  • posted a message on What trait bothers you most about an opponent?
I don't like opponents who act disrespectful/super serious at regular REL events. Types of behavior I don't like:

    - talking smack about card choices/plays
    - rules lawyering
    - pre-emptive winner's "GG" or asking for a concession while the game is being played, but before the game is actually over
    - moaning about opponent topdecks

This is the reason why I don't go to FNM at a certain store anymore.

I have only drafted M13, M14 & M15. In two drafts of M15, I have enjoyed it more than M14. M14 seemed to too gimmicky for me. Losing to Naya slivers or the Angelic Accord deck was not fun for me.

At the moment, I still prefer M13 over M15, but I will have to wait until I can draft M15 with people I know, to see which set is ultimately more fun for me.

I went 3-1 at today's prerelease, picking black again. The seeded rare was Ob Nixilis, Unshackled. I opened Ajani Steadfast, Spectra Ward, Polymorphist's Jest, Genesis Hydra, and Shivan Reef in my other packs. I didn't have enough white playables (only 5 white creatures total) or enough black playables to make up for the lack of white playables, so I ended up going blue/black evasion, splashing the Ajani Steadfast off two Evolving Wilds and a Plains.

I got a first round bye. My match loss was to a BG player with Garruk, Apex Predator, Nissa, Worldwaker, and an Ob Nixilis, Unshackled of his own. I mulled to 5 the first game. I mulled to 6 second game, lost to Garruk, Apex Predator churning out too many beast tokens for me to handle.

I went a prerelease today, picked black. The seeded rare was In Garruk's Wake (blech). I opened Ob Nixilis, Unshackled, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, Genesis Hydra, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in my other packs.

I went 3-1. I lost third round to a WU deck featuring Chasm Skulker, Spectra Ward and Soul of Theros, among other things. I lost the first game to Spectra Ward on Frost Lynx. I lost the second game to miscounting. The WU deck went undefeated in matches/games, as did another guy playing UR.

I'm playing in another prerelease tomorrow, picking black again.

how do we beat b/w tokens?????

If you're playing RUG twin, Anger of the Gods works nicely, assuming their tokens haven't gotten bigger than 3/3.

I've been running RUG Twin for the last few months around here in New England, and have a few things I've been trying out that I'd like some opinions on.

My maindeck is pretty standard, but just running a Thrun and a Keranos maindeck in the orignal slot where 2 ooze were. They obv aren't that great vs combo/aggro decks, but they are great vs your toughest matchups where ooze/v clique just got bolted/terminated/sac'd to lili. I'm also running a Spellskite and twisted image main over probes. I've always not liked probes and only felt they were warranted when I wanted to combo out blindly.

Have people really liked the 1/2 of Tec edges or des lighthouse in TarmoTwin? The mana just seems really tight most of the time.

I've been trying out 2 magma spray and an Izzet Staticaster in the sideboard over running AOTG. I'd found the sorcery speed to be a big problem vs Affinity (manlands) and being able to snapcaster the magma sprays vs pod has been great. It also gives you additional ways to win goyf wars (obv not the staticaster).

I've been off and on with 2 tec edges or 2 blood moons in the board. Blood moon is obviously higher impact, but gets countered/discarded easily where tec edges obv aren't.

    Thoughts?

I've been playing RUG Twin (mostly Patrick Dickmann's list, with a few modifications) since March 2014. I haven't played a lot of tournaments with it (six total) but I try to go to the store to playtest it every week. The meta at the store is relatively varied (UWR control, Storm, Melira Pod, Kiki-Pod, Merfolk, Mono-U Tron, Mono-Green Devotion, RDW). I run into Mono-U Tron *every* week though, so I've been trying out different forms of land hate.

Tectonic Edge has been valuable for me against Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Celestial Colonnade, Gavony Township and Academy Ruins.

I've tried out Blood Moon but it feels like this also hurts RUG Twin too much, due to the low number of basics and different color mana requirements in RUG Twin. Cryptic Command is nearly impossible to play with Blood Moon.

I've tried out Spreading Seas which is nice since it's a two mana cantrip. It seems like a decent turn two counter to a Tron piece.

I even put a copy of Sowing Salt in my sideboard just for mono-U tron. The one time I had it on my deck, I went Sowing Salt into Snapcaster Mage->Sowing Salt a few turns later, but still ended up losing due to not drawing any combo gas and dying to Wurmcoil Engine into Mindslaver into Sundering Titan.

This is the playmat I currently use. It's not Magic-related per se but I think it looks cool and haven't seen anyone else with one so far.

  • posted a message on Deck Carrying/ Storage
I'm currently using an Everki Titan laptop backpack. It's got three roomy compartments. I can comfortably store six Ultra Pro mana flip boxes in the first compartment, two trade binders + land box in the the second compartment, and my dice/counters/snacks in the third compartment. The downside is that it's quite large, so I have to take the backpack off and carry it in my hands when walking through small aisles, lest I accidentally knock something down while wearing the backpack.

  • posted a message on JBT came and went pretty quickly huh?
I don't have a lot of draft experience, only having started drafted with M13.

I don't like JBT that much, though I do enjoy it more than BTT. I used to draft 1-2 times a week on Magic Online, but since BTT came out I stopped playing on Magic online entirely. Now I just stick to the casual FNM draft.

I'm looking forward to M15 draft.

Anime Imports added a weekly Modern tournament at 4 pm on Thursdays. They're also doing a Modern GPT at 2 pm on Saturday 6/7 (in place of the usual weekly Saturday Modern tournament).

Also there's a Modern 1k at Versus Games at noon on Sunday 6/8.

I don't think I have time to go to a "long" tournament this weekend, but I'm going to try to be at Anime Imports for Modern on Saturdays.

  • posted a message on Shout out to the over 30 FNMers
35 here (turning 36 in September), unmarried, no kids. I started playing around Revised, stopped after Weatherlight, because of Everquest/Dark Age of Camelot/World of Warcraft (I still play World of Warcraft two to three nights a week). I came back to Magic during Mirrodin Besieged, but didn't play in any tournaments until the M13 prerelease.

My ex-girlfriend hated Magic, so I rarely played Magic, aside from FNM. Nowadays, I currently play in draft/Standard tournaments an average of two nights a week. If I want to play Magic outside of the LGS FNM I'm looking at a 30 minute drive (one-way). Typically the people I play against are teenagers/college kids who play in tournaments four to five nights a week. I know I can't commit that much time to the game, but I try my best.

Regarding the playmat question: I was stoked when I won my LGS Theros and Born of the Gods Game Days. There's a competitive store (30 minute drive) that does monthly 1k constructed tournaments that give out custom playmats for Top 8, but I have not played any constructed tournaments there due to wanting to get more practice before I commit 40 dollars plus six to eight hours on a "serious" constructed tournament.

Modern has been picking up lately in the Bay Area. They have weekly Modern tournaments on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Versus Games, and Saturdays at 2 p.m. at Anime Imports. They also started doing a monthly weekend Modern tournament at Versus Games, usually on Sundays, with a 1k minimum prize pool.

  • posted a message on Do you Still get Nervous?
I've been playing in Magic tournaments for about two years. I usually only play regular REL events (I rarely play at GP's or GPT's etc), so there's not much at stake. That being said, I am generally laid back at the beginning of tournaments. I don't get nervous until I'm in the finals, because it feels more mentally rewarding to me to say I went 4-0 instead of 3-1.

I think the best way to get over nervousness in tournaments is just to play in more tournaments, to get more experience playing so the decision making processes are more automatic. Also, playing in more tournaments means that losing in one tournament won't feel like the end of the world.
