I really hope that there is a massive reprint of fetches. I cant even afford marsh flats and no one wants to trade here, everyone is hoarding the fetches to see how long the bubble lasts. It makes it really hard to play a decent deck. I have resigned myself to the fact that I never can get goys(at least I have scavenging ooze), but the fact that a decent mana base, not counting the rest of the deck, costs in the range of 500$ seems absurd.
@Tadiou, is there a reason you have Body and Mind over Fire and Ice? Just a meta call? I've tested both, and gotten better results out of FaI over BaM. I totally agree with WaP main though.
There is a store here right by campus, fantastic location, horrible management. Like, the dude does 10$ dollar drafts, but doesnt sort the lands out of his bulk. He also refuses to take any sort of loss on singles, so he has like 20 scavenging oozes in his binder at 15$ each. He also knows nothing about magic, dude tried to sell a "foil" mana crypt(fake).
One of the biggest reasons that I am playing modern rather than legacy is the price issue. There is a thriving community of legacy players here, so I thought, lets ask them what can be built for 300-400$. According to them, my choices boiled down to a few options, one dimensional decks, or ones that roll over and die post sideboard (burn, dredge, affinity). Most of them suggested that I spend my money on staples, rather than having a deck. I could probably port my modern deck (hatebears) to legacy, but the first step is getting wastelands, krakases and ports, thats kind of a big investment right there. I 100% agree that legacy is the most interesting, and well balanced format, but its out of my price range, and will be for several years
For me, the largest barrier is the cost, and the fact that cards tend to spike in price whenever they have any sort of showing in any tourney. For example, look at horizon canopy. A second problem is that for trading, a lot of modern staples have far more stability than standard cards, so as a result, you either need to offer overvalue, or just buy the cards.
I'm playing a budget version of hatebears, with more quasli pridemages in the place of voice, the only reason I can play canopies is because I was lucky to get them at 10$. At 30$? I would in all probability just play more plains and forests.
This looks a lot like my deck, with a few differences. I think that for adding reckoner and thundermaw, you could cut a Temple Garden for a blood crypt, and a stomping grounds for a sacred foundry?, as you need less green, and more red. I prefer running pinpoint removal over bonfire in the main, largely because of reckoner. Have you considered running Vault of the Archangel?
The most fun for me was my werewolves. Nowhere near viable, but it did win me one FNM, where no one else drew removal. It's great to have a board full of weak humans, and then moonmist them all into 5/5, who swing for 8 or nine
