I like how outside of "tuck was unintuitive when compared to regular killing or exiling", his arguments are basically "we can ban problem cards" and "people will find answers eventually".

But isn't that Wizards answer for their eternal formats? "We build with Limited and Standard in mind. If a card becomes a problem in Modern or Legacy we will address it there. If a card becomes a problem in Commander the RC will ban it." (Not an actual quote but basically what MaRo says in his Tumblr)

That's what makes me super mad though. The RC don't ban problem cards. Hermit Druid has been out and terrible for years, Ad Nausium and Doomsday exist and plague tables, Cyclonic Rift is a card only blue and answer and has hordes of people wanting to ban it, as does Dead Eye Navigator. Sol Ring has been included in every commander pre-con for god's sake. That card is comparable in power to a mox. Don't even get me started on Mana Crypt. (The combination of which has let me hard cast Kozilek turn 2 more than once, or play crucible of worlds and strip mine turn 1 many times.)

It's just plain untrue. I've never heard of obsidiandice before but I can't help but dislike him now that my first introduction to him was this BS pile of opinions stated like they're facts. (I've never once thought tuck was unintuitive for example.)

Honestly this rule change has made me lose most of my passion for the format. The RC is so out of touch with their player base it hurts. I hope wizards decides to take over, because the RC has lost my trust and respect.

To preempt potential arguments: So far I've yet to talk to anyone who liked the idea. (including 3 people who have played for more than 10 years and quite a few others with less experience.) We can't ignore it however because we play at a card shop and even though the management disagrees with the change he feels it's unfair to have house rules because it would be off putting to new players or require changes to their decks for our 1 store specifically.)

Mono-green might like it, but there are a lot of really, really good green cards so this doesn't make the cut. It's notquitegoodenoughstuff. 4/10.

I've disagreed with the RC in the past, but this is super annoying. I've completely lost faith in them. They refuse to ban cards like Sol Ring and Cyclonic Rift yet basically ban Hinder and Spell Crumple? That's a decision I'll never agree with. I'm almost ready to just switch formats.

Yep. Bant doesn't wanna go fast. I use a lot of flash, lightning greaves and maybe akroma's memorial.

Seriously though, try flash. I've got such an insanely high across the board winrate in games where people underestimate how good leyline of anticipation or vedalken orrery is and let them live. 10/10 would land go again.

Pauper gold! Need I say more? Okay. 8/10 in the right pauper decks.

Heh. Pulled out 2/2 wins against a Kallia deck that plays geddon both games. Once because it was 1v1 and I Bant charmed their general so they could try and slow it down and once because I and another guy used ramp spells early. I held one in my hand the second game, and luckily drew into like 3 the first. Nothing like hardcasting an Omniscience less than 10 turns after geddon, especially when you missed 3 land drops.

As a note: I removed Serra Ascendant for Vengeful Archon. T1 Serra Ascendant drew too many groans for me to play in any deck but my most competitive, where it now lives.

For some reason I don't play this. I guess the lack of exile not pairing up well versus gods and that most of my decks that can use it have better/different choices. Either way solid 8/10.

1/10 Garbage. IF you kill someone with a Uril with it (because he's lethal with most things.) you they better yell "bad touch."

Vanish into Memory: This card is so insanely good. If you use it on a general 99% of the time they'll just send it to the general zone for fear of you stifleing the delayed return trigger and having their general exiled for the remainder of the game. (Which is a fairly good way of dealing with it. :p)

I can't remember the exact terms and conditions, but even when you return a creature to your general zone, it can come back to the battlefield form your general zone in cases like this. You return it to your general zone and then they can return it. After all it does not say return it from exile, it says return it, it does not specify from which zone. So stifle all you want, Vanish into memory is just a good draw spell for 4, if there is a big enough creature on the field, an then an extra 1 to not discard soon after.

I've gotten mixed responses from various judges on that. It's great either way, but most people assume that it's either exile and risk a stifle or move to general zone and need to recast.

Just wanted to pimp two of my favorite spells in the format.

Bant Charm: This is literally the best removal spell in the format, and probably top 5 instants overall. The utility is insane and tucking a general can be one of the most painful plays in existence.

Vanish into Memory: This card is so insanely good. If you use it on a general 99% of the time they'll just send it to the general zone for fear of you stifleing the delayed return trigger and having their general exiled for the remainder of the game. (Which is a fairly good way of dealing with it. :p)

Even if you can't you get a huge tempo swing and a lot of cards. Tajic will net you at least 5 cards as long as you waited for him to swing. (More if he's equipped.) and Khemba will almost certainly have a bunch of gear to make you gain a lot of positive card advantage.

Try both if you're in the colors. You won't be disappointed.

I'd play it in decks where the general has double strike most or all of the time. At that point it's pretty crazy, especially because they can't see it coming. 6/10 in the right deck. Maybe 7.

    Quote from TheEndIsNear »
She's on par with Prophet of Kruphix. She probably will not get banned.

    She is targeted though.

You're going to hard a hard time targeting Narset without Glaring Spotlight. :p (Which is underplayed in a lot of control builds. Tons of utility in the ability to protect your guys or alpha strike and target hexproof while waiting for the perfect chance.)

Narset probably won't be banned though. If you counter her once or twice she'll be almost out of the game if the deck is centered around her, and if it's not then she's hardly the problem. You're almost never going to play her before t4, so everyone will have at least 3 mana to counter you with. Not to mention that some cards like Elesh Norn, Pestilence and Sheoldred can make it impossible to use her while they're on the field.)

I'll leave the warhammer reference to someone who knows what they're talking about. Bad card is bad. 1/10.

I can see it getting play in pauper. If you cast your general and I can put him on top of your library, I basically just got a timewalk for 3 mana. What are you going to do, not (maybe)play a land, recast your general and pass?

God I love blue. Evil Lol

    Quote from Elvish Sniper »
I think they should be distinguished. First of all, for flavor reasons. If Elephant Ambush made beast tokens, it loses a lot of its comedic appeal. Second, there are a lot of weird tribal support cards that would be weirdly changed if those creature types did. If all elephants became beasts, Elephant Graveyard would suddenly be able to regenerate Cavern Harpy and Marath, Will of the Wild.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying to erreta some creature types onto creatures where it makes sense, not remove creature types. Elephant Ambush still makes Elephants, but you also draw cards from Wirewood Savage. Because they're Elephant Beasts now instead of just Elephants.

There are plenty of knights who are not soldiers. Sir Ian McKellen is not a soldier. Being a knight just means you got accepted into an order of knighthood.

More generally, M:tG creature types do not capture the comprehensive properties of a creature, but its most prominent features. A person can be a warrior, a soldier, and a knight at the same time; the creature type that applies is the one that is most central to the identity.

I don't think there are any MTG knights that aren't soldiers, and even if there are you could just not add it to those ones.

I was reading an old "Ask Wizards" entry just the other day about this very topic. The creature type discussion can probably best be summed up by this line by Brady Dommermuth, Magic Creative Director at the time:
Whether or not a particular made-up creature such as a Gargadon gets lumped in with Beasts or gets something more specialized depends on many factors, not the least of which is its overall coolness.

So, why are knights and soldiers different? There are some game reasons, but a lot of it is just because having those different types is cool.

Q: "Is there a conscious effort to avoid adhering too closely to 'real world' animal classifications, in the same way that real world references are avoided in flavor text? The February 9th question brought up Giant Solifuge, but as a whole there are quite a few generalizations in terms of creature types. I understand that it isn't necessarily in the best interests of the game to create a lot of 'one of' creature types (like Octopus), but is there an attempt to generalize things as 'Magic Insects'? Some others I can think of are Horseshoe Crab, which is actually a chelicerate (as are arachnids). Bane of the Living, Clickslither, Ferropede, Gigapede, Lithophage, and Mortipede all seem to be closer to myriapods (centipedes and millipedes). Plague Fiend seems rather solphugid-like, and Gleancrawler seems more like a crustacean. Also, is the decision of creature type made before the artwork is commissioned, or based to some degree on abilities and the art?"
    --Ryan, USA

A: From Brady Dommermuth, Magic Creative Director:

"Big question, Ryan. Creature types are tricky; they’re the one creative element on a card for which there’s a direct mechanical function. In all other parts of the card, the mechanical aspects and the creative aspects operate more or less independently; not so with creature types.

"To me your question is really about where to draw the line on a particular creature type. For example, maybe Hound and Wolf could be unified under a Dog type. Or maybe all Hounds, Wolves, Hyenas, Jackals, Dingos, and Foxes could be unified under a Canine type. Then, if you’ve got Canine, you could have Feline, Bovine, Ursine, Equine, Ovine, and Porcine. And then you could have Primates, Cetaceans, Rodents, Ungulates . . . aw, heck, how about just a Mammal type? I’m joking, of course, but the point is that we don’t want too much taxonomical complexity or too many scientific terms in Magic. Whether or not a particular made-up creature such as a Gargadon gets lumped in with Beasts or gets something more specialized depends on many factors, not the least of which is its overall coolness.

"As for the second part of your question, artwork often influences the decision about a creature’s type, mechanics less often. But when mechanics do have influence, they exert a strong influence. Some examples are Spider, Shade, Specter, Sliver, and Slith (hey, why do they all begin with “S”?)."

This answer is extremely good and informative! While I might not agree with the logic completely, it's nice to at least see this addressed in some manner by wizards.

Overall I'm not really surpised most people disagree with me, but seeing your opinions and ideas is interesting. That's why I opened this thread. To all those that have or will reply: Thanks!

Also sorry for placing it in EDH. When you said that I was like... huh? Then I looked and realized you were right. My mind was blown. :p
