Name is atrocious enough for me to think it is fake.

  • posted a message on Event Deck vs Fat Pack?
You could make a deck out of the fat pack cards, but it will likely not be as synergistic as the event deck. If you really need a deck to play, the event deck is a better option.

However, if you just want some cool nee cards, the fat pack is the way to go. Full art lands are beautiful and the storage and deck boxes are nice additions. If you already have a deck and just want to upgrade it or try a few new cards, the fat pack is better.

Also, consider the Clash Pack too, if you haven't already. It has two playable decks (not completely standard legal, mind you, but containing many good standard legal cards).

  • posted a message on Why don't players play their lands?
Many Legacy decks can work fine with only a few lands on the battlefield, so the illusion of useful cards in hand is probably more useful than an unnecessary extra mana. Mind games can be quite useful in a power-packed format like Legacy. Plus, land destruction, usually in the form of Wasteland, has a large presence, so holding back some lands isn't a bad idea if they are important to a dexk's strategy.

Draconic Roar is pretty nice, but the Boltwing performed too well at the prerelease for me to pass up. It gets out of hand with even a single dasher and it gets insane with more.

What is the format you are the most interested/play the most in?

I mainly play casual EDH, Modern, or Legacy with my friends and I try to go to the prerelease for each set (only missed one since rejoining the game back in Lorwyn!). On the rare Friday Night Magic I am able to attend, I usually draft, though sometimes I throw together some silly Standard deck for fun. Go Morph.dec!

What is the primary way in which you get cards (buy singles, draft, etc.)?

I usually buy a box and a fat pack from each set as well as attending the prerelease events and occasional drafts. Beyond that, I just buy singles if I happen to need a certain card.

What is your favorite color(s) of magic?

Black. Always has been, probably always will be. I enjoy blue as well, but something about black's careful resource balancing act really draws me in. Mono-B Pox is probably my favorite deck ever.

After seeing the full spoiler, what are your opinions on the set:

    Powerwise/Mechanically:
There are many interesting build-around cards that could spawn new deck types and there are some fun toys for most existing decks. There is a ton of solid removal and enough pseudo-bombs to keep limited interesting. I was very surprised by how weak the dragons of the set turned out... I expected some pushed dragons, but there aren't any. Some are useful, some are interesting, but none of them blew me away. I feel like Wizards missed an opportunity here, especially considering Stormbreath Dragon and Thundermaw Hellkite were some examples of very recent, balanced dragons. The Warrior tribe, however, has all the tools to be a competitive tribal deck. The set is chock full of awesome Warriors and I wouldn't be surprised if they became a Standard deck soon. I think Dash has a lot of potential. It is a narrow mechanic, but I think it can be deceptively powerful in the right environment.

There are some mechanical weaknesses to the set though. Megamorph seems like a "we ran out of time" mechanic. I have always loved the Morph mechanic and I would have much rather it simply returned. The Megamorph costs, ignoring the rare cycle of awesome creatures, are prohibitively high and Wizards was too careful with them. There was some sweet potential for a Morph variant, but Megamorph, outside of a few cards, is very underwhelming. The same for Rebound- it has a lot of devastating potential and Wizards erred on the side of caution perhaps too much. The Exploit mechanic seems like it could be interesting, but there wasn't a whole lot of depth to it in DTK. Maybe someday?

    Creatively:
I think Wizards shot themselves in the foot by trying to cram too much into the set. Too many mechanics, too many cycles-for-the-sake-of-cycles, and the whole "stuff it full of dragons!" mentality severely limited the set's creativity. I like a lot of the cards, but I was also left desiring more! The Megamorph Dragon cycle is a perfect example of wasted space. They may win a few games, but it is hard for me to look at them and think "Oh neat, a dragon." As I said earlier, there are many interesting and creative cards in the set, but it is hard to concentrate on them when the marquee tribe got shafted so hard.

Nicol Bolas would nicely balance out the abundance of WG. Although he played a minor role in the current block story, he must have some bigger scheme involving the Eldrazi and he would probably be interested in the large gathering of heroes. Perhaps he shall finally spring his trap?

Loving the new mechanics! I really enjoyed Morph back in my kitchen table days, so it is nice to see its role expanding with the Manifest mechanic. I am curious about what happens if you would manifest a dual-face card. If I recall correctly, the rules state they cannot be placed face-down, so if I was supposed to manifest a Huntsmaster of the Fells, does it just do nothing instead?

  • posted a message on How many fully completed Legacy decks do you have?
    Only two so far:

    Monoblack Pox
    White Stax

Both of those were constructed a few years ago when i was still in college. I have most of the fetches and playsets of many staples, but due to a lack of time and people to play with, I haven't really tried to put together any additional decks since graduating. Hopefully I can find a few more players in my area- then I can justify building the Stoneblade deck i always sort of wanted!

  • posted a message on Land in front vs land in back?
I have always played with lands in the back, mostly because I started card games with Yu-Gi-Oh in my teens and got used to creatures up front. In the hundreds of tournaments I have been in, I have only seen a handful of people lead with lands in front.

Unfortunately, one of them was a friend of mine who tried to throw off new players at FNM. He would only lead with lands if he either didn't recognize the opponent (the show was in a college town, so we had a pretty constant influx of new blood joining their friends for a first time FNM) and he would try to throw them off. The TO and I finally convinced him to stop once we realized what he was doing, but it does go to show that while there are some people who do it out of habit, there are also some people who try to use it in a predatory manner.

Obviously it is blue because it is best friends with Deadeye Navigator. But seriously, it is a nice Ferocious enabler and two bodies is almost always better than one.

I, for one, am surprised (and relieved) this wasn't bumped up to a rare. Not because it SHOULD be, but because so many other less spectacular cards have been for apparently no reason beyond limited And this dude is pretty solid there.

That first mode will ruin a lot of days with Fetches back in the mix. I was hoping for some sort of Lightning Helix on this charm, but I am perfectly content with this card. Seems like a very powerful and worthy addition to our charm line-up.

I was excited when I saw "instant" and then sad when I saw "nonland." Is a Vindicate reprint really too much to ask for? The Exile part is nice, but I wish it could kill lands.

Me too. Now I can live a normal life again.....I feel like Tom Cruise at the end of the Last Samurai or the Hobbits that got left behind after the LotR trilogy was over. Where do I go from here....

I know how you feel. I have had an adrenaline rush every time my phone has buzzed for the last week thanks to my overly sensitive page watcher. All future texts will be met with so much less enthusiasm. And now my commute home will be far less suspenseful now that I don't have to be afraid of them going live during rush hour.

I was in my monthly 1-on-1 with my boss when my phone started going nuts with the sudden stocking of everything else. So I asked her to excuse me for a second to buy them. Her husband plays Magic with his friends sometimes (which I didn't know), so she made an account while it was still "coming soon" and was able to buy one for him as a surprise. My heart was pounding and I accidentally selected the most expensive shipping, but whatever. I can't wait to sleeve these babies!

If they direct all the damage to the bear, then yeah, it would fizzle. But if they assign 1 damage to the bear and 1 damage to you or another creature that doesn't self-sacrifice, then the effect would still resolve for that 1 damage and then they would get to draw a card. With cards with multiple targets, they only fizzle if ALL the targets are illegal.
