Man, I got to get on MTGO. I'm starting to think that's the only way I'm going to get better.
Don't feel too bad Khaospawn. I've been on MTGO for about 6 months now and still feel like I'm miles behind everyone else. Of course I stick around the practice room most of the time. I neeed to man up and actually get in some DEs.
Very nice article Khaospawn. I've been playing magic for a little over a year and have always liked red decks. Although my skill level has improved quite a bit in that time, I still have the bad habit of netdecking a lot of my stuff. Reading deck articles like this has started to give me motivation to finally step out and start trying my own stuff and see if I can't make it work. Thank you and all the other guys on this forum for that.
Good job rujasu! I got to play against Reid Duke and Caleb Durward in Denver and it can be quite nerve wracking to go against a pro. Nice work on keeping your emotions under control and playing your game.
The UWr decks I run into MD Geist and thundermaws. I guess we are talking different decks. I'm more concerned with the aggro/removal variant whereas it seems some of y'all are discussing more control oriented. The ones I face actually side out sphinx post board because its too slow.
I guess I was missing y'all's points but UWr that focuses on control MD is an easier matchup IMO then the UWr aggro with removal.
Yeah I would say that most of the flash decks I run into seem to be more on the control side of things so that's where I'm coming from I guess. The aggro versions do require a different approach.
I have also been feeling the pull to try volleys in my list again. Guess I'll try to jam 2-3 in and see how it works. I did get to try the GoodStuffRed list a couple of weeks ago at my FNM, so much fun. Hounds do tons of work in that list for sure.
So yeah I'm getting super pumped about laying down some boros beatdown! I was wondering with the heavy human theme in boros if Zealous Conscripts just becomes the better five drop to top our curve. Just seems like it goes better with Champion of the Parish, can be cast with caverns, and can lead to blowouts just as good if not better than hellkite. Guess only time will tell.
Well done! What changes (if any) would you make to the deck? Were your losses caused by any particular failings of the deck, or just being outplayed/outdrawn?
Thanks for sharing
Well Z one thing I might want to try is adding a third Bonfire. I just didnt hardly see it at all. Maybe it's just better to go back to mizzium mortars I'm not sure. Most of my losses were from bad draws. Against the Flash deck I had 2 Ultimate Price in hand and took 3 turns to draw into black sources of mana. Against Caleb and his G/W deck I think I kept too slow of a hand and was unable to push enough damage through before he got his trostani, thragtusk, resto angel gain a million life engine going so there's that too. Funny thing is I had triple aristocrat and a hellkite swinging in but his lifegain was so severe I coundn't keep up. Just gotta roll with the punches sometimes I suppose
Hey what's up everyone! Been awhile since I posted anything but here goes. Just got home from Denver and my first grand prix and boy was it a blast. I went 3-4-1 in Legacy playing Burn so not that great but what can you do when you run into 3 Countertop decks in a row. On Sunday I entered into the Standard event and put up much better results going 5-2 and placing 12th out of 80 players. Here is the list I ran:
It was a very long weekend so sorry if I can't remember all the details but here is a shorthand version of my matches:
0-2 loss vs U/W/R Flash
2-0 win vs Jund
2-0 win vs G/W Aggro
1-2 loss vs G/W Midrange
2-0 win vs U/W Humans
2-1 win vs 4-Color Control
Round 7 autowin because my opponent didn't show up (seriously who does that in the final round, oh well I'll take it )
Anyway the deck ran really well the entire time. HHF did a lot of work and I won 2 of my games off of his fling ability. One note on my round 4 loss against the G/W deck was it happened to be played by Caleb Durward so it was a tough match but I was also very excited to get to play against a pro.
I am really looking forward to laying down some boros beatdown Although with the gruul lands coming into play it's hard to ignore the potential of rancor in a red deck.

Have to agree with this. Been trying the card out again in my SB and forgot just how good this can be in specific situations.
