    Violent Ultimatum

How much worse than Decimate do you think this is in this format?

I dunno, it's a good answer to a Superfriends deck, since it targets permanents. But there are better options in each of those colors, perhaps cheaper overall. And if you pick a permanent that somehow becomes an illegal target...well, hope you weren't too attached to that 7 mana you wasted.

Just wanted to mention that the spell only fizzles if all targets become illegal. Look at the ruling on Hex(Gatherer) for proof. (Or the rules.) This wasn't how it originally worked IIRC, but that was before my time.

Have it in my Derevi Deck. Don't care if they remove Derevi, and multiple Derevis is really, really broken. (Especially since he has a static effect and an ETB effect.

    Also the CMC seems good.

My experience with my Edgar deck is mainly me losing to combo. I’ll get all my opponent’s life totals down to single digits, and then one of them combos off.

If you're not focusing down 1 opponent at a time you're making a mistake. Aggro decks that try to spread the love post really pathetic results.

Kill the biggest threat, then the next, then the last one most games. Sometimes ease is more important than threat, but if they're combing all their pants should be pretty far down stopping your aggro.

I've given and taken Wood Elves many times before with this. My favorite use was when some madman used it on a Prophet of Kruphix and made everything go crazy. (Back when she was legal. RIP.)

Tragic Slip is one of my favorite cards. It and Snuff Out have won me more games vs a nasty Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind control/combo deck than I can count. Nothing better than their flying epic dragon tripping on a sky banana with Ophidian Eye on the stack.

Yeah for aggro going B/W is the call.

Alternatives to Athreos (Who is very, very good) are Teysa, Orzhov Scion for removal and resiliancy to wipes (Darkest Hour is also a thing) and Tymna the Weaver for keeping your hand full and getting 2 cards in the command zone. (even if the other is Ravos, Soultender to keep it two colors.)

I mean I think I have good threat prioritization, and I tend to play well versus Edgar.

The thread is about people hating your Edgar deck, and my point is just that when all other things are even you do have an emblem from the start of the game that can only be permanently removed with your loss or their win.

It's also about when the board state is empty you do have the ability to rebuild quicker than many other fair decks.

Do they go overboard? Maybe. But there are reasons to focus you when everything else seems even.

It just doesn't seem rational. There are ways to deal with any problem in MtG for the most part and Edgar is no different. You might not be able to get rid of that eminence ability, but there's a lot of ways to play around it. Rakdos Charm costs 30 cents if that, there's untold variations of fog effects, tax-for-attacks, and if you want to turn his ability off entirely there's Containment Priest, Hallowed Moonlight and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. Or if you can't afford that there's Aether Snap, Illness in the Ranks, Toxic Deluge, Dissipation Field and untold number of lock down effects - Silent Arbiter or Crawlspace, Blinding Angel, there really are plenty of ways to mitigate Edgar's army, and a lot of them are cheap. I guess I'm saying there's tons of options, and as an Edgar player it's by no means a done deal that I win. I've also gone up against strong Edgar decks and beaten them, too. They're quick and strong, but there's no way I see them as overpowered.

Here's the thing. Most decks don't pack specific token hate cards, and a well built Edgar deck can keep a decent board presence while keeping a large hand. If you board-wipe he rebuilds twice as fast and you've cleared the path.

As far as I'm concerned there's exactly one solution all my decks pack to Edgar in the command zone, and that's bringing his life total to 0, so while he's not 100% my choice every time, I tend to kill him when I can.

Infinitely better in modern where certain decks fold to it and a hexproof critter with over 3 toughness. In commander we all pack enchantment removal so it's garbage because after it dies you're still at 1 life.

Hold on... a meta that runs a Vorinclex whinging about someone playing Edgar?

No case to answer for you my friend.. play it and smirk away when it beats down

EDH is a social game. If he's being asked not to play it and keeps playing it, they'll just stop playing with him. The fact that I need to explain this to you is pretty hilarious.

Also remember we're only getting his side of the story. Look at it this way: They're playing Vorinclex, 5c Goodstuff and other powerful decks and STILL asking him not to play this. His deck is probably crushing them pretty often, or they probably wouldn't complain.

Honestly the Eminence ticks me off enough to make me want to hate him out even past what his threat level is. Derevi and Orolo are bad enough, and now we've got a guy who can make 1/1 tokens of the most relevant creature types even if his spells are countered?

If at the very least the tokens were "1/1 thrall tokens" then I'd be a little more okay, but freaking vampires?

It's less about the power level and more that I hate his Eminence to hell.

Better than city of brass imo.
In my experience, not having the right colors to cast spells I need makes me lose more than the incidental damage from City of Brass.

City of brass adds up to 5-6 damage over a game easily, which is a very significant amount. If you're playing a super cut-throat combo kill meta then yeah it's worse, but in metas where dying to fair combat is a real threat it's way better. I've only once or twice had a problem with not having the right color, as opposed to the many, many games I've won with 5 or less life remaining and this on the field.

Worst case scenario, you can use this to fulfill the colorless component of spells. That's really not much of a worst case scenario. Cheap as chips, too.

You can't tap this without a colored land across the table. You can only add a color their lands could produce, and colorless isn't a color.

Then again if you're playing against Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, Kozilek, the Great Distortion, and Karn, Silver Golem I suggest you assume the position. Shocked

Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is really strong. I personally love Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur. (Cyclonic Rift with him down is BRUTAL.) These are both pretty expensive because you need tons of artifact ramp, but can be insanely powerful. Just having the threat of playing Jin is super scary and players will always be on the back-foot. It's best if you've got some free counter-spells to get Jin down without people having a good chance to respond.

If you want something fairly cheap and extremely dirty, grab an Edric, Spymaster of Trest deck with a bit of counter-magic, a bunch of super cheap creatures (Cloud of Faeries) and some extra turn effects.
