So all of these are different kinds of games. Some competitive, some non-competitive. Some skill-based, some luck-based. Some with multiple players in a zero-sum, some with multiple players in group entertainment, some played with one player.
Could we get Dr Richard Garfield to post in this thread?
Cap itemized deductions at 28% of AGI, cap charitable deductions to $15,000; allow the 2001 and 2003 tax breaks to expire for the wealthiest 2% of Americans, allow the payroll tax cuts to expire so we're also sticking it to the working folk, grant citizenship to immigrants who are making money here so we can tax them like they're Americans, consolidate the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, cap the payouts of social security of wealthy retirees that can afford to pay their own retirement homes, raise the retirement age and hope more people die before collecting social security, put a national sales tax on all or some goods, make the hippies happy by legalizing and taxing marijuana, make the wedding industry happy by legalizing same-sex marriage, at least cut the growth of military spending while we're out of our two major occupations...
We can spend money in hoping to get returns on investment like investing in recycling so we can keep selling soda cans to the Chinese, we can start a federal charity to donate money to the federal government, we can cut the corporate tax rate to the middle of the pack to stay competitive with other countries. We can keep ramping up the harvest of coal and natural gas to become North American energy independent, we can write a law that says everyone has to buy health insurance and stop clogging up the emergency rooms.
If things get really bad we can just sell Montana to Canada : P
It's generally easy to cry for new taxes when the country is in debt. Hey look, we have trillion dollar deficits, maybe we shouldn't renew all those temporary tax breaks and try to go back to the tax rates that gave the US a surplus.
I fully expect to have higher taxes by the time this deal is over, and I'll consider it a modest way to help my country.
Also note the article is talking about churches bringing left over food that they cooked themselves and giving it to government run shelters. This a great sentiment, it really is, but the government has a right to be leary about pre-made food just handed to them.
It's like trick or treating for Halloween. Couldn't take apples because some people put razor blades in them. Not everyone is charitable with charity.
I just plain and simply do not agree with government telling people what they can and cannot eat, what they can and cannot donate, all of this sort of stuff is just rediculous. Its a slippery slope (on a general level, not just this one article) and one that makes me glad I dont live in New York. Heck, when even Obama makes a joke about the drink size restriction during his campaign, that should tell you something :p.
There were a lot of jokes at that charity benefit dinner in NY
You probably wouldn't like the gas rationing policy either.
Everyone should spend some time living in poverty for a while. You'd have a better appreciation for what it's like to live on <20K a year with a single mom and 2 kids. The lack of compassion in this thread is stomach.
The fact of the matter is, most of these people that are on assistance don't want to be on assistance. Was I happy about giving the lunch lady my card to punched for free lunch every day? No. Did my mom feel great when she used food stamps to pay for our food? She waited until the store was about to close to go shopping so people wouldn't see her doing it.
But you know what, you can't expect people have NOTHING even when working a 40+hours a week. I make more in two hours sitting at a desk than my mom made in 9+ hours working her fingers to the bone in a non-unionized factory, no health care, no vacation time, sexually harassing bosses and dangerous work conditions. Watching my mother literally sob because she just didn't know what else she could to better provide for us. We were part of the 47%. We were "takers". We were also givers of blood and sweat so some dude could buy another yacht for his third family.
And do you know how many times I have complained about the tens of thousands of dollars I pay in taxes every years as it relates to social welfare? Zero.
That's because I know most people are hard workers. Most people don't want to take a hand out and do as a last resort. I know that my tax dollars are putting food in the mouths of a family that is trying as hard as they can to get out of the hole. My life happened to turn out in a way that I'm able to do so, and I feel an obligation to help those that have less than I do.
The fact of the matter is the division of wealth in this country is multitudes greater than it should be. Highs are so high, and low is so low that the average cost of living is simply beyond what some people can afford. And so.... people like my family 20 years ago, with shame, accept a hand out. How ****ing horrible and lazy we were, right?
How is it that I'm a ****ing atheist and I have more compassion than the political party in the country that is supposed to REPRESENT JESUS ****ING CHRIST. You people make me sick.
Youll also most often notice that a LOT of the wealthy people, also donate a TON of their money to charity as well. They would rather use their money to put to the causes they believe in, rather than having the government put it wherever the government feels it should be used for. Thats another thing to consider. Also, there are a lot of republicans who dont have that religious affiliation as well, just saying.
In that world (that existed before any of them were alive) - we'd have a very bizarre landscape of charities - voluntary charities exclusively make some very strong and others very weak.
Also I presume in such a case you support getting rid of charitable deductions, right?
Since they're truly charitable and not doing it for a tax kickback.
I am actually. I believe that the entire tax code needs to be revamped, a lot of deductions need to be gotten rid of (not the standard deduction/individual exemptions obviously), including charitable donations, and then one can look at adjusting the tax rates to allow for increased revenue by the government, but also reduced rates for everyone. Whether such a thing will ever happen is another thing entirely though.
Even less tax rates for individuals is difficult to swing right now because we can't afford the tax breaks we've already extended.

I'm not terribly impressed by Charitable Remainder Unitrusts and donations to such charities as the Fraser Institute. When the US government spends it at least I know its going to help the US.
Dow Jones: 6547 did not occur until after Obama was President.
DJ was 8228on close on Jan 21, 2009.
Current DJ value: 12932.
This is not double.
On a postive note the market is up 50% under Obama. On a negative note, the market is quickly taking away gains made during the 1st administration.
If you'd like to give an accurate impact just look at what happened. The market was going down quickly from 2008 when it fully collapsed in 2009. It bounceded quickly from the panic/automatic sales triggers to settle at roughly 10800 a year after Obama took office. Given it had started so high 3 years before this is not considerde 'gain' but loss for investors and retirees.
The market peaked at 13279 during Obama. From crater to 6547 to peak is double: likely your point, but Retirement funds don't start putting money in at the crater. They put money in for decades.
At this point the market is heading down again. It is not yet collapsing, but may very well do so.
The market is going to keep selling up until a fiscal cliff deal or the Buffet tax is put in place. Prices will drop to bargain bin prices. Then if the EU can work their problems out and the corporate tax is reformed to compete with other Western nations the long term investors will be rewarded.
I could write a few dozen more posts on a dozen topics where Obama has fought to improve America.
yet nothing has improved. waging war on success usually means that things don't improve.
also if you were following the market yesterday there was a 400 point drop because the market has no faith that obama can get congress to pass any type of bill to stop the fiscal cliff scenerio.
I would have to agree with them as well.
ran into this just this morning and thought this was interesting.
Yeah then we can have a dozen different threads about how bad Obama is doing in his lame duck term. Sounds much better..
At least we can limit those to one topic and some topics related to that topic. Now that the election is over it's just a gish gallop of anything ever campaigned on ever
I could write a few dozen more posts on a dozen topics where Obama has fought to improve America. Or we can have a third thread on abortion.
Teenage pregnancies are the lowest since the 40's by the way.
If you are going to discriminate services to people based on race, religion, sexuality, military affiliation, gender on religious grounds you need to establish yourself as a religious organization.

-312 != -400
Stock Market doubled under Obama, so we'll see where this goes.
