i have been playing the deck with NO for a couple of weeks and i actually really like it.i think my meta is a little less competitive than yours so i dont feel the mana loss ass bad. what do you think of the new green eldrazi spoiled? dies it have a place in here?
Hello everyone. On Friday I purchased the Meren Pre-con in hopes of merging it with my mono black deck. After playing a few games on launch night with it I wasn't really feeling Meren anymore and then I found this list which is exactly what I was trying to do with the deck. I have most of the monoblack good stuff and already own a sotf and other green cards from a previous mono green deck but the one thing I do not have is a solid mana base. I literally am using the lands that came with the precon plus cabal and urborg. Another thing is that my playgroup doesnt allow partial mulligan. So i am going to add 5 lands to put the count at 36.
My question is what 5 cards are most cuttable in place of lands. Hermit Druid is one alredy so I guess I need 4 more cuts. One that really stands out to me as an easy cut is scroll rack. Any other suggestions? Thanks to anyone who answers.
Yes, been playing the last couple of days with it and trying to adjust in this new meta. In school there were maybe one or two people who had blue in their deck now literally everyone where I am playing now has blue as the backbone of their deck. What do you guys think about Red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast. what about Banefire and the other one whos name slips my mind right now. The one where you can kick it to give it split second. Other than the mass amount of blue the deck runs awesome. I can totally tell the difference now that I have a Crucible and real fetches.
Made a huge update to this deck. Unloaded my trade binder and got a bunch of goodies for Jaya. I Just moved back home and the meta is very blue here. Anyone have any any suggestions to help me out? Also any other critique is welcome.
@druemill:
The meta calls all sound pretty good. I feel you on the poor college student thing. I graduated a couple years ago and am planning on going back, so that's a familiar place to be. I just wanted to throw out the money card that's done the most for my deck, in case you could slot it in there somehow.
Glad you're liking the deck! Don't be a stranger.
Yes, thank you. Crucible is the first card I am getting.
@druemill, if you're still around: I like a lot of your choices. The ones that I'm curious about are mostly in your manabase, but there are a couple others.
- I'd like to hear how the cycling lands (Forgotten Cave and Smoldering Crater) have been treating you. I've always skipped them because they don't give me any bonus with most of the mana doublers and Jaya already gives you something to do with excess mana.
- I'm also wondering a little about Shivan Gorge, because it's a very small ping in this format. I know there have been other people having success with it, but I'm always after more opinions.
- Have Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse been pulling their weight? I run fetches, but I'd probably skip them if they came in tapped. Have the upsides been worth the tempo loss?
- How much trouble do you have activating Spinerock Knoll? There are a limited number of ways to do 7 here. Do you find yourself relying on opponents at all?
- Has the upkeep restriction on Shard Phoenix hurt at all? That's always what keeps it out of my list, despite the fairly high power of the card in this deck.
For suggestions, I'd grab Crucible of Worlds if you can scrounge one up. I know it's an expensive option, but if you happen to have one sitting around, can proxy it, borrow one from a friend, it shows up in modern masters this summer, etc, jump on that. It's a wonderful way to fuel Jaya, hit land drops, reuse sac/cycling lands, and is an all around powerful card. I'd also consider Skarrgan Firebird (which is something of a pet card for me). Not only does it give you a nice discard option, it offers something that this deck sorely needs sometimes: a reliable win con that won't blow up in your face. Six power flyers shouldn't be scoffed at, even in a 40 life multiplayer format. You might also consider Strip Mine, or one of the many similar cards. Having ways to attack the manabase when your opponents drop lands like Gaea's Cradle or Academy Ruins is a necessity, in my opinion. Beyond that, play around with it! That's always going to be the most effective way to edit your deck. I know mine has remarkably little overlap from where it started, and that's almost entirely from playing the deck to death.
Thank you for your response and looking at my list. I have been playing with the deck quite a bit since I posted that and actually have some experience with the deck now. A lot of the choices I have made are meta specific.
The cycling lands and me have a love hate relationship. Sometimes I wish they were Snow Mountains and sometimes they are exactly the card I want to draw. I am going to keep them in for a while longer to see how they fair out as the deck progresses. I don't want to take them out until there is a situation where the only thing that would've helped me is if they weren't the cycling lands.
I decided to play the Gorge because I saw it in this thread and saw it was a very cheap card from the arsenal and wanted to play it. Still testing it as I am most cards in this deck. Hasn't been a super all star but the situation has come up where I was keeping someones Luminarch Ascension in check and that is enough for me to keep it in for now.
Tucking is a thing in my meta and I need shuffle effects. Thats why I am playing Expanse and Wilds. I am a poor college student and I can't afford fetches so I am working with what I have.
Spinerock knoll is again another card that is for my meta. Most of the time I am sitting back and letting my opponents duke it out so I do get a few chances to activate it.
Actually since posting my list I found a Skaargan Firebird in my friends trade binder and I replaced the Shard Phoenix with it.
Crucible is the first card I am getting for this deck. But once again I am a poor college student so I have to wait till summer and I am start working again to get a little extra cash.
And yes I totally forgot about Strip Mine like effects. I only have one Mine in my other deck so I am going to put in a Ghost Quarter.
Once again thank you for input and suggestions. Glad to be part of the Jaya club now.
Hello everyone. Long time lurker of this thread, first time poster. First I want to say thank you to Weebo and everyone else that contributes to this thread, I have learned a lot from all the posts in here and they have really helped me a lot in creating this deck. That being said, I have been playing my extremely fast mono green deck for almost three years now. So i decided to make something the complete opposite. After reading this thread I thought Jaya would be the perfect choice.
I wanted to make a deck that used politics as a big part of its game. The general started out as Diaochan, Artful Beauty but I didn't like her ability at sorcery speed and not only to I like the fact that Jaya can be used at instant speed, I like that she can kill any blue permanent. Bye Bye Omniscience. So after reading this thread and compiling cards this is the deck I have come up with.
I have only had the deck made for around a week or two so there are a lot of kinks I still need to work out but thats why I am posting in here for criticism. Please feel free to question any of my card choices and suggest any you don't see in here. I feel it is still a bit clunky. From the games I have played with it, I feel like I have too much mana and not enough things to spend it on. Would love to hear what all the fellow Jaya players have to say about the brew I made. And would really appreciate some suggestions. Thanks to all that reply.
This. I love this card in my Multani deck. Can be used to give him +4+4 at instant speed and it nets me a card. And it keeps my opponents happy when I use it. Always happy to draw Miko.
