While I like the idea of multiple empties, I'd rather have them in the side where you can side out some D4s and play a more "dump my hand --> belcher or empty" plan. Skyshroud cutter, for me, has been irreplaceable. It enables more extra lines than extras of any of the other options.
So far im liking the second wild cantor, simply because i can cast it off a esg and gain another cull target (huge) that doesnt have restrictions and a drawback.... or it can transform into black mana, which is also huge as most of the time when i brick, i either have no buisness and no mana, or 2 black mana and no way to hit the 3rd for a d4.
Ill keep at it. I just hate that cutter. Really do. Maybe i play the deck different/inferiorly, which could entirely be true, but all my lines of play have involved him maybe once or twice.
Quote from NimI am not an expert in this deck by any means so take what I say with a grain of salt.
It really depends on your list of course (what version you're playing and so on) but from what I've seen often sideboarding is done by cutting the "Culling the Weak/Pact" part of the deck. So like:
-4 Culling the Weak
-4 Summoner's Pact
-1 Wild Cantor
-1 Deathrite Shaman
-1 Dryad Arbor
+4 Lotus Bloom
+4 Carpet of Flowers
+3 Thoughtseize
ect...
Xantid Swarm is a bit different though since it does provide "fodder" for Culling itself. So maybe Xantids could just replace the creatures (Cantor/Deathrite/Arbor) and something else gets cut for the Carpets. This is just some of what I've seen. Hopefully one of the more experienced players of this deck can give you (and I) a better answer.
Youre correct. While i am also no expert with the deck, the correct move is siding out the pact package as its too all-in , and folds to a single force or some well timed spell pierces.
So basically you side out your fast game, pacts, culling the weak, arbor, cutter, and maybe more, for carpets, which not only bait forces, but are single handedly your best source of mana vs blue decks.
You can also board in, as i do, 3 tomb of urami, as their removal will be sided out, and you can just develop four mana and crack it for a huge beater that has evasion. The only removal most decks dont remove is karakas, which is a pain, so hopefully they dont RTFC.
Also, with xantid swarms, ive found them lackluster, except for a match last night where they would have been key: against UW miracles. Dedicated control decks like that, and MUD, are our bane. So swarms really work against them, midrangey blue decks typically fold to the carpet tomb grind plan.
Also, against blue decks, you can do taiga and 2x empty the warrens, at least i do. Extra empties can be mox fodder to feed other empties. Like belcher and tes, an early empty can seal the deal, or buy you time to belch. I typically side out tendrils with the pact package since hitting the 10 storm without pacts and culling is much more difficult. And siding it out means theyll board in semiuseless hate. The taiga i run can be hit by belcher, land grant, and is another mana source for the grind plan
I also run 1cmc artifact and enchantment removal. Leyline and spheres are horrid to play against.
Typed from my phone. Hope this helps. -
