In terms of cost, Magic is already extremely accessible. In fact, it is free to play in several ways.
1) Magic Duels allows players to build their own decks, play against live players or AI, and amass a collection of digital cards. Completely free.
2) Magic Online allows players to play free games with pre-constructed demo decks.
3) Wizards of the Coast occasionally gives out free physical 30 card decks for retailers to distribute.
So whether you want to play the digital version or the physical version, you have completely free options.
Now, I can already hear people saying, "But those aren't REAL Magic! They're just limited options!"
Well, ALL games of Magic are limited in some way. Standard and Modern exclude many sets. Legacy, Vintage, Commander, and Pauper have banned lists. And it goes without saying that Draft and Sealed are... well... Limited.
In addition to the free options, there are many, many cheap options, such as Duel Decks, Intro packs, and Deck Builders Toolkits. All of these can be purchased for about $20 or less and can be considered nearly self-contained games, although you might have to purchase two Intro decks.
The point is that in general, Magic is EXTREMELY accessible and affordable. WotC is doing a FANTASTIC job of providing easy access for the masses. The OP completely overlooks this point.
Instead, the OP focuses on the cost of competitive constructed formats. While these formats are indeed a major part of Magic for many players, they are not the WHOLE of Magic. Also, competitive Magic is subject to somewhat different restrictions than casual Magic, just like a game of competitive college football is subject to different restrictions than a game of backyard touch football. These restrictions include differences in rules, required equipment, and costs.
The nature of almost any hobby is to get more expensive the deeper you get into it. The more you want out of it, the more you have to put into it, usually with regards to both time and money. Magic is definitely no different. If one wants to move from casual to competitive, it will require a higher investment in better equipment. In sports, you would be buying better padding, helmets, shoes, etc. In Magic's case, cards are the equipment. If you can't afford or simply don't want to spend money on that better equipment, then don't buy it. Enjoy the options you do have. Magic's really fun in many forms, including the cheap and free versions.
Focus on what you do have, instead of what you don't.

My sealed pool generator is up for Battle for Zendikar. All of the cards are added including BFZ expedition cards. Right now the expedition lands have a 1/200 chance per pack. If anyone has a more accurate odds please let me know.
As always, I am open to suggestions for improvements. Also, if you notice any problems please let me know!

DJ_TinyTim posted a message on Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Lands'Twas the year before Vegas, and all through the deckbox not a permanent was tapping, not even a Mox. The mana was curved in the decklist with care, in the hopes that Nicol Bolas would soon be there.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
The tokens were sleeved all snug in their beds, while visions of opponent mulligans danced in their heads. And my Modern decks all aligned on the shelves, as I had decided to go ahead and play Elves.
When on MythicSpolier there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to my browser, I wish I had cash, for the new card from Fate might be cast with flash.
The glow of the monitor, slightly covered in lint, gave my pale face a washed out, no-sun-for-weeks tint, and then what I saw, and I swear I'm not braggin', was a colorless Planeswalker, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon.
With a high casting cost, so I can't play it quick, I still knew that this card was definitely the *****. Ramp it with Nykthos, or Coursers for days, the Planeswalkers cower under Ugin's fell gaze: "Now Venser! Now Elspeth! Now, Ajani and Karn! On, Lilliana! On, Jace! On, Tezzeret and Sorin! To the top of the deck! To a Demonic Tutor's call! Now activate! Activate! Ultimate all!"
And then, with a die roll, I smoothed out my mat and started to proxy, 'cause I had to master that. As I copy and pasted, printed and cut, I couldn't wait to beat some scrub's butt.
Protect him with Negates or creatures that fly, I just don't want Ugin to be cast and then die. His +2 is awesome, it's a Bolt for free, but his ult is the place that we all want to be.
His artwork is *****in', plus he's card number one, and Levi could freak, 'cause the Phyrexian's might be undone. I want him in foil, a playset would be neat. Fate having cards to play with him would make this complete. Now we all have to wait, but that's just fine - the meta will shift as we travel through time.
A few more weeks until we all draft from Fate, and then it's on to the Dragons...dear God, I can't wait! -

Mox Ryan posted a message on Thinking in a VacuumThey're trying to say that most cards aren't good in a vacuum. A foil Voice of Resurgence, for example, is not very good in a vacuum due to the damage the internal mechanisms can exert on the card. However, a double sleeved NON-foil VOR can surely withstand much more wear and tear in the same environment/inside of vacuum conditions. Other instances of the phrase include the fact that Jace himself, in the current metagame, is "good with vacuums" in that he is a "committed and loving housewife" and an all around "fair and decent woman".Posted in: Magic General - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
