The End of an Era

    Hey Everyone,

So I recently did an overview of the availability to play modern in the SE Houston Area. I checked with Asgard, Montag, Empire, Strike Zone, and Gerard's. Asgard, Montag, and Empire all said they had tried to do regular modern tournaments, but they never fired consistently, so they canceled them. Gerard's does modern at 8pm on Wednesday night, unfortunately that will never work with my work schedule. To be able to play I would really need the tournament to be on Fri, Sat, or early Sunday.

So my quandary is it even worth it to invest in modern if there will not be a place to play regularly that would work for me? I thought perhaps just maybe waiting to see if a scene develops at any of the above stores over the next year, but how likely is that given our area's lack of strong interest in modern. I have pretty much figured if the chance of playing modern here is so low, then I will probably move my cards towards commander to play casually on the weekends and maybe consider doing modern on MTGO.

Anyone else have any better luck? What do you guys think I should do given the situation?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this and I appreciate your input.

So I could really use a few folks input on my upcoming deck decision.

I have settled on either playing G/R Tron or Grixis Delver for the foreseeable future. I would like to have both, but current budget won't allow it.

I like Tron for its inevitable late game with a good control and jund/junk matchup; but fear its issues with infect/burn/fast aggro and combo (particularly twin). I guess I could slowly pickup the cards for U/W Tron for some variability and improved matchups if G/R is unfavored.

I like Delver for its versatility and generally 50/50 matchups; but for it I worry about G/R tron, podless pod, and b/w tokens.

I really don't know my local meta, but it would be safe to assume it would be a competitive reflection of the national scene. I am very comfortable with both types of strategies.

What I am particularly looking for is a competitive deck that will serve me well over time. What are your recommendations?

If you do recommend tron, should I wait for MM15 to pick up the karns, emrakul, and hopefully a spellskite reprint?

Thank you all for your time and consideration.

    Hello,

I could really use some help in making a choice for a deck to settle into for the foreseeable future. I mostly play in local events in and around the Houston, Texas area, but would like to be able to compete in a larger event if it came nearby. My local metagame is fairly diverse with the following distribution:
    2-3 RUG or UWR Delver
    1-2 BUG Delver
    1 Miracles
    1 Stoneblade
    1 Shardless
    1 ANT
    1 Dredge
    2-3 Jund
    1 Affinity
    1-2 SnT/Sneak and Show
    1 Death and Taxes
    1 Elves

I currently have Shardless BUG built (I am missing 3 duals which I intend to acquire over time). I was able to acquire TNNs before the price went up. Here is my dilemma: I am torn between keeping Shardless and also having the ability to play Team America (both with or without TNN) or taking my recently acquired goyfs and zendikar fetches to get the ONS fetches, tundra, scrubland, and karakas to play Esper deathblade w/TNN or Stoneblade w/TNN or taking everything and trading into a complete miracles list.

Given the meta I have and looking for a deck that I can play long-term with and have the opportunity to do well what would you recommend? Overall I know I will enjoy each deck, in the end I always love playing the deck that had multiple lines to victory and rewards tight play.

Thank you all for the assistance. I look forward to being a member of the legacy community for many years to come.

Ok so I have narrowed my decision down to shardless or esper stoneblade. I have been scouring the boards and many sites to make this decision. With my meta being so varied but having a good amount of tempo and jund, I lean toward shardless with TNN but I can't shake the appeal of a better combo matchup, DnT, and aggro matchup that esper brings. Is my thinking correct? I would love to hear your thoughts. Will one deck stand the test of time better than the other?

So I have been working my way towards playing legacy having recently acquired several of the cards towards playing Shardless BUG and also have some prior cards that would allow me to switch into deathblade or UWx Blade as well.

I need help in planning what to acquire for the decks over time. My biggest question is what is most likely to go up in price the fastest, such that I would save the most money in my long-term acquisitions.

Here is the list of what I am missing:

Need for just for Shardless BUG:
    4x Tarmogoyf

Need for Shardless and UWx Blade:
    3x Polluted Delta
    3x Flooded Strand
    3x Wasteland
    3x Underground Sea
    2x Tundra
    2x Bayou
    2x Tropical Island
    4x Thoughtseize

    Need just for UWx Blade:
    1x Karakas
    2x Vendilion Clique
    1x Force of Will
    2x Snapcaster Mage
    1x Scrubland
    4x Dark Confidant

So to complete Shardless first need:
    4x Tarmogoyf
    3x Polluted Delta
    3x Wasteland
    3x Underground Sea
    2x Tundra
    2x Bayou
    2x Tropical Island
    4x Thoughtseize

Or to complete UWx blade first need:
    3x Polluted Delta
    3x Flooded Strand
    2x Wasteland
    3x Underground Sea
    2x Tundra
    1x Bayou
    1x Tropical Island
    4x Thoughtseize
    1x Karakas
    2x Vendilion Clique
    1x Force of Will
    2x Snapcaster Mage
    1x Scrubland
    4x Dark Confidant

What would be your recommendation? Right now I am using extra basics and shocks for the duals until I get replacements. I really appreciate the help and look forward to being a member of the legacy community.
