OMG that guy's posts arguing about satyr being bad were so bad that it woke me from my slumber, so guys I'm back in the business after taking a break(for who has never seem me here i used to post here in he beginning of the RTR meta).
So I won the gameday in my LGS(could say I crushed it) with this list
I decided to use firedrinker instead of BTE(it's a good card but i don't rly like it because it promotes inconsistency) to give more consistency, less board commitment and because i think BTE doesn't have much to chain with in this deck. The sideboard is a bit messed up because I didn't have much time and just got what I had at the moment. But I'm decided about tuning this deck to become a real deal.
So back to the gameday it was a 4 round swiss tournament with a top 4 cut
1 Round
BW control
2-0
both games were rly easy by the time he got a DD he was alredy too behind and even a merchant after it wouldn't get him in a better position
2 Round
UR rogue deck
2-0
just a really bad deck, don't know how this guy won the first round
3 Round
BG midrange
2-0
game 1 after he stalled the board i could finish him with mogis
game 2 I used act of treason on his ramped deadbridge goliath and got him pretty low, proceeded to finish him on the next turn.
4 Round
UWR control
2-0
game 1 he kept a quite slow hand and some early pressure with a phoenix and burn finished him
game 2 he drops a Yoked Ox turn 1, I star with a satyr and on turn 2 proceeded to attack and burn the OX, turn 3 I used Peak eruption on his steam vents and he drops another tapped steam vents on his 4 turn but then stumbles on land, and by the time he got his next land was already too late
Semifinal
UG monstrosity(same think as the GR one but this version uses Prophet of Kruphix and couple more U stuff)
2-0
game 1 I shocked his dorks and my satyr could hit through Sylvan Caryatid by the time he got an arbor colossus on the board i had a firefist with battalion.
game 2 he ramps into an early polukranos and stalls the board, i get a reckoner that's able to get through and when blocked i used firststrike+shock to kill his polukranos, he get's quite a board but I shock his Voyaging Satyr before he get's out of control, he's able to cast a Nylea's Disciple for 7 life but that's not enough to prevent my Mogis from finishing him
Final
UWR(same guy from 4th round)
game 1
I mull to 6 and get a land with 2 cackler+magma jet+3lands I keep. he proceeded to d-sphere my cacklers(should have magma jeted to save the other one) i get a phoenix and a reckoner on the board he wipes it, i bring phoenix back with magma jet, put 2 lands on bottom get a phoenix, he d-spheres it, we get in top deck mode i draw 5 lands in a row, he gets a jace and an elspeth.
game 2
i can get him to 6 before he stalls with an elspeth, i have 3 in play and a mogis in hand, i get some board which makes drawing my 4th land letal, i skullcrack his elspeth to prevent it from ulting and draw a 4th land and cast mogis, he has no counter.
game 3
i get a quite slow hand and flood a little bit but a reckoner and a mogis after him forces him to helix my reckoner, he wipes my board, I cast phoenix than can slowly take his life, he d-spheres it after a couple turns, i cast another one hit and put him and 9, he casts a jace and +1 him, i hit him puting him on 8, i have magma jet, lightning strike and skull crack in hand, he -2 his jace and get's a d-sphere for my phoenix, he casts it, I magma jet on EOT he's at 6, cast a reckoner on my turn and leave open mana for skull crack, he -2 the jace again get a charm and plays a tapped land, i cast an ash zealot pre-combat he disperses it, i hit with the reckoner he charms it, he's tapped i finish with skullcrack.
I'm thinking about building a slight with black splash for discard, removal, possibly exava and underworld cerberus(this guy seems to have a lot of hidden potential)
BTW do we still have the old FoS forum or everyone is using the DTR?
I used to play pauper with mono G but the format with storm and infect was quite depressing, but now after the ban I'm coming back and decided to build a UR post deck, I want to get prepared vs the top decks and start playing DEs again. My nickname on MTGO is GunnarPB, I'm also brazilian btw.
I am not sure if this belongs to clan dedicated to Red, but yesterday I've had long, long, long and interesting discussion about UWx Control decks. If someone doesn't know - I was UW Control player for quite long time. That's my first season playing something else than Ux-based deck.
Basically I was disgusted with Bant Control and their philosophy of building deck. And mostly important - by Sphinx's Revelation. I told my friend that it's a crap rare. Now, let me explain.
Bant Control is one of the most greedy and stupid decks in history of MTG - the only more greedy and badly put up deck I know was "Solar Fail" when Innistrad came out.
Back in the days, we were playing Control decks. We were humble yet dominant in our actions due to many ways of achieving Card Advantage over our opponents. We were playing counterspells to make a huge swing between card quality - we were exchanging versatile card which could stop many threat for things they needed in actual game.
Current "Control" has no idea what it's supposed to do.
My theory is that Thragtusk is such a powerfull card that they think they can do anything and play any card due to Thragtusk dragging them over games. With the biggest example of Sphinx's Revelation.
During my days we were laughing at 0.3$ Blue Sun's Zenith as relatively bad card. That was Timmy kind of card, just like SR.
People can't see when playing SR looses them games, they just remember when it wins due to being at T30 and playing it for X=10. Wow, dad's so proud of you that Thragtusk lets you play till this moment.
My argument was: "Look, if there'd be a card that costs 10 mana and is 20/20 - would that be good?". My friend (Bant player) responded with "nope". "So, is Sphinx's Revelation is good?" "Yes, it creates CA."
No it doesn't. Because every turn you have it in your hand and you are not capable of casting it for X>3, you are literally loosing a card.
And these people are playing 4 of them in their Bant "Control" - thinking that putting 2 counterspells and wrath effects makes them control things.
I'll show two decklists here. It's all about personal bragging, right? That's my old UW Venser Control from Zen-SoM. It wasn't the most dominant deck ever, but I've managed to get into Top100 in Poland thanks to it's performance. It did it's job everytime I went for FNM. Never had less than 3-2, mostly had 4-1.
Yes, I was able to play 5-6CMC spells with 24 lands thanks to amount of filter/draw this deck had (Preordain, WoO, SGO, Jace Beleren). Yes, I've had strong enough synergy to beat UB Controls playing JtMS thanks to Jace Beleren/Sun Titan. Yes, I was doing fine against Caw-Blade. The biggest problem here was combo matchup due to me being tap-out and not having access to good instant-speed removal which would stop combo on it's tracks. I had to sell this deck due to cash issues, and well, I still miss it.
Small info: this decklist was one of the most dominant ones on Modo during last months of Zen-SoM standard.
And now I'm here to show second, interesting decklist. That's something I'd consider a new face of Control in Gatecrash. Solar Flair. People who were playing "Solar Fail" in SoM-Innistrad, please, leave. This deck is still a nightmare for me. Snapcaster Mages in deck with 8-10 Instant/Sorceries. Just... just go away.
It's obviously still in progress - but at the moment, it's pretty strong. Beats Boros aggro in 70% of matches. It's vulnerable to GY-hate but it doesn't LOOSE to GY-hate due to being capable of controlling the field or ramping with Keyrunes into it's biggest drops.
If you are running your GTC gauntlet - try this one. It's very, very strong decklist.
sounds like a good deck, my brother is actually thinking of playing BW but he's thinking in playing Dega(BWR), i think it will be a strong deck. I'm not sure about deathpact angel, because he just gets rapped to exile clauses(no cleric trigger) and also i wouldn't run duress in the MD.
i wanna get a set of rootbound crag before they get more expensive but i can't find on good price on them dam it, need to find someone at my LGS to trade with.
I keep it. With 23 lands left in the deck, I stand a 23/53 chance of drawing a 2nd land (43.4%). Even If I don't hit my land drops, I have plays on turns 2, 3 and 4.
I have a mana sink and aggressive creatures who demand answers. Even if Falkenrath Aristocrat comes late, the little guys should have softened up my opponent by then.
Keep or draw? If you keep, do you play noble or cackler first?
mull, 1 land on the play doesn't give you many chances to draw extra lands, and you wanna curve in to 4 lands with a midrange build not get stuck at 2 lands. If you get stuck on lands which is probable, your drops can get outclassed by bigger drops and you hit a stall which you can't go over the top cuz you got no lands.. I only play 1 land hands if i have multiple one-drops on the draw and sometimes i regret that but usually I'm forced to do that cuz i already mulled to 6 or less and mulligan and again is not really an option.
after the charm spoiler i'm back on the boros train(for now at least).
Btw thalia and ash zealot look sweet together, gonna name my deck thalia and her friends
I'm really waiting to see if boros get something good but i'm quite disappointed with it for now, but gruul seems really good, probably gonna play RG after gatecrash if boros don't get anything good.
Few things I wanna comment on here: If you show your opponent Pyreheart Wolf or Hound of Griselbrand in game 1, Bant Control players will leave Detention Sphere in. ESPECIALLY if you show them Hound.
GW aggro decks always run Smiter, either main or sideboard. Count on it. You'll lose a lot less if you count on a Turn 2 smiter, cause I guarantee it will happen in approximately 100% of your GW matchups.
I know that but i have already seem some GW who don't pack smither(don't know why but it may happen), but i usually count that they have smither and proceed siding mizzium mortars, just wanted to explain that mortars on the play are an answer to smither and if they don't have it you won't need it, but they usually have.
GW aggro is the most popular deck in my LGS and i got an outstanding WR vs it, mostly because they are not very good players except for my brother but we usually just concede to whoever has more chances of winning or ID.
I think how exactly you are siding depends on your list and how your are gunning yourself for the meta, in my meta there are not many different decks so I don't pack SB for every deck but if I need to this is kinda how i would be siding.
UWr Flash - There's not much you can side vs them, Thunderbolt is one of the few cards you can use vs them, try to sideout your bad cards vs them like pillar of flame and stonewright(not that bad but if you have something better to replace for him on Sb go for it)
Naya Midrange - You always want to take out your pillar of flame vs them and bring in something more useful like Traitorous Blood and maybe a few Thunderbolts, you can race them on the play so there's no need to "go big", on the draw you can "go big" an bring extra lands with hound of griselbrand and maybe Mizzium Mortars if you plan to overload it.
Jund Midrange - samething as naya except you don't need Thunderbolts, race them on the play and bring the resilient dudes on the draw.
Bant Control - Pillar goes out, thunderbolt and traitorous blood goes in, you can bring the hounds on the draw if you want because only d-sphere removes him effectively and they may cut it on game 2 for a faster response.
BR Zombie Aggro - Bring all your pillars if they are not all in the MD and maybe a few Flames of the firebrand, on the draw you can go big and play more control, with Hound of griselbrand, Mizzium mortars and flames of the firebrand and you probably want to cut cackler and chainwalker as they don't block.
GW Aggro - depends if they are humans or more midrange, i like to use flames of the firebrand vs the humans variant but i don't like it vs the midrange one. Stromkirk Noble is good vs the humans variant but bad vs midrange. If they don't have smither you can play without mizzium mortars. I like to play more aggro on the play and more control on the draw bringing Hound of Griselbrand, Mizzium mortars and Flames of the Firebrand and bringing out my Non-blocking drops. I think Traitorous blood is quite good if you are trying to race them.
Junk Reanimator - bring out the Pillars bring in flames of the firebrand for lingering souls and thundebolt for resto angel, here you have no choice you have to race them it's just a matter of time until they get an angel of serenity or griselbrand or just keep bringing the thragtusks back. Avoid using burn to kill the thragtusks except if they are flicking it with resto angel, proceed with caution when trading with a thragtusk because they will will get a token and they may have an unburial rites to bring it back, many times the deck get "locked" because they have rites in the hand or grave but got no targets to reanimate.
When I build my decks I build it to synergy with the SB so the amount of cards that comes in and out match perfectly(or almost that) for each match.
Never get out of home without 4 of him in my SB so when I'm siding i just yell RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!! But yeah they are really amazing vs other aggro decks(specially on the draw when you side them in with more removal as Zem said) and control, midrange decks that don't pack pillar of flame.
you know, you prevented your GF from burning the house you are like a hero sir, so maybe the least she can do to to fix this is making sure you don't have to use your hand, try to view the good side of the story.
i think i might test the goodstuff list it's kinda getting boring to win using my slight build, it's like bringing a shotgun to a sword fight, it's fun in the beginning but people just lose the hope they can win after they realize they can't maybe changing the deck a little bit gives them some false hopes MUHUAHAHUAH and I'm not really liking the brimstone volleys in the MD and many times I'm siding midrange for game 2 so why not give it shot.
Some minor input on Gideon:
- he fits into PW-deck curve really well. 5CMC walkers are too slow ATM.
- he's actually not that amazing against aggro while matchup goes badly. you see Red with 4 creatures on the field. you got Verdict and Gideon in the hand. Are you really gonna play Giddy to have lots of counters on him so you happily accept fact that you are dying after letting your opponent untap? Nah. He's much less defensive than before - his purpose is to go offense. He's no bodyguard anymore. He's *just* a beatstick which avoids sweepers, removal and can get pretty big. But he's good at doin' it - so as long as you don't overvalue him, you should be fine with him.
- he fits both aggro and control. Aggro wants to diversify it's threats so they don't overextend into sweeper. Control wants huge, hard to deal with beatstick.
From what I've seen during this standard, aggro decks are never two-coloured. They just splash, right? I mean, we do Dos Rakis by throwing in all possible RB duals and Mountains. They do the same with Zombies, but are using Swamps. Is there a possibility of creating two-coloured deck or is it just not consistent enough?
Make no mistake, that Gideon is really only going to be playable in PW control. He's actually not too great UNLESS you plan on playing boardwipes and support PWS who blunt the power of creature aggro (like the wondertwins Jace and Tamiyo do so well).
But yeah, boros is looking pretty weak. Here's to hoping the charm comes through!
I don't really think the new gideon interacts well in a PW control deck, he's just a bad version of the old gideon for this kind of decks, also i don't think he interacts well with board wipes, you wanna use a board wipe for 4 manas and not Gideon and if they have no creatures he's not getting many counters(and that's what he does a beatstick that get counters). He only seems to be superior to the old gideon to break a board stall.
So I won the gameday in my LGS(could say I crushed it) with this list
22 Mountain
4 FIREDRINKER SATYR
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Firefist Striker
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Fanatic of Mogis
4 Lightning Strike
2 Magma Jet
3 Mizzium Mortars
4 Blistercoil Weird
2 Peak Eruption
2 Skullcrack
2 Act of Treason
I decided to use firedrinker instead of BTE(it's a good card but i don't rly like it because it promotes inconsistency) to give more consistency, less board commitment and because i think BTE doesn't have much to chain with in this deck.
