    Quote from incarna

Now, when you’re talking 5-drops, the counterargument to Assemble the Legion is Big Garruk. The problem I have found with Garruk is that the tokens can’t get by chumps and he will invariably die to a restoration angel in 2 or 3 turns. While both Assemble the Legion and Garruk are vulnerable to O-ring and D-sphere, only Garruk is vulnerable to creatures. Additionally, while Garruk gives you 3 power on board every turn if left unmolested, Assemble the Legion gives you X+Y power AND X+Y DAMAGE every turn where X is the number of tokens you had in play previously and Y is the number of tokens you put in play on your turn. People THINK Garruk “does something” when he hits the field because he puts a token in play. Actually, unless that token is a blocker (which it is not when you’re in the control matchup), Garruk and Assemble the Legion both “do something” in terms of damage on the same turn – the turn AFTER they come into play.

Now, I will close with a reminder that this is mostly theory and I will not have an opportunity to really put the theory to the test until tomorrow night’s FNM. Goldfish who land T4 Verdict every game and casual opponents hardly count as a real test.

Assemble doesn't draw you cards. Garruk doesn't just have to come in and make a beast, with 4 Thrag's and some Thundermaws, or even a flipped huntmaster or ****, a resto angel in a tight spot, Garruk can come down and fill your hand. Not to mention, if they tapped out for Verdict and you come back with a PH, what are they going to do? Naya midrange does not have to overextend to win. T2 smiters and Reckoners put on immense pressure, and running huntmaster & restoration angel means you can (and should) let huntmaster flip as often as possible. These keep resources in your hand and let you not only out value control on the board, but retain better hand advantage. Cards like Domri do just that as well (though I do side him out for big garruk). Assemble the legion is notably less impactful than Garruk, only because if they do have the sphere or o-ring, at least with PH you still have a 3/3 beast. Assemble you tapped out for no reason.

Permission should not be an issue with a creature heavy build and caverns, especially with so many humans. The only real issue is if the game drags on to where a big sphinx's is cast. Never more on sphinx is a great way to keep them from closing out the long games, but control decks just durdle right now during the early game. Apart from american dropping Reckoners, esper and u/w flash have pathetic openers (cycle, cycle, bolas, cycle, resto bolas) they're trying to just buy time till they can wipe, sphinx and win. The better way to beat them is not to slow down and try to out-counter the control decks, but to remain aggressive and put them on tilt early on. When you compare what the PW's in Green give us, it just seems more logical than Assemble. My teammate runs american and we playtest all the time. I've yet to find a control matchup I find unfavorable, especially post board.

There's very little blue can do if they tap out for verdict, you eat it, drop PH next turn with a 3/3 beast on board...then proceed to drop another 5 drop and draw 5 cards...now with a thrag or thundermaw on field, a beast token and a full grip.

Boros Charm, Relentless, Primal Hunter, Conscripts...we have every answer we need to control. I love when UWr taps out for assemble thinking it will buy them time only for me to be sitting on o-ring, aurelia or thundermaw. IMO it's just not the value a midrange build is looking for.

Edit: not to mention Kessig Wolf Run....chumps should not be an issue

So after playing a decent amount of games with this deck, my pet peeve is now Angel of Serenity. Too many times i've been winning vs Naya or Bant and they slam a AoS and turn the game around.

For this week's FNM, I'm gonna try this package for AoS matchups.

    2x Sylvan Primordial in SB
They go AoS? I go bigger.
6/8 Reach beats 5/6 Flying, and we get to nuke a Kessig Wolf Run or planeswalker, especially relevant vs Naya or Wolfrun Bant.

1x Sever The Bloodline in MB and another 1x in SB.

along with the usual 2x Slaughter Games

The bane of Jund last format was AoS and Reanimator decks (usually one in the same). With the core of Jund not changing...this matchup didn't change. Relying on Slaughter Games will only work after g1, and at that point removing the AoS isn't stopping Thundermaw or Aurelia from killing you. It was hard to be reactive enough last standard, and with the range of decks emerging, even harder now. Jund is always a great choice while the meta sorts itself out, but kind of finds a unfavorable slot as lists solidify. My experience with the colors, at least.

She's very non-conventional. And I can definitely see NOT running her.

Smiter is a star in a lot of matchups. But other than against Liliana, I don't think I've ever said "I wish I had a Smiter right now". I wish I could fit 3 in the main again. But I'd rather have the removal. I might...might take them out for Reckoners depending on where the meta ends up shifting. But against Midrange and Aggro, Reckoner just shines...and I think we've already covered how strong he is with Domri.

I've found I like a t2 smiter more than a t2 reckoner (I know, shocking). If an aggro misses their t1 play, they have no qualms about spearing that reckoner. They literally can't answer smiter with one card (I've yet to see a MD mizzium). Of course Boros is nutty to get online against aggro, and AWESOME with domri, but I just feel more in control of the game with loxodon. It's to the point where I'm cutting reckoners (having a forest in the manabase already makes me nervous about a full set) to keep my loxodon's up.

Currently I am playing a WG human deck, however, I do feel that it is underperforming as of late and felt like making a change to it.
    So, the new list:

Ideally, the deck is a WGB human aggro build, however I have yet to test the deck in this form.
So any and all criticisms help, no matter how trivial.

I would maindeck abrupt decay and tragic slips, just due to you not being able to deal with a Reckoner or Smiter properly. Cards like Frontline Medic will also help in this regard....but I really feel like splashing red over black for Burning-Tree and Lightning Mauler is your better bet.

You may also want to consider a 1/1 split of Liliana and Relentless, as Lili can be heavy to cast w/ only 11 black sources. If you went red, Domri is a much better PW than Lili in a creature deck. Lili really shines when you can get use from your own graveyard, or are generating value on your board, otherwise she's an awkward-to-cast removal spell. If your t1 Champion gets knocked off before it can become a threat, dropping Lili onto an empty board is pretty un-intimidating.

I'm thinking about cutting Aurelia from the top end of my deck. I curve out from Pilgrims --> Reckoners/Smiters --> Huntmaster --> Thragtusk/Hellkite.

I feel like the deck is too top-heavy in this super-aggro day and age. I was thinking about putting in more Spears, O-rings, or maybe even another Bonfire or two?

Has anyone else here cut Aurelia from their Naya mid-range list?

I don't think she needs to be cut. I've yet to have her stick and actually lose. I run a 2/2 split of her and Thundermaw and I don't find that to be too "top heavy" considering almost every other point in the curve is life gain (especially after boarding in Centaur Healers). A turn 2 Smiter, Reckoner, or Healer is going to keep them at bay for Huntmaster & Resto shenanigans to control the board, while Aurelia finishes off the game. I board her out against aggro, sure, and the mirror, so she can't be snatched with Conscripts, but in every other match-up she's insane. If you're worried about not having a t2 smiter/reckoner/healer I'd look into 4 Pilgrim 2 Arbor Elf to improve the chances.

There's been a little Naya hate from the pros as of late, and I wanted to share my build that I've been performing very well with at FNMs and am taking to a local 5k this weekend. So far the only actual "bad" matchup is the mirror, just because mirror matches are tough no matter what build you run. Against the top players, namely Human Reanimator, Junk, Aggro and UWx builds, I've had enormous success rates.

Admitedly, I'm in the process of picking up more Reckoners which would replace a MD oblivion ring and probably 1 huntmaster. Out of the board I side Healers, Spears & Mortars for aggro and Primal Hunters, Serenity and Witchbane orb for control/Jund matches. I have crypts for GY hate and Conscripts gets boarded in against anything non-aggro.

My mana base I'm not dead set on, but I have no trouble w/ a t1 Pilgrim and have yet to run into a Reckoner issue.

The stars of the deck so far have been Domri, Boros Charm and resto shenanigans. I dispatched two very good esper control players just due to Domri, and Boros charm wins so many games. I'm sure I'm saying things people already know, but just wanted to give some insight into the build.

I much prefer this build over the Gyre Sage and Flinthoof build...I've never felt out of control of a match (unless flooded or screwed) any my early game and late game are on point. The core of resto+huntmaster+thrag is obviously very deadly midrange.

Just wanted to put my build out there incase anyone was still looking to run Naya competitively. Don't let Brad Nelson discourage you!!

Boar is usually a 3/3 even with 5 mtns?

I mean, good point. Like I mentioned haven't tested my aggro version a bunch. I very likely could have been cheating and using RBC as mountains that night. Was, how you say, a little blazed Smile

I guess, the mana looks better like

I'm still trying to figure out the manabase because you need green for STRG but red for boar, hellkite, hellrider. That has to be hard to work out.

Is what mine looks like. 2 Wilds = 2 Forest really, and with deathrite that's any color you want. It's not ideal but Cavern on Spirit is necessary, sometimes. I have had a few hands where t2 geist is hard, but boar is always a 3/3 and I've rarely suffered from not having green mana.

Hmmm... so what, 4 Evolving Wilds, 2 Kessig and 2 Caverns?

I basically have the cards for that deck already minus the 2 Hellrider to complete a set of 4. Certainly would be easier to get than the 4 Gravecrawler and 4 Lotleth Troll I would've needed to make the aggro version that Edel did well with a couple weeks ago.

And I imagine the sideboard would be stuff like Conscripts, SG, Duress/AFB, maybe different removal.

At this point I'm just looking for fun decks to play until we get the next set that are easy for me to make.

2 Evolving, 2 Cavern, 1 Kessig. You don't need Kessig as much w/ rancor and hasters.

SB is mainly those cards you listed. I haven't looked into one seriously. I'm pretty happy with my Jund Midrange build, and intend to play that at the few GP's left. This aggro deck is for my fnm's and fun magic. With gatecrash, though, this aggro build I'm running could be super potent. Wish we had more spoiled cards.

You can get away with Rancor? I think I always shy'd away from Rancor with no mana dorks because you couldn't get that turn 2 Giest + Rancor. And I always figured this type of deck would just lose to mid-range for some reason. Or maybe that the 3 color mana base might make this less consistent than zombies.

Any particular reason why you play just one Aristocrat? I believe I only have like 2-3 Hellrider in my collection so I might have to do 3 Aristocrat, 2 Hellrider unless I find more.

I agree. I take a bit of solace in the fact that we're basically splashing white for Resto and maybe Rites... otherwise it's a Jund deck.

Rancor is why the deck doesn't lose to mid-range decks. You can't chump block anymore, and you can use rancor to beat supreme verdict by stacking on one creature. W/ haste & rancor you can play cards behind the curve that still make large impacts. like, t4 can either be a hellrider, FA, or a Boar/Mangler + rancor. It's really the reason I wanted to build green aggro.

1 FA is just me not wanting to play 4 dragons. Without the crawler combo, I didn't want to lean on her, and the Curse is seeing more play in control, and I hate dead cards. She's just really good, and always a bomb. Hellrider, though, with my curve, is better. On the play I can drop him before the verdict and finish off with gas.

I was trying to put together a build that utilized Lotleth Troll and Gravecrawler but basically did the same thing. Now that I have money put down on Aristocrats I basically have all the cards for that deck.

What's your version look like? Does it run Thragtusk and Farseek? Does STRG work like you want him (I've been itching to put him in a deck since rotation)?

The only issue when it comes to building the deck for a tournament is I think the same sort of cards that kill BR Zombies would also kill this deck. But still... seems like fun and you've probably heard me try to at least theoretically get such a build together for the longest time.

No thragtus, no farseek. In fact, the mana is so nice, there's this cute play w/ deathrite shaman & evolving wilds that guarantees my t2 drop. Overgrown -> DRS. Evolving -> sac -> forest/mountian -> remove evolving -> cast STRG/Flinthoof. W/ DRS & Evolving, mana is no problem Smile

    My creatures are

w/ rancor & pillar at 4-ofs and a couple of bonfire.

Flint and Dreg in the same deck is one of the nicest things I've experienced in magic, if the mana is right, you're hands are just so nice. I haven't done a ton of testing, but so far no giant issues and it's a ton of fun. IMO you get a tiny leg up over B/R b/c you have so many 3/3's that they can't burn you out of them, and eventually they'll just be bigger and better than their creatures. Scavenging a Mangler onto a Avenger is also a pretty dynamite play if you can afford it.

Edit: Interesting enough, the only jund builds to take spots at the most recent SCG inv were.

Honestly, our deck is now a 4-color midrange deck, there really isn't anymore jund. They took our best cards, Naya's best cards, and built a better deck then either.

Have people seen a new B/G deck Kibler came up with? B/G fits in our colour, so how about we follow his approach to fit in the fast meta?

I know that in earlier days, there were fast hitting Jund decks leaned heavily on green with Avengers, Geists, Dregs, and few over the top 5 drops. But for some reason, I don't see this kind of deck gets played anymore.

He kinda fizzled out :/ I like the idea of his deck, I'm just not sure it was tuned enough.

I've been playing a haste curve w/ STRG, Flinthoof, Dreg, Hellrider, FA and Thundermaw and it's a ton of fun. There was a similar build that topped a tournament recently.

Dreadbore's ability to kill planeswalkers has saved me in multiple games against Ux control decks. As has its no nonsense ability to kill any creature, with no restrictions attached.

Abrupt Decay is useful in almost every matchup. Against aggro, it's a terminate. Against control, it's going to deal with o-rings, d-spheres, keyrunes, chromatic lanterns. Against UW Flash, it kills runechanters pike.

Right, they're both good against control. So in a meta filled with R/B aggro they're probably best sideboard. You can kill creatures with better cards.

    FNM - 14/12/2012

    Round 1 Turbofog

Game 1: I get Deathrite Shaman and Liliana out, making him discard and getting rid of all his flashback cards before he gets value out of them. I cast some threats while he durdles, he dies fairly quickly.
Game 2: Exactly the same as first game.

    1-0

    Round 2 - GW Aggro

Game 1: He gets turn 1 pilgrim, turn 2 makes a 2/2 token with Selesnya Charm and attaches 2 rancors to it then starts beating me with it. I farseek turn 2, and manage to get a rakdos keyrune and huntmaster into play to block and keep me alive. I kill the knight by blocking and he plays wolfir avenger (with 2 rancors on it). Thragtusk along with a searing spear and ultimate price buys me time from forcing him to regenerate his Avenger repeatedly, but I go down to about 5. I manage to get Olivia out and steal his 7/3 Avenger. I have a Garruk PH, a Thundermaw Hellkite and something else in my hand. I'm wary of a Selesnya Charm, but I play the Hellkite anyway and swing for lethal.

Game 2: I side pillars of flame and garruk relentless into my deck, and take out PH, Rakdos's Return, and Liliana. I draw a good opener with a lot of removal. I manage to get some blockers down and kill some of his guys. At some point I get Olivia down, and he has an Avenger and a Resto Angel in play while I have Olivia and a 3/3 beast token. I'm on the offensive, having killed his early threats (he got a turn 2 Loxodon Smiter that I promptly abrupt decayed). He blocks my 3/3 beast with Resto Angel, I ping it to death with Olivia and kill him.

    2-0

    Round 3: BR Zombies/Aggro

Game 1: He mulls to 5, completely floods out. Eventually he gets an aristocrat or two out, but I dreadbore it next turn. I finish him off fairly quickly.
Game 2: He mulls to 6 (I do too, keeping a hand entirely of removal) and does nothing for the first 4-5 turns. Same as last game.

I got really lucky here because this guy was one of the top 10 people in terms of planeswalker points here in England last year, and usually 4-0s where I play. If he'd not drawn the worst cards possible he probably would have trampled over me easily.

    3-0

    Round 4: UWb control

Game 1: He can't find his 4th land he needs for Jace and friends, meanwhile I completely flood out and have 4 removal cards in hand. I play two Huntmasters which he promptly removes. Eventually I have about 13 lands and didn't draw a single threat in that time. He mills me to death with two Nephalia Drownyards.

Game 2: I have the nuts draw. I get Deathrite Shaman out on turn 1, I am completely okay for mana, I get Liliana out on turn 3, I Rakdos Return for x=4 - making him discard his entire hand, I play a Thragtusk followed up next turn by a Garruk PH drawing me 5 cards. Completely blitzkreiged him.

Game 3: The closest match. I get an early underworld connections which he neglected to destroy with his ghost quarter for 5-6 turns, netting me huge card advantage. We play back and forth for a while with threats and answers. He kills my creatures, I kill his planeswalkers. Eventually I win the card advantage attrition war and he's left with 1 card while I have a Thragtusk and Huntmaster on the board (with another one of each in my hand) and I manage to topdeck a duress to get rid of the last card in his hand: a supreme verdict. I then kill him.

    4-0

Congrats man, I really like your inclusion of Lili MB. She is so awesome.

You may want to think about moving some amount of pillars to your MB? 2/4 decks you played were aggro, it'd be nice to have that card against them g1.

    Just a thought Smile

    Nice FNM!
