Ah, well I assumed the Jace was one of the 4/5 you had playsets of. Well good work then!

    3) JTMS is not great vs fast linear decks. I don't think it will skew the meta as much as people are fearing. Control decks under-performed at the PT (in terms of conversion rates).

This isn't the problem. He is great against everything else so he is just further incentive to play those fast decks. If you aren't one of those fast decks, you either better have jace, or just concede you are going to lose to jace and try to be good against the fast linear decks looking to go under him.

SFM is next in the line, hopefully.

Don't hold your breath. It was already next in line (behind BBE) and just got skipped. I highly doubt they want stoneblade in the format when it was one of the most oppressive decks of all time. In my opinion the Jace unban just seals SFM's fate to rot on the banned list.

I better not see another blue mage on here complaining.

Glad they are willing to make unbans but I can't help be disappointed that the Jace unban means we aren't going to get SFM when I think white was in more need of help than blue.

    RIP SFM...

EDIT: I am really shocked Jace got released but I guess with the two recent reprints I shouldn't be. This pretty much digs a permanent grave for SFM though, which is a huge bummer.

A question the letter of [CARD]Liliana, heretical Healer[\CARD] when it becomes planeswalker your devotion of black mana still counts?

No, it does not have a mana cost.

You know how they talked about unbanning a card in Modern... and now there's JTMS as a face card on a Masters set due for release in a bit over a month... I hope they're not related.

Highly unlikely. The set and packaging would've had to be in development quite awhile ago for them to work out the logistics for a March 16th release. Modern has changed way too rapidly recently for them to be able to plan this out 8+ months in advance.

Based on the day 1 numbers (the only complaint I can possibly see are the top 3 decks are all very aggressive, but we expected that), what does this do for both BBE and SFM's chances of an unban?

Looks like SFM could MAYBE slot into 6 of the top 15 decks but you've got max 2 that would consider BBE.

    Thats something I wonder on.

Do more people actually care about who wins, or the decks that win and the matches we see?

I honestly couldnt care less about the individual players, I follow decks, I want decks or styles, to archetypes, to win. The players dont matter to me in the least.

I root for Wescoe because he seems like a genuine and cool dude and usually sticks to his guns. I respect him, but other than that I just want to see good and exciting matches. I don't even care what the decks are, much less the players, as long as the games are close and interesting to watch.

Yeah, I wanted to respond as well, but you basically covered it. There is a ton of design space still open to a common only format and I generally find at least 1 card from every new set for my pauper cube. There are tons of strategies using tons of cards and even more out there waiting to be discovered. The post just seems like it is from someone who doesn't play or really understand the format.

I love pauper, probably been my favorite constructed format for years. It feels like you are playing a format with power level somewhere between modern and legacy without having to worry about reserved list cards or other $100+ staples. Even if the format gains a ton of traction I don't see staples going for more than $20 and there are just so many playable decks in the format that I don't even see that being a common occurrence.

Really anything that brings more love to the format I am good with. I have basically all the staples in paper already so of course I don't mind it getting a bit more expensive but regardless it is as cheap as any non-rotating format and will continue to be regardless of how popular it is.

EDIT: My tempo brethren from the modern subforums will love the tempo strategies available. The blue mages will just be thrilled to have all their best spells legal.

Nearly all the cards that are standard legal will drop in value when they rotate. Cards that have some use in older formats will maintain some value and grow steadily over time. The Shadow duels are nearly strictly worse versions of other lands used in older formats so that is why they are dirt cheap. There just isn't much reason to use them in modern or EDH (two of the biggest sources of card value, along with casual). botanical sanctum has use in these formats and is part of a cycle where one of the lands is +$20 for non foil versions (blackcleave cliffs). Sanctum is much newer and has a lot more copies in circulation but if some modern deck appears in a few years that wants access to both green and blue on turn 1 then I could see it being a $10 land. A foil would probably be somewhere in the $25 to $35 range.

All the above is speculation though and it is really up to you if you think it is worth it to hold on to a particular card, but in 99% of cases cards lose value post rotation.

At first I thought the gsz talk was ridiculous but I have to say there have been some good points. The thing I think that keeps it banned is that it could make games play out the same too often and Wizards doesn’t want that. Regardless of power level, collected company and ancient stirrings still have some randomness involved and chord takes some set up keeping it from being so consistent.

The Jeskai control lists going around right now use a single secure the wastes and a single torrential gearhulk as their nonland finishers.

We need to really look at the point being made here, Torrential Gearhulk and Secure the Wastes are not Modern Staples, they appear in less than 25% of the current posted decklists. You need to compare Stoneforge Mystic to the current competitive slot, which is Geist of Saint Traft coming in at 57% as a 3x in the posted decklists. Jeskai would run 4x Stoneforge to have a competitive chance to gain tempo on the unfair decks.

Mono White D&T Would 100% remove Leonin Arbiter, and run disruption in the form of Aven Mindcensor and Sword of Feast and Famine, that's not even debatable.

Abzan would not run Stoneforge Mystic, they are a Liliana of the Veil deck. Stoneforge Mystic does not suit that plan whatsoever. Thoughtseize and Inquisition of Kozilek are sufficient disruption, the competitive slot in that deck is Tireless Tracker and Lingering Souls. Abzan is a deck that doesn't need the lifegain, and can't effectively use the card advantage, and is already taxed on tapping out each and every turn at Sorcery speed.

There are a ton of smart people on this thread, we cannot allow basic and obvious misunderstanding of the Modern format to skew how we view individual cards.

EDIT; Just to make a point very clear; Stoneforge Mystic would not make cards like Torrential Gearhulk irrelevant, Torrential Gearhulk makes Torrential Gearhulk irrelevant in the context of the Modern format. This double sided-argument was used against Bloodbraid Elf for years, it's a nothing but a baseless argument in the name of "diversity"

In order to reach the best version of "diversity" is to clarify what that term means. What we do know, is that WotC have acknowledged Archetypes, Color, and Sideboard Slots. What they prioritize, no one knows for sure.

Where are you getting your statistics? Considering we don’t have a reliable way to gather them I am skeptical. All the top performing jeskai lists I’ve seen have been on the 3 snap, 1 gearhulk creature plan with no geists or quellers to switch for sfm. They are different decks.
