I think this would be an excellent idea. We have the space, and the variant subforum hardly ever has any viewers, and that forum persists to this day. Only good can come of having a place to shove all these SCD threads and removing that obese, ineffective thread.
I don't run good ol' C-Sphinx because I feel it, much like Primeval Titan, warps the game around it. People often argue "Oh, well, the table will answer it and you'll draw 2-4 max". ...And if they don't? The sphinx gives insurmountable card advantage to any player with one. You can never draw more than the player with Consecrated Sphinx, and if you give it one go around the table, it becomes invincible because the owner likely drew into countermagic during the 8-10 extra draw steps he got from one card.
I'm not saying Sphinx should have been banned like Prime Time, but I believe it is indisputably on a similar absurd power level and anyone who argues differently is a flipping moron.
I would go with the precon. Purphoros will drop either soon or within the next two years. The precons have a lot of value in them and become more difficult to get later.
You could always buy the grixis precon, sell the true-name nemesis, and buy a Purphoros and then some.
Oh no, guys, I already have a Purphoros! I just need the very niche cards for the deck to replace the goblin chaff. But I take it the precon is the better idea.
You don't use his infinities I take it? In that case I would probably make Purphoros. You do get to play some pretty awesome cards when you go down that road (like Hellion Eruption).
Yeah, no infinite combos in this meta. Purphoros seems better than the precons, and worst come to worst, I'll grab one in a month or so at Target.
I've been using a Purphoros deck since the day after release. It is a huge threat on the board, but winning is relatively easy if no one bothers you. That being said, if the commander is tucked you have minimal options for recovery and almost none for alternate win conditions.
If you want to be a presence in every game, I would recommend the precon over Purphoros.
If you want to surprise your playgroup with a win out of nowhere and then be the target every other time you play the deck and have to work hard for a win, then get Purphoros.
I mean, Krenko does the same thing; Win unpredictably and in an epic manner. True, Purphoros is too awesome to handle, but I hate that my mono red cannot possibly kill more than 3 other players. Also, I hate getting the God hand with Krenko and killing off someone turn 5 then have to force them to watch the rest of us play for an hour. Purphy is very even.
Why would you switch to Purphoros from Krenko? Are you just tired of Krenko? Purphoros, in my testing at least, has just seemed like a less good Krenko to me.
See above. I do like Krenko, but I don't like playing it in multiplayer.
For $20, I can convert my Krenko EDH into a Purphy deck (I already have the expensive red staples, it's just jank rares like Myr Incubator that elude me)
OR
I can go to Walmart and grab a precon (I'm thinking Nature of the Beast, because Marath looks awesome)
I don't have cash for both, so which would you fellows recommend?
I hate the frigging thing. I play a Krenko/Purphoros deck and losing the creatures I need to play to win is bad enough, but watching the Esper player play more goblins than me is insult to injury.
I kill it on sight. It's good enough to force me to actually target something other than a player, and that alone is a testament to its power and irritation capabilities.

I don't know... I mean, I like the sig but all that flare applied to the generals makes me feel like J.J. Abrams designed his signature.

I'm aware. My current red deck, Krenko, cannot kill the entire table. That's why I wanted to build Purphoros.
