Bribery, Acquire, Telemin Performance, Knowledge Exploitation, and Treacherous Urge are some of my favorite steal effects.

Mindleech Mass is fun, but expensive.

    Body Double for gy tricks.

The issue with doing PW cards for Urza, Serra, Leshrac, and the other absurdly powerful beings of Magic lore is that unless the card is a ten-mana "you win the game" card, it wouldn't be doing justice to the pure absurd power level of the oldwalkers. Oldwalkers were gods. Not Theros "kinda sorta" gods. They were completely unbeatable unless you were one or something similar (Yawgmoth).

Imagine that Jace Signature Spellbook containing Jace, the Mind Sculptor and turning him from the Wallet Sculpter to the Peoples Sculpture. Crash the market. Eliminate the bourgeoisie.

I think the more likely scenario is that since he's basically 8x the MSRP of the spellbook every single one gets bought out by scalpers or horded and no one sees them actually make it to the shelves. I'm probably pre-ordering one the second it shows up since at worse I'm getting a jace themed counterspell reprint from the jace vs chandra duel deck in foil, Fact or Fiction Jace duel deck reprint in foil, and possibly a Jace Beleren. I highly doubt they are going to put the most powerful version of jace in the FTV unless they literally hold the spoilers to a week before release.

    ^THIS^.

Anyone expecting JtMS in a $20 MSRP product is deluding themselves.

Why? I bought a JTMS at $35 a few years ago in FTV:20. I've since sold him because while he's useful in Commander, I got more value by trading him away for a whole slew of cards on my want list.

Understandably the FTV printing was worth a lot less than the other versions, and in the long run it made little impact on his market value, but it sets the precedent that Wizards aren't afraid to print high value cards in something like this. Honestly, I wish they'd exercise that right a little more often, but meh.

My concerns are him being the poster boy for Masters 25, and having already had a FTV printing both hurt the odds of us getting a mass reprint in this sort of product.

Because his current FTV printing is $141.23, last checked?

If they did put him in there, not a single actual player would see that product. It would be pre-sold and sent on eBay long before they ever get to a player.

You'll notice I said "was worth". Past tense. FTV printings typically hold less value than their counterparts anyway due to the different and largely disliked foiling process, it's only the insane desire for that specific card that's allowed the FTV certain to hold as much value as it's other printings.

His current price reflects a knee-jerk reaction to his sudden unbanning, and while I expect his overall price to raise considerably from where it was before the ban lift, it will level back out once the initial rush of demand settles down.

My point though was that they have printed high value cards in similar products in the past, so it's not crazy to think it could happen again. You're not wrong in that if we see FTV-level supply for the spellbook series, it will do nothing to impact the price, if it's even reprinted at all.

Here's hoping they print JTMS and Vryn's Prodigy (which has managed to elude me, still) and give us duel-deck levels of product that you can happily pick up at your local Target. Wink

I'm with Gutterstorm on this one. There are 55 some odd vampires in your colors at 2 CMC or less, so I feel like you shouldn't have to be pared down to just these choices. I can't really condone any of these outside of limited, honestly.

Edit: Took a glance at your list, and if you want cheap tribal options, I'd go with Vampire Nighthawk , Pawn of Ulamog or Arrogant Bloodlord even if they are 3 CMC.

For 2 CMC, you're missing Gatekeeper of Malakir which can provide some utility in an aggro shell.

If this was costed at 4 or maaaaaybe 5 CMC and read "As an additional cost, sacrifice any number of creatures. All creatures get -X/-X where X is the total per of all sacrificed creatures" then I think it might even be rare worthy.

It could have also been a similarly costed enchantment and read something like "1BB, sacrifice a creature: all creatures get -X/-X, etc" and still have at least been an interesting card.

I would at least given it a shot in Ghave. As is, it's wasted effort on cardboard.

I was piloting Animar and had a face down Willbender in play when someone tried to Deepglow Skate a freshly played Elspeth, Knight-Errant. I was delighted to gift his "double counters" trigger to Animar, so then he responded with Sudden Spoiling and learned about the weirdness that is Morph on the stack.
So... he decided to completely waste his Sudden Spoiling?

Pretty much. His thinking was that casting it in response to the Willbender trigger would shut it off and prevent me from stealing the Deepglow Skate trigger. We had to explain to him that even with split second, once the morph creature is face up it's ability resolves.

Ahhh, the hero that once reversed a Sudden Spoiling, the hidden reminder that Split Second isn't actually the top of the stack chain (despite being technically on top).

Funny you should mention that, I played a game last week where I was piloting Animar and had a face down Willbender in play when someone tried to Deepglow Skate a freshly played Elspeth, Knight-Errant. I was delighted to gift his "double counters" trigger to Animar, so then he responded with Sudden Spoiling and learned about the weirdness that is Morph on the stack.

I don't know that I've ever paid attention to this card. I think it could easily slot into a Sunforger package and be a neat piece of tech against a lot of common cards/strategies.

What are the thoughts on Riverwise Augur? It fills the same role as Sea Gate Oracle/Raven Familiar, and is even arguably more powerful. I run all the typical bounce effects for Animar, so in the right circumstances I could see him generating tons of card advantage, but 4 for a Brainstorm on a stick seems overcosted, even if we can typically rely on Animar's cost reduction.

I guess the question is, will he generate enough reliable CA to warrant a slot over similar proven alternatives?

I still run Hinder and it's mentioned cousin Memory Lapse in Daxos of Meletis to potentially set up a juicy target to steal from my opponent with Daxos. It's fallen from grace, for sure, but it's still got some niche uses.

Kras'thul bothers me simply because it has hexproof on an engine/combo general. I would only be slightly more comfortable with that commander than Narset, since at least you need to draw/mill the combo pieces and it's vulnerable to grave hate. Very scary with cards like Mindslicer, Sun Titan, Blade Splicer et. al. or any other low-power creature with ETB token support, and of course Karmic/Reveillark since it's power-based reanimation.

That's a fair point. I haven't actually gotten to play with him at all, but I wanted to provide some sort of protection since one Bojuka Bog can shut down the whole engine. Maybe something like "1: Sacrifice a creature, Kras'thul gains indestructible/hexproof/etc until end of turn" to allow for some kind of built in protection. I think dropping permanent Hexproof could also justify bringing him down to cmc 5. Thanks for the feedback!

Whimfeaster is a bit odd, but it definitely feels like a punisher R/B card in the same vein as Kaervek the Merciless , in that opponents could be tempted to keep feeding him and losing CA to stick him with the stats that are easier to deal with. I feel like you could add something like "If Whimfeaster has more than 4 +1/+1 counters, spells that target Whimfeaster cost {3} more" or a similar damage effect if he's targeted with a spell. That gives incentive to keep feeding him as opposed to just having him eat removal.

Vaylesh is awesome. Add a little Rotlung Reanimator and Xathrid Necromancer for spice and you've got a beast on your hands.

I like the flavor on the horseman cards. They're well powered without feeling op. Call the Horseman is a little silly, but would still be tons of fun to cast from the command zone and Reiterate a few times.

Here's my entry I made after we were let down with the lack of an Esper zombie leader in HOU. Ironically, I think he and Vaylesh would be good pals.

I considered this card in a Saskia "combat matters" build that included Tana, the Bloodsower but I never finished the list. Worth noting that it goes infinite with Breath of Fury with each enchantment on a different creature.
Pretty sure you need a haste source too.

D'oh, was thinking Breath granted haste for some reason. Oh well.

Oh man, I remember throwing this bad boy on Watchwolf alongside Arma-cloak and smash face back in the old sleeveless, 60 card kitchen table days. Good times.
