    @Creatures

The optimal configuration would be four between Vendilion and Obstructionist between main and side. I only have three spots, so I go with two Cliques that are more valuable in postboard games. In g1, even if you’re facing a tough matchup, you plan to win by conboing out most of the time. Postboard, in 50% of the matches I go full Control route and only keep 1-2 Living Ends, hardcasting stuff while I remove their threats. So, it would be useful playing more.

Problem: you cannot afford to cut early cyclers for this. Cyclers convert themselves into lands, and we are a 21 Lands Control. Eleven cc1 cantrips (cyclers) is already on the low side, so it’s totally impossible to go down another slot. Glassdusk, by the way, is by no mean a bad creature: I won plenty of game thanks to having two of them in play alongside a pair of Curators, then the turn after I transmute for Explosives (or hardcasting another Hulk) and swinging for 16 with the opponent impossibilitate to block (cuz also flying is kind of an evasive skill). I would test them more, if I were you.

    @MassRemovals

Settle the Wreckage and similar are unplayable here, unless we #severely# reconfigurate the manabase. Double white IS an issue. Try to compare this deck to UW Control, and you’ll find out by yourself. Engineered Explosives is too strong, on thand other hand, to shave one copy of it. The ability to cast the first in the early game, then transmute for another in the mid late is the reason why it is so strong in this deck. We can even cast it for three, thanks to Bojuka Bog. I would play a third before going back to one. It happens often that we use a Living End, the opponent builds another army, and we want mass removal that doesn’t provide him any creature from the grave. Well, there we are.

Yeah, I know about the early cyclers being converted into lands. Maybe the right number is 22 lands and we can think about making more consistent to hit the double white on turn 4-5. And that´s exactly my concern about EE, you clear the board, survive few turns, and then you go AF+LE, getting back their creatures. This is why I said 1 Settle the Wreckage + 1 Hallowed Burial (I do like Oust btw). For now, I´ll go with 1 EE + 1 Tormod´s Crypt MD.

Coming back to creature´s discussion, you are probably right with the Hulk (Street Wraith is nearly unplayable in this iteration of deck in my opinion), but I just feel it too weak. It happened to me before, while playing UB with Architects, I was always shaving up copies of the card (after few matches) on Nimble/Vendilion´s favour, in a more control-ish way.

    @MissionBriefing

I spent my posts in the last two pages talking about it. I don’t want to say the same thing all over again. In short: it’s a graveyard-using Spell in a deck against whom the opponent is going to sb a lot of graveyard hate. Other than that, it seems very winmore.

I´m just saying about playing 1-of maindeck, which means that it can be sided out for G2 and G3. Briefing´s interaction with PtE early game, and LE or AV in the lategame with As Foretold out looks pretty neat rather than just like a "winmore". Worths my testing at least, it might happen that I will discard it after few games. I´m aware about your comments on previous pages of the thread, we just have different opinions on the card, and that´s completely fine. You took an UW approach that nobody else "thought" about, or I should say, you put it into paper and gave us some inputs. It´s the same kind of thing for me here.

    @Sideboard

Timely is meant for Burn, Dredge and Jeskai variants. The first is our worse matchup, and needs to be fixed cause it’s kinda popular atm, while it’s also extremely useful against the other two for obvious reasons. Most of the time, the only way you lose is with the opponent throwing a bunch of Burn spells at you (Dredge fits into this) and you need to have a proactive answer, other than reactive cards such as counterspells, that can put you in difficult spots if you’re tight on mana.

Yeah, Burn is a thing. But in Modern, trying to improve the worst matchup (I´m not saying improving bad matchups, just the ones nearly unwinnable), is not where I want to go while playing a deck like this. I´m not saying to give up, just that 3 copies seems excessive in my eyes, and those slot(s) could be used on a different way.

Thanks for your inputs Smile and keep up the good work. I find this deck incredibly fun to play!

    Cheers!

    Hello there!

I'm giving a try to your list, @BloodyRabbit_01 :)The PtE approach is just what I felt that this deck needed. And I have to say that the manabase seems pretty smooth and well shaped, but I don't see the main closed yet. Personally, I don't like the Glassdusk Hulk, I've never been advocate of playing Architects of Will in the UB version, and the Hulk is even weaker. It might look a bit extreme, but I'd rather play the second Vendilion in main and probably going up for the second (or third) Nimble Obstructionist. Both can always be used as an early threat (pressure) and/or chump-block big creatures until you stabilize.

Now that we are playing PtE I would probably squeeze 1-2 Mission Briefing in the main (not tested yet), and I'm not still sure about the second EE, I will have a better opinion on that after I run some leagues. Cards I've been thinking about, aligned with the PtE-Oust philosophy and in a Dredge meta (not necessarily complementary), are Settle the Wreckage and Hallowed Burial (one main, one side). Also, and it might look radical and fool, 1-of Peer Through Depths main.

For me, these are the sideboard cards I would always sleeve before leaving home. As you said, there still room for improvement this aspect of the deck:
    2 Dispel
    2-3 Negate
2 Oust (seems strictly better than Condemn, but I still want more instant speed answers or a mass removal)
2-3 Timely Reinforcement (I need to face Burn more, 3 copies looks like overkill, and being at sorcery speed doesn't appeal to me much. We are supposed to be an instant speed deck (control) with an "oops, I win" button.)
    2 Celestial Purge
1-2 Tormod’s Crypt (being able to tutor it with Tolaris is exactly what I want)

What do you think about going this more control-ish way?

I'll let you know how I'm doing once I gather some more inputs and data from my games.

    Cheers!

Spirits are a very bad matchup, in my case I would side as follows:

-2 pentad prism: becase spirits do not play land disruption and play stony silence, moreover pentad is very bad against spell queller because if you kill queller, pentad enters with 0 counters.

-2 sleight of hand: worst than serum visions and 6 cantrip is usually fine, I do not want to cantrip in another cantrip so much

-1 spoils of the vault (I maintain 2 spoils at main becuase I play 3)

-1 phyrexian unlife: because 4 is too redundant and it could be countered by queller, however, I am not siding out more copies because is good against thalia or damping sphere

    +2 fatal push

    +1 slaughter pact

    +1 echoing truth

+2 toughtseize: It could discard everything: geist, queller, counter, stony,... and mausoleum on the play. Usefull before combo too in case your opp. has an aether vial and queller in hand to counter lightning storm or lab maniac and you already used the slaugher pact.

I really don't like Bontu's here, but maybe deserves a try, however, its very hard to cast having mausoleum wanderer or thalia in play, too much mana, and 1 turn without playing is too much, I preffer to finish the game as soon as possible using an early spot removal.

Suscribe your sideboarding here point by point. I play 2 Spoils 1 Teachings, so I take out a second Phyrexian or a Pact. I always feel like I want to kill one of their creatures or play a TSZ before going of at instant speed Wink

Anyone still play the Glittering Wish version?

    Me! Grin

But just at FMN-level and sometimes in MTGO only for fun.

    This is my current build:

Are you willing to give this version a try once again? Grin Grin

I am willing to give it a try for the first time!

Why do you mainboard a Bring to Light when you can always wish for it?

Why do you play 4 Serum / 2 Sleight? I have always found that Sleight is the much better card turn 1 because you can dig deeper for Lotus Bloom

The reason to mainboard 1x Bring to Light is because it serves as a functional 5th Ad Nauseam. It can be also found via EoT with Peer Through Depths or scried with a Serum Visions. I didn't run the real numbers (yet), but from my experience I can tell you that in almost every single game you will open a hand with at least one copy of 'the expensive piece of the combo'. Hence, quite frequently your only concern will be to get an Angel's Grace or Phyrexian Unlife somehow (and that's why you have to run 4x Phyrexian Unlife). Here, among other situations, is when I rather prefer to have a Serum Visions than a Sleight of Hand, just because you see 3 cards instead of 2. It's true that they accomplish different purposes, but this version is overall one turn slower and much more resilient against the Modern fiel. And in this scenario, finding a Lotus Bloom with your Sleight of Hand in turn one isn't that relevant. Furthermore, your success relies in casting a Pentad Prisms effectively rather than suspending a Lotus Bloom one turn before.

    Ok, now some basic numbers:
    - In general terms, 9 out of your 60 work as 'the expensive piece of the combo' (4x Ad Nauseam + 4x Glittering Wish + 1x Bring to Light). Simple math: 60/9=6,67. Put it into words: your opening hand will most likely contain one piece of the combo.
    - It runs 8 'white pieces of the combo', which give us: 60/8=7,5. Put it into words: your opening hand won't always have this part of the combo, so you'll have to find it.

Additionally, and this are just corner cases...

Have you ever find yourself with tons of mana but now way to use it efficiently?
    - Remember that you can Bring to Light into Angel's Grace (and cast Ad Nauseam if you have in hand during your turn)
    - Remember that you can Glittering Wish into Wargate into Phyrexian Unlife
    - Or just get your Dragonlord Dromoka to make the dirty job... and have your opponent Silence' during your turn.

This is just my reasoning, and I might be wrong, but it is sooo sweet when you Glittering Wish into an unfair auto-win card against some decks... :evill

    On a completely different topic...

What are your thoughts between running Duress or Thoughtseize in your SB, guys?

I've been debating myself lately about which one is better, but I don't seem to get to any conclusion...

The discard slot in my SB (always 2x) has been changing constantly due to either MTGO and IRL experiences. For instance, in MTGO I use to play Duress, but in last FNMs I played TSZ, due to its versatility being able to take out creatures as well. Yesterday I had a situation in MTGO where I Duress my opponent in turn 1 and I saw: 1 Steam Vents, 1 Baral, 2 Pyrectic Ritual, 1 Manamorphose, 1 Gifts Ungiven, 1 Serum Visions; and I wasn't completely sure if taking Baral would have been the best choice.

    What do you think?

There's a lot i'd like to bring in against DS but am wary about boarding in too many cards.

    I'd like to bring in:
    4x Leyline of Sanctity
    2x Ethereal Haze
    1x Path to Exile
    1x Damnation

which is 8 cards and i'm worried could result in too much disruption to finding my combo or enough mana. which of the above would you bring in / leave out?

    Thanks in advance

    See my post above :p
NEVER BOARD OUT MORE THAN 6 CARDS AGAINST ANY MATCHUP!

By the way, I wouldn't play Damnation over Supreme Verdict, and NEVER against Stubborn Denial.decks

I'm not very comfortable with the fastlands and I remember why I dropped them. 6 temples feels fines, but fastlands are sometimes so akward. That's why I'm tossing between a stock list and my own list from event to event. Having the fetches feels smoother.

And LS to kill DS is just a classic move :p

I have the same feeling but about temples, and that's why I never play more than 4.

This is the manabase I'm gonna be testing now:
    4x Gemstone Mine
    2x City of Brass
    3x Darkslick Shores
    3x Seachrome Coast
    2x Temple of Deceit
    2x Temple of Enlightenment
    1x Island
    2x Plains
1x Nephalia Academy / Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth / Mikokoro, Center of the Sea / Tolaria West

    Any suggestions?

The Swan Songs seems great since it hoses our early problematic cards. Blood Moon, Stony Silence, Eidolon of Rhetoric and is an early counterspell which won't burn your pacts. Wish it could also counter Chalice of the Void though!

I think I like Bontu's Last Reckoning more than Supreme Verdict since I run only 7 fastlands (4 seachrome 3 darkslick 1 urborg). The urborg helps the Gemstone Mines and can be an early double black for Bontu which can be cast as early as turn 2 (against affinity or devoted druid decks) it also looks useful against eldrazi decks or fast creature decks. Has anyone tested this?

Has anyone tested 2 Gideon of the Trials in the sideboard. Seems great in suppressing DS if they only have 1 creature in play and even BGX since it can buy you at least 1 to 2 turns at the minimum. Anyone tried this as well?

Anyone care to share their sideboard plans for these popular decks?

    Grixis Death Shadow
    Devoted Counters Company
    Eldrazi Tron

All of them are "bad" matchups...

This is what I usually do against them

Grixis Death Shadow - In 4x Leylines, 2x Ethereal Haze (or Path to Exile/Fatal Push when I play them)
Devoted Counters Company - In 1x Slaughter Pact, 1x Supreme Verdict, 1x Echoing Truth
    Eldrazi Tron - In 1x Wear // Tear, 1 x Silence, 1x Echoing Truth

and Out like I posted above, Prism, Lotus, Pact of Negation and Sleight of Hand. Never all the copies, never more than 6 cards in total.

It really depends on your SB configuration, but those are cards that almost everyone run in their SB.

Btw any of you guys realized yet, that killing death shadow with a lightning storm from hand is very effective?

I won 3 online matches in the last week doing it. they generally go to 3-5 life, thinking they are totally safe, and then they lose to a LS+1 land, without the combo Grin

I've done that a couple of times as well Evil Lol

Thanks for that guide, Pablo. Using the 5-0 list that was posted a few pages back as guidance, the SB I settled on was:

    4x Leyline of Sanctity
    1x Echoing Truth
    1x Ethereal Haze
    1x Hurkyl's Recall
    2x Lingering Souls
    2x Path to Exile
    1x Silence
    1x Supreme Verdict
    2x Swan Song

Back when Jund was around and heavily played, I played L Souls and Grave Titan in the board, and found myself shaving copies of Unlife for them. Is this similar for the Shadow matchup, or do I just board out Prisms?

Kolaghan's Command = shave some Prisms and/or Lotus. The Jund version runs Abrupt Decay as well, so maybe it is not that bad idea to board out 1 Phyrexian Unlife. But you already know my opinion about this topic :p

And that's a good SB configuration, seems fine to me. Looking forward to try those Swan Song, though!

I haven't played this deck in a few months, (before the emergence of the Shadow decks)and I was playing the traditional 3 Spoils/5 Temples/8 Fastland build. Does anyone have a sample sideboard that they use and some rough sideboard plans for the more common matchups? (E Tron, Shadow, Company etc). I am always petrified of overboarding with this deck.

Am I right in thinking that it is generally right to shave some of the combo against DS in lieu of some sort of a backup plan? (Grave Titan/L Souls etc)

    Thanks.

Never side out even a single copy of Ad Nauseam nor Angel's Grace, remember that we are still playing combo!
Although, if you expect a heavy artifact/enchantment removal in G2 and G3 you can shave 1 Phyrexian Unlife, but only in the particular case that you are playing 4 copies MD. (NOTE: personally, I don't like to side out Unlifes, even though I play 4 copies MD, but this is a personal choice)

I typically side out Sleight of Hand, Pentad Prism, Lotus Bloom (on the draw), Pact of Negation and very rarely Spoils of the Vault and Mystical Teachings. And I NEVER side out all the copies.

    SB Sample:
    4x Leyline of Sanctity
    1x Supreme Verdict
    1x Wear // Tear
    1x Echoing Truth
    1x Slaughter Pact
and up to 6 cards of your preference

There are some people playing Lingering Souls as backup plan and to buy time against difficult pairings, some others play Ethereal Haze (as me) over Path to Exile or Fatal Push, and even Hurkyl's Recall is a MUST for others... This is up to you Smile Lately I have been toying with Duress and Silence, and I still have to try Swan Song, but the sample I posted above has been with me since forever. I'm pretty happy with it.

You can also go for the big dudes like Dragonlord Dromoka, Godhead of Awe and Grave Titan, but from my personal experience only Dragonlord Dromoka is worth to play.

I hope you'll find this guide useful! Wink

Dont say the deck is well positioned.

That is a lie. Please dont lie.

Hahahaha maaaan, don't get us wrong! We are not lying :p We are just sharing our personal performances with the deck recently.

Keep in mind that if this deck becomes a real Tier1 it will get eventually banned, and everyone here knows that.

So, that being said, "well positioned" we will never be, neither the deck to beat.

We have a poor Shadow.decks matchup along with CoCo and EldraTron a.k.a Chalices MD (among others). But Modern is an open format, and every single deck has a chance to shine :p

    Please don't cut our wings!

I have the same impression, guys.

The deck is performing pretty well even under the Shadow.decks dominance in the format. I consistently achieve 4-1 and 3-2 records in MTGO without a problem (still working on getting a 5-0, though).

    Current SB configuration:

    4x Leyline of Sanctity
    2x Ethereal Haze
    1x Silence
    1x Duress
    1x Slaughter Pact
    1x Flaying Tendrils
    1x Echoing Truth
    1x Supreme Verdict
    1x Wear // Tear
    1x Godhead of Awe
    1x Dragonlord Dromoka

    Keep it up!

It's great to see you back to the deck again guys! Smile

    @TomCourtenay

I'm currently running a very similar list to yours in MTGO:

and I'm happy to see that you are (almost) in the Temple's train Grin

I've been trying both Nephalia Academy and Path to Exile in my SB for a couple of leagues, and from my personal experience I can tell that Nephalia didn't worked as I expected; but I'd never say that PtE is the wrong pick. I'm just testing Godhead and Dromoka over the spot removal right now, we will see how it goes.

I'm not particularly happy with the 4th Pact of Negation, and I'm playing Silence due to UR Storm is very popular in this platform. The rest is a standard SB suite Wink I like the Celestial Purge and the Timely Reinforcements you squeezed inside your SB, let us know how do them work for you! (and have fun tonight!)

    @tw0_fac3

These are the cards I've been thinking about lately:

Bontu's Last Reckoning as 1x in SB (replacing Flaying Tendrils)
Oketra's Last Mercy as 1x in SB
Solemnity as 1x MD and 1x SB

    Thoughts?

    @MaxeKu

The only way to play Solemnity would be going down on Gemstone Mine and Pentad Prism, and adding City of Brass probably.

    Maybe something like this:
    2x Gemstone
    3x City of Brass

    3x Pentad

    and 1x or 2x Solemnity

    What do you thing?
also to add an Urborg over the 3rd City?
