That might be nice, if everyone on the board was a college graduate, and everyone spoke and wrote completely proper English.
However, English is not the primary language of the vast majority of the world. It is the language of this forum, but somewhere upwards of 70% of the world does not even speak it, and the world's largest English-speaking population (India) doesn't write it unless they are among the higher-educated.
So, as long as they are getting the point across, a little understanding, please? -

Voxxen posted a message on They're really trying to kill the "EDH" name.Posted in: Commander (EDH)Quote from JivanmuktaPeople who are whining about WotC supporting commander suffer from a terminal case of hipsteritis.
This is really the long and short of it, no two ways about it.
WotC supporting EDH has been the best thing to happen to the format since its inception. We have more new cards to play with from specialty sets, more people know about the format, whatever name they refer to it by, and in general development does a lot more pandering to us (ie: we have more EDH playables in every set).
If you say you don't like this, you're just upset that your precious secret boys club has gotten bigger. Guess what, you're not special for playing EDH, its kind of been a thing for some time. Let other people enjoy it, and be happy that so many people are invested in its success now.
Just because something seems pushed once in a while doesn't mean they're ruining the format. Welcome to -every other format ever- -

DLH posted a message on Kitchen Table Casual is a Disgrace: How to Fix ItI'm honeslty suprised it took this long for this thread to be made. Kitchen Table Magic has been on a downward spiral for so long; I'm glad people are starting to get vocal about it. Attendance is at an all time low (only 3 people, including myself, showed up at my Kitchen Table last time!), there's literally never a judge around when you need one, and Wizard's doesn't pay any attention to us. People can play whatever broken Jank they want, take free mulligan's... Its absolute anarchy. There's also 0 (ZERO) prize support or incentive for winning. I've been playing competitively for years, through all the ups and downs, but I think its time I finally quit Kitchen Table for good.Posted in: Magic General -

LandBoySteve posted a message on Biggest travesty in magic? The biggest travesty in Magic is this thread. There is enough stupidity in it to stop a herd of bison in its tracks.Posted in: Magic General
On the RL. This may be the biggest "don't pay attention to that man behind the curtain" since the Wizard of Oz. We have a no reprint policy in place to keep WotC from reprinting cards that they probably had no intention of reprinting anyway.
Think I'm kidding?
Force of Will and Wasteland are two MAJOR Legacy staples that are like what, 16 years old right now and STILL haven't been reprinted?
Who's fooling who? But we buy into the "RL is killing Magic" bull **** because it's easy to buy into. It's a convenient scapegoat.
If the time ever came that WotC was SERIOUSLY hurting for money and realized or at least THOUGHT that they only way out was to reprint all these Legacy and maybe even Vintage staples, they'd do it in a HEARTBEAT.
What? You're telling me they'd rather go out of business than break a promise that has no legal binding whatsoever now that Hasbro has bought them out? If you believe that, you're more delusional than the people who believe that the RL actually MEANS anything. It's the scarecrow in the fields that, if the crows would just look around, would realize that the damn stupid thing is pointless.
When WotC wants to reprint the cards it needs to reprint to keep from going Chapter 11, they'll reprint them. You can take that to the bank.
The cards that are ridiculously expensive in Legacy and Vintage are ridiculously expensive because they're old and in short supply. NOT because some RL says they can't be reprinted. Again, I point you to FoW and Wasteland, which are in infinitely more supply than a lot of cards that cost less.
If you want the card, you pay for the card. The same thing holds true for Standard where we have larger print runs than ever. And with that, we have cards going for $25 or more. How insane is that?
The game is expensive not because of an RL. It's expensive because players want to be competitive and to be competitive they want the BEST cards. When everybody goes after the best cards, prices go up. It's called supply and demand. And the RL has ZERO effect on supply. Again, I point you to FoW and Wasteland.
So please, wake up and realize that the RL is not the cause of all your ills. When WotC is facing bankruptcy, trust me, that RL will mean NOTHING and all the cards you want reprinted will be reprinted. Of course the irony is, by that time, if things are that bad, very few people will be playing the game anyway and those cards won't be worth squat.
Aside from the RL stupidity, all the *****ing and complaining about power level or lack thereof, the beauty of this game has been the meeting of old and new.
In the beginning, spells rocked and creatures sucked. Now, the tables have turned and suddenly we have spells like Show and Tell, which was a $1 rare, actually worth something because of cards like Griselbrand and Emrakul, The Aeons Torn. Legacy now has decks that at one time would have been a pipe dream thanks to the shift in power.
Sure, it may suck for Standard, as far as some old timers, but for eternal formats, we now have the best of both worlds...great spells and great creatures. Now is the time to play Legacy.
Oh, and if it's the RL that's keeping you from doing that, don't worry.
That's just an illusion that the man behind the curtain wants you to believe.
Yeah, this thread is the biggest travesty of all. -

Artscrafter posted a message on Hey, I'm a rather inexperienced player, could you rate my deck please?Posted in: Casual & Multiplayer Formats
It helps if you break it out by card type. Also, you don't need individual card tags within a deck tag. Here's a quick example:Quote from DiscipIeI can't figure out how to make my deck formatting look good.
[ DECK=Legendary Combo Kill]
Artifacts (20)
20 Black Lotus
Sorceries (40)
20 Channel
20 Fireball

So the first things that stand out to me are that the deck is slightly oversized and there are a lot of cards where you're running 1 or 2 copies. I'm guessing this is based on what you have on hand, but my first recommendation would be to look at which cards are the best fits for your game plan.
Looking at the deck overall, you have a lot of ways to stall out the game and remove individual threats and a few big creatures you can finish out the game with, so I'll break things down into these categories.
Note: Most of my suggestions will be for incremental improvements to the existing deck. If you have a specific game plan in mind, that will help us tailor suggestions.
Creatures at 3 or less mana:
Vampire Nighthawk is easily your best card in this category. He discourages atatcks (which is an even better thing to do in multiplayer) and can get in for evasive lifelink damage if you don't really need a blocker. I would go to 4 of this guy if at all possible.
High Priest of Penance is a very nice stall tactic but that's about all it is without a lot more building around it. Pros: It comes in fairly early, and you can take out a bigger threat than the creature you blocked if you need to. Cons: Nearly useless on the offense, can't deal with flying. 3 copies is reasonable; I wouldn't run 4 because you don't necessarily want to get as many copies of this as possible during a game.
Doomed Traveler is a toss-up. It's played in decks that focus on token strategies, running things like Intangible Virtue and Lingering Souls. On its own, it's a decent staller for the early game (at worst, it chump blocks twice) but you're not going to see it consistently enough to be reliable for this purpose at one copy. If your playgroup runs a lot of really fast aggro decks I would consider adding more of these; if not, I'd cut it.
I would cut the Suture Priest. The passive bonus is nice but it probably won't make a really big impact. Plus, the life loss trigger tends to attract a lot of attention if you play multiplayer.
Cadaver Imp can be good but it's situational. If you happen to draw it in the late game after you've lost a big angel it can be useful, but there are better options by then. On its own, a 3 mana 1/1 flyer is pretty bad, particularly when compared to Vampire Nighthawk.
Screeching Bat is interesting but really awkward. Four mana is a lot to transform it and you have to do it before you know what you'll draw on your turn. Sure, it can be a 5/5, but by the time you've got that, your opponent probably has ways to deal with it, by blocking if nothing else.
Leonin Skyhunter is going to be iffy for whether you can cast it on turn 2 in a two color deck, and its usefulness goes down quickly as the game progresses.
Things I would consider running instead of the cuts:
Lingering Souls: This is one of the best early game cards for a BW deck that wants the game to go long. Four blockers with one card.
Vizkopa Guildmage: Both of the abilities can be very useful in this type of deck. If you've got Nighthawks online you can use the second ability to make them hit twice as hard. If you've got Serra Angels, they can get lifelink.
Creatures with CMC 4+:
Seraph of Dawn isn't bad, but Vampire Nighthawk is cheaper, as good on the attack and arguably better on defense. If you have ways to boost power then more flyers with lifelink are always good, but by itself it's one of the weaker cards in this position.
Serra Angel is a very solid option for this spot. Better creatures exist at this mana cost for decks with higher budgets or a more specific game plan, but a 4/4 with flying and vigilance is still something to be taken seriously. I would consider cutting the Archangel (yes it's one bigger, but seven mana is a lot harder to get to than five) for a third copy of this.
Deathpact Angel is a good one-of - situational and expensive but in the right matchup it can be hard to deal with.
I'm honestly not sure why Dearly Departed is even in here. You have four Humans in the deck and all of them want to hit the table early (and none benefit a lot from getting +1/+1.) Most decks I've seen that play this try to find a way to discard it early, which this deck doesn't have. If you want another flyer at this approximate cost and size, I'd suggest Requiem Angel since it supports the rest of your deck better.
Primal Clay is not very good without dedicated support. You have other cards that are better at each of the things it can be.
Guardian of the Gateless is a meta call but probably not very necessary unless your playgroup has a lot of token swarm decks.
Enchantments:
Holy Mantle is pretty expensive for what it does. Take a look at Spirit Mantle if you really want this kind of effect, but you probably don't need this at all. Your main win condition is creatures that are already hard to block.
Arrest, Pacifism, and Guard Duty: Eight spot removal spells for creatures that leave them on the table is likely to be too many. It also doesn't help you deal with problematic permanents that aren't creatures. If you can get them, Oblivion Ring is almost (but not quite) strictly better than Arrest, and Journey to Nowhere is usually better than Pacifism. I would try the deck with these cut to 4 Oblivion Rings and allowing your black spells to deal with creatures (see below.) The other option is that you could pack in even a few more of these enchantments and then run Sphere of Safety as well, to make yourself really hard to attack.
Gift of Orzhova: Lifelink is good, but flying is redundant on most of the creatures you would want to put this on. Vizkopa Guildmage will probably work better for this purpose in most cases.
Instants/Sorceries:
Shielded Passage: It can be useful to have a couple of effects like this if you're relying on a few big creatures, but you have to (a) have the card and (b) have the mana available at the time. You will probably do better by either having more cards that get your creatures back, so you don't have to have the response immediately (see below), or just having more threats or some draw spells so you're more likely to be able to replace the thing that gets hit with removal. (Sign in Blood is a good cheap draw option in black.)
Wretched Banquet: This probably won't be able to hit the things you really want it to. I would consider a removal spell that has a broader usage, like Doom Blade or Ultimate Price for this purpose. Orzhov Charm is another potential replacement - if you're really looking to remove small things then the life loss won't be a huge downside, and it can do other things too.
Rise from the Grave - Not bad, but Unburial Rites is a whole lot better in this deck. Another possible option given your Angel focus is Defy Death. It could be worth going to two copies here, depending on the rest of the deck.
Grim Discovery: Okay, but most of the time you won't have both (unless you've cracked a panorama or had a land destroyed) and straight reanimation does it better.
Befoul - How often do you run into problematic lands in your playgroup? If the answer is often, you might consider answers in your own land base instead of this - Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter give you outs to opponents' utility lands without having to dedicate a card to them. As creature removal, a lot of other cards are cheaper.
Merciless Eviction - Versatile mass removal is always a good thing to have in a controlling deck. Just be careful about using the enchantment mode with all the Pacifism effects you're running. Another potentially useful sweeper on a budget is Phyrexian Rebirth since you can end up with a big dude as the only creature.
Planeswalkers:
Gideon Jura: Good card. Not much to say about this one. Keep it. Potentially devastating if you've got several Nighthawks up to block. -

I too would love a winter planes that is a blend of the Temur shaman style and Ice Age fantasy brutalism, mixed with a bit more Conan. It doesn't have to be Norse. We know that Norse has already inspired so many fantasy tropes, why can't we just embrace the fantasy heritage of these aesthetics?

Yup, Glint Hawk, War Falcon, Loyal Pegasus, Oona's Gatewarden, Spindrift Drake, and Uktabi Drake are all 2/1s but have drawbacks. There are some 0/2 flyers for 1cmc, but it looks like Rustwing Falcon is the first 1cmc creature with flying and distributed p/t of 3, with no drawbacks!
