have Phoenix. I don't play against it much, only the one guy in my LGS, but there seems to be a LOT of talk about banning different cards because they enable multiple Hollow Ones by turn 2. Again, NOT calling for a ban, the deck doesn't bother me, but wouldn't it be possibly better to let them rely on the rest of the brutal beaters in the deck and keep the enablers for a lot of oddball decks around, just get rid of the most busted of the payoff cards?Posted in: Modern
Nov 28, 2018Posted in: ModernQuote from Bearscape »It's funny to see modern in the light of an actually GOOD standard format for the first time in years, it really highlights how many decks in modern demand you to play obnoxious non-games of "stop the one thing I do".
After a long time of being mostly happy with the state of modern I'd now want several cards banned even though not much has really changed for modern since then other than having a good standard to conpare it to. So many matchups in modern end up being "can you beat my sideboardcard" now, and I've really started to see these matches as a chore I have to finish before I actually get to go have fun and play the game I went to FNM for. I've been an exclusive modern player for so many years it is an odd realisation to look at a good standard and think "wait a minute, insta-losing to blood moon actually doesn't have to be 'just how it goes' at all!".
I want WotC to return to the turn 4 rule with a vengeance. I would not mind seeing a large list of bans, just straight up ending storm, tron, dredge, KCI and the likes. There are so many decks and cards in modern that solely exist to create non-games where the pre-sideboard game is basically irrelevant. They are much, MUCH more obnoxious than twin ever was which, although powerful, at least was a matchup where both players got to play cards and interact with eachother without needing enchantments out of the sideboard.
you would not mind seeing bans that wipe out decks representing probably 30% of the meta, leaving thousands of players with no deck? I'm sorry, that kind of just sounds like a crappy person. 'I don't personally like your deck, so I want you and everyone else who has fun the same way you do to lose thousands of dollars'. not everyone wants to play Jeskai control matchups every day. ikf you had your way and a huge number of us just lost our decks, we wouldn't be able to recoup enough value to play midrange or control, we would be forced to play budget or get out of Modern. There are decks I don't like, some bans I would like, but not stuff that turns an expensive deck into a pile of worthless trash, much less doing it to multiple decks. That's a problem I see with too many midrange or control players, you want the whole format to look like your deck, and anyone who doesn't want to or can't play like that shouldn't get to play at all.
Nov 27, 2018Melkor posted a message on Lightning Helix cards signed by Craig Jones. Value Drop/Rise?It really shouldn't impact them. Some people may not want to trade for or buy signed cards, some signatures may be valuable, especially after an artist dies, but most of the time it doesn't do much. I trade for signed cards the same as regular. I buy them for the right deal, same as regular. Most people don't care that much either way.Posted in: Card Authentication
Nov 26, 2018Posted in: ModernQuote from thnkr »You could provide numbers, if you tested extensively. This is important for us to recognize because we can often understand a person's motives when we observe their methods. If someone wanted to know truth about whether something is safe to unban, they would take the steps to find that truth. If they wanted to just assume that their conjecture is reliable enough, that their opinion is valid without testing it for validity, they would feel safe in just finding supporting evidence rather than assembling some sort of test for it, to check their bias'.
@Melkor, Is that the same case for every card that came off the ban list, or are we being selective with our samples to justify the argument?
So, if all we have from people being upset is opinions and conjecture, then the work put into that opinion justifies no more than a response of, "Noted."
GGT is the only rare I didn't mention that has been unbanned since Masters sets started, and that was never a card with the price and demand to sell $10 packs. Every other card to be unbanned since those high end sets started was common or uncommon. I don't need to cherry pick when the majority of the available data points back me up.
Nov 26, 2018Posted in: ModernQuote from thnkr »Seeing a disappointing amount of hyperbole and unbased conspiracy-talk in here I would have hoped that, in a game that rewards critical thinking, we would see more of that.
it's not baseless. it's not even really a conspiracy. Wizards is almost comically transparent in these choices. Cards that when unbanned would increase sales of the set they are in are primarily unbanned right before a reprint, usually to sell an otherwise pathetic product. if Wizards can't make moneyfrom it, they won't do it. Eldrazi Wintr did not end because they cared about the players, it ended because it was going to hurt tournament attendance. Jace was not unbanned when it became clear he was fine for Modern, he was unbanned when they realized their masters set with Jace was trash and wouldn't sell otherwise. we do think critically, we observe patterns and draw conclusions. Look at AV, Bitterblossom. it's not a conspiracy theory, it's observation of blatant actions
Nov 25, 2018My big thing with the helmets. Horns are fine if there is a story reason, trophiesfrom the Minotaur Ward. Aside from that, no horns just looks cooler. Horned helmets have been super silly since Bugs Bunny got to themPosted in: The Rumor Mill
