Win percentages and similar aggregates are useful as a starting point, definitely. They can be a bit misleading in terms of singular events.
For instance, despite preparing for a specific predicted meta, you might run into three burn decks in a row. I know that this phenomenon has happened often enough during my decades as a player that I take wider metagame stats with a huge pinch of salt and more of a proposal of initial viability than an ultimate suitability.
With that in mind, the often-cited mantra of getting good with a specific "decent" deck does hold some weight. If you're like me and flip-flop around between decks, you often chain a bunch of bad matchups together by switching, whereas it would have balanced out rather neatly good/bad if I'd stuck with only one deck.
We are also seeing certain decks, in the hands of experienced players who are having a good day, hitting the top tables repeatedly. Counters company is a deck still quietly managing to pull top 8 finishes, and other more niche decks like kci are making a name for themselves as well. If your experience in modern puts a deck about on par with either of those decks, then there's a strong chance you can leverage mastery of a deck to your advantage.
Yes, it's true that a deck needs to have the tools in the first place to give you a fair whack at a good finish. Once you've identified a decent enough deck however, the rest is up to you, and that includes just mercilessly grinding through those awkward periods where you don't manage to hit a strong finish for a while. It happens to everyone, even Finkel. Don't assume you're above just 'having a bad run' and get back to enjoying a couple of core decks and build up those reps.

Valanarch posted a message on WoTC Mothership Spoils (18/04) - FULL SET SPOILED!Posted in: The Rumor MillQuote from swords36Yea had a feeling my counting skills left something to be desired, but overall I'm kind of dissapointed. On one hand, I'm happy they made more 3 mana gods, but on the other hand, pharika is nearly unplayable along with sage, and the black mythic and the equipment. I would be a lot less angry about the weakness of the set if LSV had actually spoiled a good card, and not some mediocre mono-red sideboard *****.
I agree about LSV. -

Pouncing Kavu posted a message on [[M14]] DailyMTG Previews 7/8: Full SpoilerNothing amazing spoiled, but I was already pretty happy with the set. Nice to see some fun cards reprinted. Disappointed that Domestication is rare. Wizards really hates stealing auras at any lower rarity...Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Pfisiar posted a message on [[RTR]] Rakdos CharmPosted in: The Rumor MillQuote from Master MojaThat last ability seems very cool against token decks. I would think of this to be more more of sideboard card, since it has many sideboard card themes built into it; artifact destruction, token hate, and graveyard hate.
This thing hates a LOT of different kinds of decks. More so than the others, Rakdos charm is a toolbox. -

Matchups:
UW vs UW = Draw
UW vs UW = 2-0 Win
UW vs BG Midrange = 2-1 Win
UW vs Waste Not Brew = 2-1 Win
Overall Puzzle box was great, even on its own it digs towards the combo and allows for filtering. We also play a lot of instant speed maindeck so we can respond to the trigger. Being able to curve out Narset into puzzle box on an empty board can virtually win the game on the spot, its a really nice thing to have access to in UW. Sanitarium was amazing all night, highly recommend this with 4x Narset.

Consuming Fervor is actually insane. This card can't be cut and should be a 4 of.
Hazoret is obviously great, but I think it's better suited for the sideboard against control, the deck doesn't need him to end the game.
Fiery temper, while good, can create a lot of awkward hands. I've updated my list (see below) to experiment with it. Tomorrow FNM I'll give it a shot.
Soul-Scar Mage is good, I don't doubt it. It interacts nicely with Shock, Fervor and Rampage and I'm trying to figure out of it's just stricly better than Ahn-Crop Crasher (which has been stellar). The goal of my list was to punish an opponent ever tapping out against us, which is does extremely well thanks to Menace/ Cannot Block / Trample / Haste. Prowess as a mechanic is good, and the effect on Soul Scar mage is strong, but is it really strong enough in this archetype?
Bomat Courier can't say enough about how insane this card is. Sometimes, it does 1 damage. Other times, it can literally win you the game. It rewards us for dumping our hand as fast as possible.
4x Furyblade Vampire
3x Ahn-Crop Crasher
3x Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
4x Bomat Courier
4x Falkenrath Gorger
4x Flameblade Adept
4x Insolent Neonate
4x Village Messenger
4x Fiery Temper
4x Invigorated Rampage

Nephalia Acadamy does not affect either of those cards as they do not state discard but rather exile.

Preface: Mana base isn't tested and is more than likely incorrect, this is a placeholder. I'm also unsure about total land count, but I feel it's close, 23-24 lands is a possibility (currently 22).

4x Thunderbreak Regent
2x Goblin Dark-Dwellers
Instants / Sorcery
4x Exquisite Firecraft
4x Draconic Roar
3x Tormenting Voice
4x Fiery Temper
1x Alms of the Vein
4x Incendiary Flow
2x Kolaghan's command
4x Collective Brutality
4x Foreboding Ruins
4x Smoldering Marsh
1x Hanweir Battlements
1x Haven of the Spirit Dragon
1x Geier Reach Sanitarium
12x Mountain
1x Swamp
4x Self-inflicted Wound
2x Read the Bones
1x Goblin Dark-Dwellers
3x Duress
3x Rending Volley
2x Virulent Plague
Suggestions welcome, I'm constantly changing the list in the OP as I figure out numbers.

Some notes:
4x Vapor Snag is the nuts
13x Land 4x Land Grant felt good all night, still going to go up to 14x Land with 4 Land Grant.
I'm still up in the air on the 4x Memory Lapse slot vs Mana Leak
Is Snap needed in the mainboard on top of Vapor snag?
Anyone with changes to their lists I'd love to see some input, here's what I ran:
4x Delver of Secrets
4x Nimble Mongoose
4x Werebear
Spells
4x Land Grant
4x Brainstorm
4x Thoughtscour

Call the Bloodline : Perhaps a 1 of as an additional discard outlet in conjunction with... and hear me out..
Sanitarium Skeleton which is recurring discard that allows us to use Altar's Reap over Merciless Resolve.
Liliana, Heretical Healer could also be used with this setup if you choose to include Fleshbag Marauder as a synergy.
Perhaps this setup can be a different design of the MBC deck.
Also Infinite Obliteration should absolutely be in the board versus ramp IMO.
Edit:
I'll draft up my own list today and post here for discussion. I'm very much onboard (parden the pun) for the FUTF strategy as the main win condition however as that card seems nutty to me. Perhaps more hand disruption is needed in the maindeck like Duress, time will tell.
Edit2: It seems like your current sideboard is to weighted towards the aggro matchups. Granted sideboards are completely meta dependent so this won't count for much but week 1 I would make these changes:
- I would swap to 4 Duress and 2 Transgress the Mind.
- +3 Infinite Obilteration, -1 Dead weight, -1 Shamble Back, -1 Flaying Tendrils.
