been playing 3-azor 1-dimir since i created esper control in GTR, dimir charms been a fantastic singleton, and the variety gives me so much reach in optionalities it's delicious.

I still keep azorius charm due to the large presence of midrange, azorius charm still has alot of relevance for me in that situation, and because of my maindeck ashiok/memory adept, i'm easily capable of dealing with virtually and threat. azor charming a thassa, then dropping ashiok and playing said thassa feels so good.

also in relation: charming a dude, the dimir charm to dump the dude and force them to topdeck unneeded manasources.

Wrong. Black can do anything if the price is high enough (not just cmc). Though there is a significant lack of enchantment and artifact removal despite this clause in blacks slice of the pie

There are a couple artifact destruction cards in black's colours. They're quit old, but still there.

I think people are over-speculating this. It simply states that R&D wants to colour shift sylvan library to black or blue, which makes sense. Yeah, it definitely would give esper a HUGE boost, and probably put it over-the-top, so no, i don't think a functional sylvan library would be the brightest idea in this block, but hey, stranger lhurgoyfs have happened.

It would probably have to be a planeswalker-enchantment. Such a thing is probably technically possible with the rules, and this block is probably the only time we will have the opportunity to get such a thing.

tezzeret, the seeker, tezzeret, agent of bolas, and karn liberated all say nay, planeswalkers do not get secondary card types.

Again. 2 color decks do not want these. There is enough fixing in two colors from lands that do positive things for your deck as opposed to hurting you. This is especially true for allied color that get Manlands already. Unless fetches do something positive for your deck, the fixing isn't worth the life loss in 2 color decks.

And do you really think you get more options for what fetches to play in your 3 color decks by adding the ONS fetches? Are you going to argue you might want to run Marsh Flats in your Jund deck because its cheaper than Wooded Foothills? Or vice versa in a Junk deck? That entire argument is based on you being willing to try to build a competitive deck poorly to save money and invalidates any other argument you make because it's clear you only care about one thing. $$$$

even mono-colour decks want fetchlands. 1 life for deck-thinning without an actual mana investment? yes please. That's simply how good fetches are. deck-thinning AND mana-fixing all in one, based on that alone, every deck, regardless of what deck, wants fetches.

    except tron, self-explanatory.

    Yes.

They stated that they will do duals as a full 10 cycle over the spread of a block from here on out.

Due to the fact they want to support modern, they HAVE to reprint fetches, no ifs, ands, or buts. They want a larger player base for modern, and fetchlands are integral to the modern format.

Sorry legacy players, but your onslaught fetches are going to be reprinted.

I've been playing dimir charm as a singleton since i started playing esper in may (last season)

I'm still playing dimir charm for a reason. it's versatility in options is far too valuable to be taken lightly.

kills an early game threat vs. aggro.

counters sorceries (thoughtseize, rakdos' return, urban evolution, mizzium mortars.)

manipulates card draw for yourself when you need to dig for an answer, or your opponent to get a psuedo time walk effect.

also: i don't run blood baron in my 75. just planeswalkers and Aetherling. the slots baron WOULD take are instead more utility, because aetherling and elspeth can end the game faster and more effectively.

On paper, this guy seems underwhelming, but in playtesting, I'm going to continue having it mained as a singleton in my 75 for the rest of the season. Dimir charm is simply that good of a card. Yeah it's weaker than doom blade or last breath... but it has OPTIONS. options that you don't get playing 4th azorius charm or a last breath or whatever other 2cmc instant.

Oh no! I can't ponder or preordain turn one! whatever shall I do in this nightmarish standard?!

    turn 1 thoughtseize.

I'm fairly certain that R&D is well aware that esper is a deck and they aren't going to give it thoughtseize AND preordain at the same time.

You can't give a zone hexproof. Even if you wrote "cards in your graveyard have hexproof", hexproof wouldn't work on cards. Just use your flavor text as rules text. Also, there are never any permanents in your graveyard.

Regardless, I don't think this card is blue at all. Especially if it concerned with permanent cards. What do you want this card to do?

If a card was printed that said "your graveyard has hexproof" then yes, his zone is hexproof, the comprehensive rules would make sure it could.

Permanents can be in your graveyard. nature's spiral is proof of this.

the card in arguement would be green if it existed though.

it's not broken, but it runs in to the same problem as something like river of tears, a complete cycle actually requires a set of 20 separate lands, because you have to have both versions for every color pair

Incorrect. Technically they could do that if they wanted to, but wizards could also do primary/secondary.

river taps for U normally and B if you play a land. then look at the colour wheel. so those duals would be W-U, U-B, B-R, R-G, etc.

So, I made a couple tweaks to my draw-go list, and put 5 board wipes in my side.

I essentially played magic game day as draw-go to tapout control transformer and Had huge success.... up until final matchup which was big red every time. and i lost because i couldnt answer everything they played, because everything they play needs to be immediately answered.

I'm thinking of cutting alot of my sideboard for mostly point-removal. this should do the trick against big red. chandra's phoenix is still one of the biggest pains for me to deal with, but my list (bottom of page 24) I feel confident going up against any deck except for america and big red.

I put aetherling to the side (cutting obzedat) and put in a memory adept, and it was AMAZING.

Planeswalkers seems great as a way to soak up damage while still providing threats, and I really want to see quicken make a deck, I think quicken would be amazing as a 1 or 2-of in a deck with lingering souls, or even mid-combat flashback supreme verdict seems strong as well.

@blade: how has 26 lands been for you? i went up to 27, 26 still wasn't enough apparently. why duress mainboard? if you can inform me of your meta that would be really helpful, also another card for me to tinker with quicken!

Alright guys, I have a very promising beginning of Esper draw-go. just came back with a 3-1 tournament win at FNM, defeating GP calgary top8 trent playing golgari control.

my only loss was to my roomate, which he bought me a pack of smokes if I conceded.

round 1 was against grixis planeswalkers (the list that got 1st at a pro-tour too lazy to find the exact one, was a known net-decker)

round 2 was against vampire aggro.

round 3 was my free pack of smokes.

    round 4 was golgari control.

all of my matches I played were either 2-0 or 1-0-1. essentially undefeated as esper has a tendency to go to time.

This list I've made from reviewing past winning esper lists and amalgamating what needed to go in and what didn't need to stay. I had 2 augurs in but sold them for tournament entry and kinda thankful as all the decks were relatively slow and augur was unnecessary. Even with Cavern around, my counterspell suite performed admirably. My removal suite answered what I needed to, when it needed to. My control matchups were won by simply milling them out, the aggro match won off jace ultimates.

A very important aspect of my particular variant is the angles of attack, simultaneously using mutavault, drownyard, aetherling, and sphinx's rev all huge threats for the opponent to deal with, while still maintaining the countermagic and removal suite necessary to survive and ensure one of the 3 actual game-ending cards ending the game.

I must say, I'm quite celebratory of Magic's 20th birthday! got the promo dimir charm for my deck, my prize winnings went to getting another snapcaster and, of course national crack-a-pack day.

America and Esper are by far the top 2 control colour pairings.

GP calgary showed that golgari control is a viable archetype as well as mono-r control.

it was people like me that made the blade uncommon.

drafting 11 removal.dec was something they wanted to avoid ALA uncommon DB and don't give me sass of "newer" players DB has been reprinted enough ANYONE can easily find a playset for 10 cents a pop.

its a core set. this is what core sets are SUPPOSED to be like, lots of bad limited cards with some utility spells and a few good rares here and there. its to bind up RTR and introduce Theros. don't like it? then why have you been playing magic for so long? all the core sets are essentially the same.

This is true, and the problem with Hydra now is simply Doom Blade

    simply?

dies to warped physique, ultimate price, mizzium mortars, putrefy, azorius charm(doesn't actually die but still 1-for-1), etc. etc.

he dies to pretty much every relevant removal spell in the format. because of that and the fact he has no immediate impact on the game makes him sup-optimal. honestly, he should come in with 5 counters instead of 4 for survivability. he's going to drop in price and be the junk mythic that he is, like all the hydras before him.

    Several points of note.
    1) If we see more AEtherling, then we will have a hilarious choice when we board in the mirror: Do we board out our AEtherlings for Pithing Needles or for something else, like more cantrips to hit lands? He might also be boarding out his 'lings for Needles and as such your needles will be dead cards...
    2) What Tibalt is saying here is what I've been trying to drill into the heads of half my LGS that thinks Esper is bad without Snaps. You can just 1-for-1 people, maybe 2-for-1 with Wraths, until you hit a Revelation. You don't need fancy card advantage tricks and 2-for-1s all day long.
    3) I still don't know if there's a good reason NOT to run both Drownyard and AEtherling main. You need land in the deck anyway... If there is and I'm being stupid, explain for me why. Please.
    4) Are people still running Jace, Memory Adept as a sideboard win-con? How are other people doing with it? It's been outstanding for me, but I want a few more data points.

    1) I board out 2 Aetherlings game 2 if i've won game 1, allowing me maneuverability, I board out 1 Aetherling game 2 if i've lost as a next level decision, and my needle is never a dead card. it still hits tech lands and planeswalkers. i'm still deciding on replacing needle with sphere for my meta because there's just that many activated abilities in every deck.

    2) Thank you, esper just needs to be tuned to the meta and it's always a deck to be feared when tuned right. although most decks shouldn't play 4 snapcasters, that's just gettin greedy.

3)for me, I'm looking at post-rotation, and because of reanimator and america, I'd rather not be giving them more gas than I answer. It's just a meta specific choice that I'm quite happy with.

4)I played with it and well.... Aetherling and G-dad are just faster wincons and again, I'm avoiding milling as a tactic since I already have a favourable matchup against the decks in name and want to keep it that way.

how has Tribute to Hunger been for anyone in the hexproof matchup? I've been hesitant to play it because away, but it could replace another removal spell.

also, considering seeing how drogskol reaver does in a green-based meta.
