There is no power creep.
It's simply that the definition of "what's powerful" is changing. Big creatures aren't powerful any more; creatures have to do things to be good.
To me, that is a negligible factor. I care more about total mana cost than about color weight when considering cards. In my opinion, render silent is definitely worth the stricter mana cost over cancel, considering its very powerful additional effect. Also, in my mind, a stricter mana cost that has the same converted mana cost (WUU compared to 1UU) may be worthy of consideration to certain players, but it is not nearly as drastic a difference as having a different mana cost altogether, such as how cancel has a higher converted mana cost than either mana leak or the original counterspell.
Yes, but it certainly doesn't have the "same mana cost".
WotC has decided that 3 mana should be the default casting cost for unconditional counterspells, so this card is perfectly acceptable, to me. Plus, render silent has a lower mana cost than do fall of the gavel, last word, essence backlash, and Offering to Asha, so it definitely is superior to those cards, in my mind.
Um, just because WotC has decided 3 CMC is the default cost for a hard counter, doesn't mean it's playable. Mana Leak, Remand, Cryptic Command, Spell Pierce and Spell Snare are so many leagues ahead of this card it's not even funny. In Modern this card could see play, but if it does it'll be a metagame decision.
It has the same mana cost as cancel, but is completely superior to it,
No it doesn't. It costs another coloured mana, which is pretty relevant.
I still believe that this card is very powerful, as it is a counterspell with a silence effect added to it; what is there to not like about that?
The fact that it costs 3 mana? In Standard, it might be good once Dissipate rotates out, but it's probably not good enough for Modern or Legacy. It might be OK as a one-of in some Gifts lists, but that's about all (probably).
The second ability would have to have the full name on it. Definitely fake.
NO. The first ability uses the full name, so the card can use a shortened form for the other text. In the case of Borborygmos Enraged, it's not the usual form with a comma, so it doesn't get a shortening.
The original Maro's had P/T affected by lands. They made a cycle in Saviors (A hand size matters block), that were affected by hand size- Basically making them another type of Maro.
That's the entire point. The Phyrexian mana symbol means you can pay it with 1W or with 1 and 2 life. You don't have to play white to play Apostle's Blessing, and in fact I've never seen an Infect deck play white.
It's simply that the definition of "what's powerful" is changing. Big creatures aren't powerful any more; creatures have to do things to be good.
Edit: Though on closer inspection, it won't let me view promos in other languages, so I'm not so sure now.
